| TheVatican11-04-05, 06:16 PM | If we wanted to optimize the paladin with the mount, without going into a prc, what are the feats to take? Spirited charge, Mounted Combat and ride-by attack? Thanks for the help. Also, where are the rules for getting different mounts? Like a Dire Lion or a Dragon? Do we use Defenders of the faith, or are there updated rules? |
| Blade271811-04-05, 07:11 PM | There are rules for alternative mounts in the DMG, and rules for acquiring dragon special mounts in the Draconomicon. |
| tsuyoshikentsu11-04-05, 09:06 PM | You want to go into a PrC. Trust me. |
| ninjarabbit11-05-05, 07:33 AM | You're basic setup should be this 1) power attack, mounted combat 3) ride by attack 6) divine might 9) spirited charge Beyond that it's a manner of personal tastes but don't put all of your feats into mounted feats because you will be in situations where you aren't in combat on horseback. |
| MeleeMonster11-05-05, 12:56 PM | It's true about being overly specialized being a problem but if wor with your DM you shouldn't have that problem too often. Also if you go halfling paladin (then outriider if you doa PrC) then you get artound large creatures nto being abel to go through certain spaces but in generl my party has found the below hints to be very successful: Go with a flying mount - more versatility. Take cavalry charger - usually a crappy feat but combined with power attack, spirited charge and ride by attack you do this: Power attack for whatever you can afford because with a lance (you are effective getting a 1:6 power attack ratio with a lance) and make the dc 20 ride check for 4 extra damage which in turn with spirited charge gives you an additional 12 damage. Get a mount that has an attack and dont forget to allow him to attack with at you pass by. Have your mount take wing over feat to make 180 degree turn to turn aroung after your charge. Eventually take trample to add that extra attack as well - becomes very effective when fighting multiple opponents with cavalry charger. Rinse and repaet - you will soon be rinsing the blood, and a lot of it, off of your lance. |
| Da Dinictus11-05-05, 02:32 PM | You could also have a look at Sandstorm and the Eberron Campaign Setting books for classes and feats. As said, you want a PrC if you want to specialize. Consider Knight Training: Ashworm Dragoon (ECS) and jump into the Prc from Sandstorm as quickly as possible. Though you won't benefit from the worm's powerful poison as a paladin, you will get a rather mobile mount (quick enough and able to climb and burrow) and improvements on the various feats that go with riding a mount, including Trample, Mounted Combat and Spirited Charge. And don't forget, those paladin and dragoon levels stack for improving your worm's HD and abilities. Trust us, you want PrC's. |
| TheVatican11-06-05, 07:06 PM | Say that I take a DireLion as my mount. Will I be able to choose its feats and also Ill I be able to charge, use his pouce ability and then be able to attack as a PC? |
| TheVatican11-07-05, 12:13 AM | Bump Say that I take a DireLion as my mount. Will I be able to choose its feats? Also, will I be able to charge, use his pouce ability and then be able to attack as a PC? Meaning take the Dire Lions attacks rake and and stuff and then attack regularly as a PC at the end of a charge? |
| tsuyoshikentsu11-07-05, 12:27 AM | I believe not. There are PrCs that let you do this, however. (hint, hint.) |
| TheVatican11-07-05, 01:47 AM | Hmmm, so what use is a mount really? I mean it is not as good as having an animal companion, at least one can use the animal companion to attack while not riding it and then buff it up. A pally really can't do that since the pally mount is considered a magical beast, there are no spells a pally has that can buff the moount. Aside from having a free mount, and if we don't go into the PrC's there really is no point to getting a mount right? Most of the time we are in a dungeon. So if I have a direlion that has pouce, I cannot charge in and do his full around attack, and if I hit twice, then I can rake and then have my paladin attack right? What PrC's will allow me to do this? Well what if I just attack with the DireLion? CAn I ride the DireLion and then do a pouce and Rake while riding the lion? Is there a ride check? Thanks for the help. |
| tsuyoshikentsu11-07-05, 01:58 AM | If you're a Halfling, Halfling Outrider will. I think Wild Plains Outrider will too, but I'm not sure. The thing about PrCs is that they're focused. Paladin wants to be a divine spellcaster anti-undead healer cavalier soldier evil-detector. Most PrCs that are good for paladins focus on one, two or at most three of those things and run with them... and the less they focus on, the better the end character. (There are always exceptions, however.) |
| TheVatican11-07-05, 02:26 AM | What about the other stuff I mentioned? Thanks for the response, I appreciate your reply, I will look up those PrC's, though i want to go 20 in Pally, but I could change my mind, trying to see what i can and cannot do on a mount, and so far, the mount is weak if we don't do anything to specialize in it, which means all other abilities suffer. :) Thanks |
| Blade271811-07-05, 02:31 AM | If you were a Pal20 with a dire lion mount, it wouldn't be too weak. Make sure you have Improved Trample as a feat so both you and your mount get to attack as you mow someone down. |
| TheVatican11-07-05, 02:36 AM | So does that mean, that if my lion is charging he can use his pounce and rake ability and I can still attack while I am mounted? Is there a ride check? Thanks for hte reply. |
| X-Codes11-07-05, 03:07 AM | So does that mean, that if my lion is charging he can use his pounce and rake ability and I can still attack while I am mounted? Is there a ride check? Thanks for hte reply. Pouncing Dire Lion Mount: In order for your mount to attack with you, you would need to succeed a ride check (DC 10). From what I can tell your mount attacks normally if you succeed that check (i.e. you have 10 dex), so if your mount charges and has the pounce ability it can make a full attack including rakes. P.S. Don't bump threads until 24 hours have passed. |
| Blade271811-07-05, 03:40 AM | P.S. Don't bump threads until 24 hours have passed. He is, however, perfectly within his rights and forum etiquette to respond to a poster in his thread before 24 hours. |
| TheVatican11-07-05, 11:15 AM | Ahhh, sorry, It was mentioned that my post was better suited at a differrent forum, I was not aware of the 24 hour rule. Thanks for the reply. |
