what is the point?! im spending a fortune in feats just to use them effectively! and its all for character style to boot!

im trying to run a sniper crossbowmen. im a wisper gnome ( races of stone) and im debating betweeb scout and rouge. but on the plus side at lvl 1 i have a +12-14 to my hide :D

how would you go about making a sniping crossbowmen?

Taking the Crossbow Sniper feat for one, having your dex help damage is a huge bonus... but crossbows are weaker than bows in that they take alot of feats just to make equal to bows. thats why crossbows are simple, bows are martial.

I really wanted to play one as well and ended up binning the idea as too feat hungry and decided to play a soulbow skirmisher type instead. I'd still really like to play a paranoid gnome sniper who only believes things after he's seen them through his scope but I just don't think its viable at the moment :(

Taking the Crossbow Sniper feat for one

Can i ask where that feat is listed, it would seriously help me out but i must of missed it. Alternatively if someone could just throw up the wording on here that'd help too.

Cheers fellers :)

If you have a nice GM, ask if you can have Rapid Reload for free, since it is, as you pointed out, about style. Better yet, I propose that as a houserule, crossbows should have martial weapon proficiency benefits to automatically use rapid reload, much like the bastard sword has an exotic weapon proficiency to use it one-handed.

Crossbow Sniper is pretty much the only good crossbow feat unfortunately. Actually, it's the only crossbow-specific feat.

In addition there are some neat things you can do with a crossbow. There is a scope you can add to them (arms and equipment guide I think), and things like that. I think it works pretty well for a sniper.

In Eberon there is a crossbow that attaches to a warforged's arm that automatically reloads itself. It seems reasonable that if one can be made that attaches to an arm, one could be made that doesn't attach to an arm :). That removes the need for rapid reload, so now the build should be only as feat intensive as a normal bow build.

Course ya need the money for that crossbow.

AAEG is technically 3.0 I'm afraid. But if AAEG is allowed, the tumbling bolts in there work toward leveling the playing field.
