The black guard is a well used (& abused :P ) Prc on these boards, especially in conjunction with hexblades. However, it has the much overlooked ability of being a fallen paladin.

A fallen paladin1/blackguard10 seems in my opinion to be a very powerful character for an 11th level character.
It has full BaB, 4th level spells & 3D6 SA, which i think is undo-able by any other character of 11th level, even with all source books at your disposal!!You are capable of insane saves & can smite good for an extra 10 damage. Your feat requirements even sets you up for combat brute & puts you most of the way to tribal protector, my personal favourite Prc!

So my question is this, is this one of the best possible starts for an evil PC out there??

I like to mix blackguards with hexblades for lethal results. A simple hexblade17/blackguard3 is quite a foe.

It's a great start. Then you move into Disciple of ______ or Thrall of ______ for added fun.

thats what im going to do:
fallen paladin/blackguard10/disciple of dispater8/EWM1
I can't decide: elven courtblade (for loads of crits) or warpick (for massive criticals).

On a side note, theres an excellent weapon, blackguards blade in BoVD which adds +10 to smite good damage  Especially good if you use it as an enhancement, instead of being lumbered with a long sword

While I like the RP prospect of a holier-than-thou paladin falling to the deepest evil, I also like the prospect of getting cha to saves three times by level 8, with evasion in armor and mettle by lv11. If you get SR via armor, race, or class, you're nearly immune to spells.

With human + able learner - Hex3/Pal-Tyranny3/Blackguard3/Divine Oracle2

If only there was a way to get righteous might and persistent divine metamagic with contemplative7...maybe

Human Hex2/Pal-Tyr2/Fighter2/Blackguard2/Ur-Priest2/Contemplative8/Divine Oracle2.

01 Able Learner, Power Attack
03 Cleave
05 Iron Willl
06 Improved Sunder, Spell Focus (Evil)
09 Extend Spell
12 Persistent Spell
15 Divine Metamagic
18 Skill Focus: Knowledge (Religion)

Haha, I think it works, as long as you can legally give up divine casting from blackguard to get Ur-Priest. If not, there's a method without blackguard. Full casting with Ur-Priest, slippery mind, evasion in armor, cha to saves 3 times, SR 23, and persistant righteous might/divine favor. No mettle, but you won't need it anyway. Booyah!

I've been podering the exact same build lately (except for Pal-Slaughter instead). It's very defensive, but do you have any ideas how to get a decent damage output? I've been considering Disciple of Dispater as soon as possible.

Sadly I don't know the details on the Disciple of Dispater, Tribal Guardian, or Thrall of Orcus (or whoever, forgot). You could just finish the build off with blackguard and fighter levels, getting combat brute, improved bull rush, shock trooper, divine might, and divine shield. Use a twohander with an animated shield, charge/powerattack like crazy, and sneak attack when able. Maybe get a weapon enhancement that has a saving throw, since your aura gives a -4 saves penalty (if using Paladin of Tyranny).

True, but with the search function down, I am betting there are still many people who are not aware of such a build. If your dm allows, get extra slot and take spellsword after a lv or 2 or demonbinder.

I think when they finally get the search fixed, I'll stick links to a bunch of my favorite builds and useful threads into my Yahoo! notebook. That way, when it breaks again (which seems inevitable around here  ) I will have them handy, even if I'm not at home with all the stuff I have saved on my PC.

Yeah, I've been doing the same, including your awesome "Uber-Duper Assassinator" build.

Catharz, there is no good reason to get rid of all those level of Shadowbane Inquisitor.

Personally, I would do (if I could plan for the Alignment shift from Lawful Good to Lawful Evil) Rogue 2/Paladin 4/Shadowbane Inquisitor 10 -> Rogue 2/Blackguard 5/Shadowbane Inquisitor 10. You still get all the features of having 10 Paladin levels.

Features from having 10 levels of Paladin (not traded in): +3 Smite Good per day, Lay on Hands, Sneak Attack +1d6, Fiendish Summoning 1/day, Undead Companion.

So Yeah, I think keeping the Inquisitor levels is a good idea.

Rogue 2/Blackguard 5/Shadowbane Inquisitor 10 has +5d6 Sneak Attack, Smite [whoever I deem bad] 3/day, Smite Good 5/day, a Fiendish Servant, an Undead Servant... And Aura of Despair is pretty hardcore (all enemies within 10 feet take a -2 to all saving throws).

------------------------------------------

Hexblades are awesome, they are like anti-Bards or anti-Barbarians. Instead of making themselves better, they make their enemies weaker. And that pairs up pretty nicely with the Aura of Despair, since the Hexblade's Curse is a save effect (kind of like a +2 to your save DC).

The problem with Hexblades (as well as Bards and Barbarians) is that multiclassing delays and therefore weakens the primary class feature to the point that returning to improve it is fruitless.

Once you abandon the base class you don't really return. That said.

Hexblade 3/Fighter 2/Blackguard X is an evil warrior that never tasted the light of goodness. With the Battle Caster feat, this Hexblade can use Medium Armor (Mithral Full-Plate).

--------------------------------
The following is probably a Character Developement thing, but since it is Blackguard relate, it is sort of on topic.

For Blackguards: Magic Weapon spell is pretty cool. Sure it isn't that powerful, but since it is a transmutation spell, a side effect of using it is describing a shape change of the weapon you transmuted:Mave Nightheart slammed his clenched fists into one of his jailor's neck and snatched the longsword from his grasp.

"Hextor, bless this blade!" Mave shouted.

Black liquid poured from his hands over the hilt and up the sword's length. Where the dark oil covered, obsidian black metal was left in the wave's wake. The sword in Nightheart's hands was a sinister shadow of what it was before the spell. Infernal ingravings on the blade seemed to bleed; it was obvious that this weapon had a dark design in store for the guards.

Catharz, there is no good reason to get rid of all those level of Shadowbane Inquisitor.

Actually there is very good reason to get rid of all those levels of Shadowbane inquisitor: They don't add to Blackguard spellcasting, they don't add to Nar demonbinder spellcasting, and they don't add any meaningful abilities which aren't already gained by other classes in the mix. A 3-level SI dip is awesome for a blackguard, but that is about it.

Certainly more levels of SI could be useful for some builds, but if you want to be a good Blackguard/Strifeleader there isn't room for them.

2 words: Burning Light. Just like a Whirlwind Attack that reachs out a 70 feet and strikes for 4d6 DIVINE damage.

Fallen Paladin Blackguards are fun. And a good start. But I'm a fan of the good ole' solid

Rogue 4/Fighter 6/Blackguard 10.

Base Attack 19, 4th level spells, 11 feats (12 if human!), 5d6 Sneak Attack, Evasion, and Charisma to saves (Not to mention all of the other goodies, like trap sense, Uncanny Dodge, Smite Good, etc, etc.)

I consider it to be one of the most solid Blackguard builds, especially with a Charisma based BG - it's simple, clean, and efficient. And all housed within the PHB and DMG.

Err, Hex3 doesn't get spells, and blackguards cast divine, so just strap on some plate and go to town, no feats required =p
