| JohnGalt07-14-05, 10:03 PM | I want to make a sorcerer whose only purpose is to deal damage. As much as possible, as fast as possible. I have no idea how I should go about doing this. I can use pretty much everything. I was thinking about doing something with elemental savant, but the two levels of spells kind of turned me away from it. Can anyone help me make the ultimate "point and it dies" sorcerer? |
| Mist of Shadows07-14-05, 10:24 PM | Go with this build. Max int at 18 or 20 if you can use something like those elfys that get a +2 to int. Cleric 1/Wizard1/warmage 1/ bard 1/ sorceror 1 geomancer 5 (in wizard.) /sublime cord 10 (in wizard) take practiced spell caster 1 time in wizard. You have a caster level of 20 in all of your arcane classes by Raw cause of the glitch in the wording of the class. You can apply your warmage edge to all of your spells thanks to the geomancer power. So you have a caster level of 20 in your arcane classes (via sublime cord and loop holes that way.) You are doing Int 18 or 20 so 4 or 5 extra damage base to each spell up like the level of the power in the geomancer thing. So all of your spells that you get from warmage, wizard, bard and sorceror should get your war mage edge. Take more cleric and mystic thuerge levels if needed for prequirements for the geomancer. Only really need like two levels of geomancer I think. Cause that's when you get the level 1 spells can use any casting thingy that lets you add your warmage. At level twenty you are using int for all of your spells via the geomancer and you should have 28 to 30 (from level and inherient and then add 6 for an enhancement item.) so 34 to 36 which is a +12 or 13 on damage to every spell. So all of those first level spells are cast at level 20 at level 20 :) Toss in anything else to give you loads of power. You gain a lot of power by finding strange classes that give new arcane spells. For example for every one level of something else you take like wu jen or things like that you gain like 3 to 5 spells per day that you can cast. Take another practiced spell caster when you need too to keep your caster level high and your good to go. |
| JohnGalt07-14-05, 11:15 PM | Hmm, i wasn't really clear before. I don't want something like the above, I want something that has only a few classes, not a potpouri of everything. Something that is like 5/5/10, as opposed to 1/3/5/4/3/2/2. Also, this doesn't have to be super powerful. I simply want something more powerful than the base sorcerer. |
| Gehenna07-14-05, 11:30 PM | If all you really want to do is damage, Warmage 20. |
| X-Codes07-14-05, 11:30 PM | I was about to say that Mist left out something important: Sublime Chord has it's own spell progression, it doesn't add caster levels to other classes. Anyway, heres my idea: Sorcerer 9/Rogue 1/Daggerspell Mage 10. With appropriate equipment, this build gets off 5 spells per round. It also has 9th level spells (albeit only 1 spell known) and, with practiced spellcaster, 20th level casting. Ideal race for this would be Wild Elf (Like normal elf only +2 Dex, -2 Int, FC: Sorcerer). |
| Nate Jones07-15-05, 02:04 AM | You could try going with some incantatrix in there to metamagic your damage. |
| IceFractal07-15-05, 02:58 AM | Warmage 6/Incantrix 10/Archmage 4 is a pretty good setup. Qualify for Archmage by getting Arcane Disciple (Spell Domain), which gives you Greater Anyspell, thus letting you cast 5th level spells from any school (an Archmage requirement not easily met by a Warmage); this also gets you some much-needed versatility if you're willing to keep a good spellbook. Consider Energy Substitution as your feat to qualify for Incantrix, as it's great for spontaneous casters focused on damage-dealing. Extraordinary Spell Aim (CAdv) is your friend - you can drop those fireballs right on your party and not hurt them. Incantrix gives a number of useful metamagic benefit (the newer one is actually better for this), and Archmage gives you a number of options for improving your spells. They cost slots, but you're going to have plenty of those. Also, you don't lose any caster levels in any of these, so you'll be a good caster throughout your progress. |
| X-Codes07-15-05, 03:37 AM | Instead of Incantatrix, go Recaster. Recaster has a number of useful abilities in addition to having lots of sudden metamagic, you won't miss that level for long. Also, I don't really think Warmage is a very practical class. It simply lacks any depth whatsoever. Why learn to deep-fry a goblin in 20 different ways? |
| Todd07-15-05, 08:23 AM | If all you really want to do is damage, Warmage 20. I have to agree. If *all* you want is damaging spells then Warmage is the way to go. Sorcerer works better with utility spells ... of which the Warmage gets pretty much none. |
| ninjarabbit07-15-05, 08:26 AM | I'm going to recommend a halfling sorcerer6/luckstealer5/fatespinner4/archmage5 Luckstealer is in Races of the Wild and it's Lucky Spell ability is very much worth it for a blaster, letting you reroll some dmage. |
| Father Dale07-15-05, 10:08 AM | If you have access to Dragonlance Material, there are some very nice classes in Age of Mortals that would be right up your alley. Sorcerer 10/Auxiliary Mage 5/Warmage (DL version) 5. You could have disinitgrates do 40d6+120 on a failed save. |
| cowdragon07-15-05, 10:28 AM | Okay, alot of people won't like this, but get ready for a VERY powerful caster!!! Human:Battle Sorcerer 5/Prestige Bard 2/Dragon Disciple 3/Sublime Chord 3/Dragon Disciple 10 Now, here's the thing. You need to take Skill Knowledge(feat) at level one to get Perform as a class skill. The Battle Sorc will then qualify for the prestige bard earlier. You will get up to 6th level spells from both the Sor/wiz list AND the bard list. If you take the right feats (Draconic Legacy, Draconic Bloodline) you could get up to 3 sixth level spells known. Your main blasting spell is gonna be Mental Pinnacle from the psionics handbook. It turns you into a powerful psion for the duration of the spell, and you'll have around 8 castings/day of it. You will be fairly indestructible and have amazing stats. Great natural AC, Blindsense. Bardic music, breath attacks(especially if you take Draconic Breath). Immunity to an energy type, sleep, paralysis. Natural weapons. Great skills. I also suggest taking Practiced Spellcaster. OR, you could just take a warmage. ;) Good gaming. The Cowdragon :mage: |

| Perfecto07-15-05, 01:01 PM | I think he meant Battle Sorceror 5/Prestige Bard 2/Dragon Disciple 3/Sublime Chord 3/Dragon Disciple 4-10 20 levels |
| Calatash07-15-05, 06:51 PM | Damage dealing with nothing but magic missiles! (I'm going off memory here, I might get the progression a little wrong) Warmage6/Force Missile Mage 5/Warmage7-8/Argent Savant5/PrC2 Take Twin, Empower, Energy Sub (Acid), and Energy Admix (Acid), since Force Missile Mage will let you add any elemental damage to your MMs. Start tossing on any and all Metamagic feats you can to deal huge amounts of damage. Plus you can add on your Force Specialization damage, and Warmage edge damage. You can cast all your spells in Medium Armor to boot. (Force Missile Mage is from Dragon 313 I think?) |
| Snow Savant07-15-05, 07:07 PM | Geez. If you have to play a spellslinger who specializes in "D.D.D." (dumb damage dealing), get creative with your spell selection and application. A sorceror can be way more effective at unloading piles of damage via more creative use of spells like Shrink Item, Telekinesis, and Major Creation. Yeah, Major Creation. With help from a 1 level dip in Archmage for the Spell-Like Ability class ability. |
| X-Codes07-15-05, 07:20 PM | Major Creation 10 cubic feet of lead over that guy's head. *splat* |
| Snow Savant07-15-05, 07:25 PM | No ... personalized prisons made of complexly layered singular objects. Of very, *VERY* hazardous material. And lots of it. Go look in the back of the DMG for suggestions. This spell, when used in combat mode as a (Sp), is case-in-point for why Wizards should always have an appropriate Craft skill customized for their particular Major Creation schtick. |

I got a new DM and would like to explain it as clearly and simply as possible. |

I got a new DM and would like to explain it as clearly and simply as possible.Dropping big, honk-ass "unshrunk" boulders on your foes while flying above them via Alter Self spell. You need to be math-proficient to get the size-to-damage ratios all in order for presentation to your DM. Another good example of how 2 low-level spells synergize nicely to give you cheap ways of causing boatloads of damage. Assuming you hit of course. :) I have not read the Heroes of Battle book yet ... but I hear there are new "dropping stuff rules" in them. Worth a look. |
| 20goingon123207-15-05, 09:18 PM | I am playing an Aasimar cle3/sorc4 in the campaign starting Monday and I have for the Sorc spells: Level 1: Mage Armour, Shield, Magic Missile Level 2: Alter Self I was planning on abusing the living daylights out of Alter Self, since I can do it so many times a day (22 Wis, 22 Cha after items) and Monk's Belt (AC of 20 pre-spells in my underwear due to 16 Dex as well, I rolled very well in terms of stats). My Cleric Domains are Sun and Plant, being a Cleric of Ehlonna. Should I be aware of any special low-level synergetic spells/good steady damage dealers that I can drop one of the Sorc spells for? Shrink Item is 3rd level and I think Haste and Fireball (for the area effect) will have priority in that hack and slash campaign. I have a longbow as backup. |
| cowdragon07-15-05, 11:27 PM | yeah, exhaustion was the culprit!!! I meant the last 7 levels to be DD for the 20 level build. Thanks for catching it though. Another thing I am liking right now is the Sorcerer 20. I know it sounds funny, but I really like the Draconic feats, Searing Spell, Aquatic Casting(makes fire work under water), so I run out of enough feats to get into Archemage. The thing about a blasting sorcerer is this though... you still only need a couple blasting spells and the rest can be utility or buffing, because you can always choose to cast a blasting type spell. Just my thoughts on this. The Cowdragon :mage: |
| Mist of Shadows07-15-05, 11:46 PM | Was tired, the stuff after the sublime stuff can increase that. And yes I know it has it's own progression but the wording is strange on sublime cord and so you really can make powerful things with it. In other words go take a look at the thread for the sublime cord. |
| PonTelon07-16-05, 01:23 AM | Damage Dealing is, meh. But the best I have known(that isn't a level dip here and there) and is concise enough for most DMs is Warmage10/War Mage10(from Dragonlance: Age of Mortals). Admixture that Orb of Fire(both feat and spell from Complete Arcane) for 30d6+90+Int Mod damage. Level 8 slot. =) Fireball can do the same for a level 7 slot, but it's an Area attack(so you can hit your allies) and is hurt by Saves and SR(while Orb of Fire has neither, just an attack roll and a save VS a semi-wimpy effect). I am playing this build(actually level 21) in an epic game and he has forced the DM to put us against stuff that is CR 26. Two of them at the same time. =P Luckily I'm with the Gleamers so I got a Staff of Magius(my DM loves me XD) for my utility stuff. Anyway, back on topic, Yes, Warmage+War Mage is the best combo I have seen(that I would allow as a DM, myself). |
| imneuromancer07-16-05, 08:36 AM | Something I have been tossing around as an idea for a blaster sorcerer is if you are a good alignment sorcerer and have all good-aligned characters, then Purify Spell would be very tactically handy. Purify Spell is a metamagic feat in the Book of Exalted Deeds (p. 45) that allows you to do extra damage to evil outsiders, normal damage to evil creatures, 1/2 damage to neutral characters, and *no* damage to good creatures. What does this mean, tactically? It means that you can start lobbing Purified fireballs and other nasty area of effect spells INTO COMBAT and not hurt your party, but hurt the enemy. Usually, fireball is good but not great because after the first couple of rounds your friends are in melee and you have to be careful what area spells you throw in their direction. With this spell, you can lob fireballs at baddies all day and not worry about hurting your party. Its like having mastery of shaping at a low level!! Like I said, it requires a GOOD aligned party, though, so YMMV. |
