| Tweedledope09-02-06, 01:05 PM | Okay, I really want to make good use of the Bloodstorm Blade and the Master Thrower PrC. I have gone through the build annex only to find that everyone, apparently, wants to throw boomerangs. Well, I was hoping I could get some advice without throwing the boomerangs, perhaps, daggers, or dwarven waraxes. Something else. I'm working on a tentative build: Warblade 5 - this is far superior to Warblade 3/Fighter 2 as has been proposed earlier...d12 HD, better skills, more manuevers/stances, and 1 bonus feat rather than the two that Fighter levels give you. Bloodstorm Blade 10 - This is an awesome class...all 10 levels are required. Also, my DM has created a clade of Githyanki BBs that must train you. At 10th level, you're a Grandmaster. Master Thrower 5 - I'm not sure if I should take all 5 levels. I'm currently away from my complete warrior but, this might be easily subsitituted out for a few levels of some other class. So, how can I put all of this together? What feats should I take? All books are available, very high stats (18x3, 16x2, 14) and mags are available. So, help me put all of this together please! |
| jedrious09-02-06, 02:04 PM | well with Deadeye Shot, Trip Shot and Two with One Blow(Note I chose the thrown weapon tricks that apply to all thrown attacks and are not specific actions), you should have a decent battlefield controller, and it would just look nasty doing all of this with the scythe |

I have gone through the build annex only to find that everyone, apparently, wants to throw boomerangs. Well, I was hoping I could get some advice without throwing the boomerangs, perhaps, daggers, or dwarven waraxes. Something else. There is a newer one that's throwing handaxes instead. Got posted at like 1am or something last night. I'm working on a tentative build: Warblade 5 - this is far superior to Warblade 3/Fighter 2 as has been proposed earlier...d12 HD, better skills, more manuevers/stances, and 1 bonus feat rather than the two that Fighter levels give you. Very true. Bloodstorm Blade 10 - This is an awesome class...all 10 levels are required. Also, my DM has created a clade of Githyanki BBs that must train you. At 10th level, you're a Grandmaster. Sounds good--I don't think any of the builds in the compendium have actually taken all ten levels of the class... Master Thrower 5 - I'm not sure if I should take all 5 levels. I'm currently away from my complete warrior but, this might be easily subsitituted out for a few levels of some other class. I would personally try to find a different PrC (of course I have no ideas right now :embarrass ), as it's a rare thing to be able to stack the Bloodstorm Blade abilities and the thrown weapon tricks. However, Blood Rain with Trip Shot and Deadeye Shot is pretty nice and painful. In addition to that, there is nothing that says you can't combine the Blade Storm with tricks (the exact text states "a ranged attack at your highest attack bonus," which does nothing to override the use of a weapon trick--good thing it isn't mechanically classified as a strike, but it merely uses one). This means that you gain a number of options when doing a Blade Storm that no other Bloodstorm Blade has. As to feats, you don't have much of a choice about getting the prereqs for the classes (Point Blank and Precise Shots and WF with any thrown weapon), but past that you can either take advantage of Thunderous Throw and take melee-based damage feats, or take advantage of the ranged feats you already have and start down one or two of those trees. Here's the build stub I'd suggest: Warblade 5/Bloodstorm Blade 1/ Master Thrower 5/Bloodstorm Blade +9. You'll have a BAB of +20, Fort +12, Ref +6 (and evasion), Will +5. The reason for taking the Master Thrower levels in the middle of the Bloodstorm Blade progression is to get the most out of the tricks, and get the Improved Critical as soon as you can without actually wasting a feat on it. You can actually mix up BB and MT however you want once you meet the prereqs. |
| Tweedledope09-02-06, 03:32 PM | I've been searching for other thrown weapon based PrC and the only one I can find is the Whisperknife from Races of Wild. It's Halfling exclusive though. Perhaps, I could go that route with the Strongheart Halfing. However, I really despise small races for battlefield control/tanking...not good. Also, I feel that I should take the 2nd level of Bloodstorm Blade ASAP. This allows me to treat my ranged attacks as melee attacks...IE, no more AoO by foes with reach weapons. Yay! -=TD=- |
| Some Like It Hot09-02-06, 04:02 PM | Master Thrower offers some great synergy. I like something along the lines of Warblade 5/BB 4/MT 5/BB +6 if you want to go all the way to 10 with Bloodstorm Blade. Take up to 4 levels of warblade before jumping into Master Thrower. The thrown weapon tricks are nice, but only having to worry about a few weapons (thanks to the immediate returning ability of the bloodstorm blade) is even better. I don't like BB all the way to 10. I like it to 4-6 with a few extra warblade levels tagged onto the end of the build. But that's preference, so we'll go with what you like. Feats Iron Heart Aura and Stormguard Warrior are a must. The extra damage from Combat Rhythm is very nice. After that, it depends on the sort of character you're looking at playing. I like the lots of small weapons route...make kukris your weapons of choice. Pick up the TWF tree and rapid shot and have a ball with all the attacks you have. Pick up palm throw to double those again, netting 16 attacks. If you want something a little heavier, make rapiers your weapons of choice. Pick up Oversize TWF and Power Attack and you're good to go. Less attacks, but you can use power attack and, after level 14, all those attacks are touch attacks. Even better. For thrown weapon tricks: palm throw, deadeye shot and weak spot (for light weapons) or deadeye shot, two with one blow and weak spot (for larger weapons). You won't get your str bonus to damage with either, but that lets you ignore that particular stat, by and large. Alternatively, go the THF route and use something like the scythe (because that earns you insane cool points). Pick up weak spot, deadeye shot and trip shot as your thrown weapon tricks. This nets you double power attack so better damage, but three fewer attacks (because of no TWF). Still no str bonus, but that's made up for in the extra power attack. Abilities that add damage are very nice for this sort of build. Look for abilities that add additional ability modifiers to damage and figure out a way to use them. Shadowblade gives you dex to damage, but only with Shadow Hand weapons. Warblade 9 (I think) gives you intelligence to damage against flatfooted or flanked enemies. Swashbuckler 3 also adds another intelligence to damage, but only with finessible weapons. With a spiked chain, you could theoretically get intelligencex2 and dex to every attack. -SLIH |
| DavidWL09-02-06, 09:30 PM | Bump. Also, I'll post more later when I get to my books. However, it is a cool idea I've also been thinking about a while. Feat choice will be ... interesting/fun. David |
| Tweedledope09-03-06, 01:34 PM | I'm actually thinking about going with the Minotaur Greathammer (MMIV) for cool points...it's vicious in melee and it will be effective with my immediate return and the critical boosts from the Master Thrower. Sound good? |
| prototype0009-03-06, 03:57 PM | Did my stormwhisper build get lost? Its a warblade, swordsage, master thrower, bloodstorm blade, whisperknife with some rogue and swashbuckler thrown in for good measure. Nope, heres the link: http://boards.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=9936046 Comments would be nice. prototype00 |

Nope, heres the link: http://boards.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=9936046 Comments would be nice. prototype00 It seems like a very solid build...despite the hijack. ;) However, I'm wanting to steer clear of the small sized races so I can optimzie my damage output. Besides, it's more fun to watch someone throw a 30 pound hammer Thor style. ;) -=TD=- |
| prototype0009-03-06, 04:22 PM | Despite the hijack? Did I forget to credit someone with? Or is my build based on someone elses' build? prototype00 Hmm, well large weapons are good and all, but I think the best damage output when using stormguard warrior comes from being able to make more attacks. In my character's case via the palm throw ability. At potentially +90 damage/hit and with all attacks being ranged touch attacks, I should say that its damage output is comparable to that done with a greatsword. or a minotaur hammer. |
| Tweedledope09-03-06, 04:40 PM | I was just givin' you hell for posting a link to your post for criticisms...thus, a hijack. I don't really understand how Stormguard Warrior is so spectacular...you give up a full round of attacks (potentially) to gain a +5 on damage for the next round of attacks. Doesn't this seem kind of trivial since you just gave up ALL of your attacks for a full round? Perhaps someone can show me, mathematically, how this is superior. |
| prototype0009-03-06, 04:52 PM | thus, a hijack Oh, that kind of hijack, apologies then. you give up a full round of attacks (potentially) to gain a +5 on damage for the next round of attacks Its not just +5 for the full round of attacks, its +5 for each hit you make on that full round of touch attacks. My character, conservatively, can have 14 attacks/ round Since these are touch attacks, lets just assume conservatively that 3/4 of them hit, thats about 11 hits. Stormguard warrior then lets you do +55 damage with each successful hit the next round (multipliable via crit, which is *3 in this character's case) Lets say once again that conservatively about 11 attacks hit. 11*55 = 605 extra points of damage. Since my character is using bloodstorm blade, he can do this from range, so even if the enemy tries to escape a full attack (quite possible actually, if they know what stormguard warrior does), it won't matter and they'll take the damage anyway. Compared to if I had just taken reguar attacks for two rounds: 22 * (12 (dex) + 5 (int)) + 22 d 3 as opposed to 11 * (12 + 5) + 605 (with stormguard warrior) + 11 d 3 Which is on average 407 vs 808.5 an almost 2 to one ratio. prototype00 I like the lots of small weapons route...make kukris your weapons of choice. Pick up the TWF tree and rapid shot and have a ball with all the attacks you have. Pick up palm throw to double those again, netting 16 attacks. P.s. You can palm throw Kukris? I'm not sure thats 100% kosher. |

Doesn't this seem kind of trivial since you just gave up ALL of your attacks for a full round? Perhaps someone can show me, mathematically, how this is superior. Example: If you use the various ways you can double attacks with master thrower, use skip rocks, etc., you should be able to get tons of attacks (40?). If you focus all your attacks on the same opponent, then you gain +5 to each of your attacks against that opponent for each attach that hit ... => 40 attacks each at +200 damage => +8000 damage. (Using very approxmiate math) Now, as you divide your attacks amoungst many opponents, the bonus decreases dramatically, but it is still very worthwhile. Also, for the build, I think I would prefix it with: Warblade 1/Fighter 2/Psychic Warrior 2/ You lose 1 BAB, a manuever readied, a stance known, but gain 2 feats. (And the truth is, at the lower levels, you can cherry pick the manuevers and stances you actually think you'll use). Also, at the end, you might want to replace 4 levels of Bloodstorm Blade by doing something like: Swordsage 1/Fighter 2/Psychic Warrior 2/Bloodstorm Blade 6/MT 5/Crusader 1/Swordsage 1/Warblade 2 This would allow you to pick up some of the sweat high-level manuevers and stances and such like. (The purpose of the Swordsage at the beginning is to allow you to meet the prereqs of Bloodstorm Blade as well as allowing you to meet the prereqs for some of the higher level manuevers that you might want to pick up at later on). Those 5 levels of manuever classes give 16 known, 12 (9) readied, 4 stances. With Adaptive Style you can use them heavily. Best, David |
| klode_me09-04-06, 01:46 PM | I think a Desert throwing-knife is a little bit better than a dagger in this build. Cheers klode_me |

| ksbsnowowl09-04-06, 10:48 PM | My guess would be Sandstorm. Yep, Exotic ranged weapon, 1d6 19-20/x2, 15ft range. |
| Gerdreg09-05-06, 04:18 PM | I am in the early planning stages of a Goliath Warblade/ Bloodstorm Blade who throws Rocks (ala the Rock Throwing feats from RoS). They have good Damage (2d6) and Range (80') when you get the Improved feat. I think an enchanted rock (or two) would be cool, maybe carved with Goliath runes and such. The concept makes me think of the Lugian Raider for those who played AC2. [edit] Here's a quick build... Goliath 1/ Warblade 5/ Bloodstorm Blade 10/ Warblade 6-9 (32 pt. buy) STR 21 (+1 at levels 4 and 8) DEX 11(+1 at levels 12 and 16) CON 18 INT 10 WIS 10 CHA 8 1) Rock Hurling (2d6 Damage) 3) Point Blank Shot WB5) Weapon Focus 6) Precise Shot BB3) Improved Rock Hurling (80' Range) 9) Far Shot (120' Range) BB6) Power Attack (useable at range) 12) Cleave (useable at range) BB9) Great Cleave (useable at range) 15) Steady Mountaineer 18) Rapid Shot (5 Throws per round) WB9) Weapon Specialization |
| Tweedledope09-05-06, 08:58 PM | I was actually thinking of revising my build to use Orc Shotputs...nice damage output there. And, what's funnier than smackin' someone upside the head with a bowling ball? |
| Gerdreg09-06-06, 07:08 AM | I was actually thinking of revising my build to use Orc Shotputs...nice damage output there. And, what's funnier than smackin' someone upside the head with a bowling ball? Also a cool idea. You said your GM had a group of Githyanki doing the training, do they use a specific weapon? The thought of a group of Githyanki throwing their liquid Silver Swords is kinda cool. |
