I was leafing through my new copy of Dragonmarked when I saw the Mark of the Dauntless feat, which makes a dragonmarked character immune to daze and stun. The first thing that popped into my head was a house Lyrander storm based mage that takes levels in stormcaster and picks up the born of three thunders feat (thereby forcing 2 fort saves to avoid being stunned by electicity spells).

So that sets a couple things in stone. I have to be a half elf, and have to have at least one dragonmark feat. Born of three thunders is a must, so IIRC that means I need energy substitution as well. Stormcaster doesnt have any prereq feats, so other than that I'm wide open. Evoker's mark (also from dragonmarked) seems decent, as its basically a free empower (there are plenty of ways to get extra action points, so I'm not worried about that), though I might go with dragon prophesier/prophecy's shaper instead.

What I'm wondering is where to go from there. I really dislike the warmage, as they can do nothing but blast, and that doesnt really appeal to me in any way. I know the wizard is far more optimal than the sorcerer (and I'm quite adept with a wizard, mind you), but the sorcerer seems to fit the concept better. As such, I think I'm going to go with that, though if someone can present an attractive alternative I am always willing to listen.

Does anyone have any ideas to flesh this out? Is there a way to pick up the dragonblood subtype while remaining a half-elf? If so, the draconic aura feat from DM that boosts my DCs seems like a solid feat choice.

What about interesting electricity spells? Anything obscure out there that adds some secondary effects in addition to dealing damage?

I own just about every 3.5 book, with the exception of some of the more recent FR stuff. Its a safe assumption that flaws will be allowed.

Any help would be much appreciated. :)

Dragonborn from Races of the Dragon lets you be a dragonblood subtype while keeping you a half-elf for all race related purposes.
The spellscale fits better for a sorcerer, but I think they're their own race, not a rebirth thing like the dragonborn.

The thought surely crossed my mind, though. :plotting:

5 level of dragon devotee from races of the dragon will get you the draconic template while retaining your current type along with 2 sorcerer (specific) caster levels. +3 BAB and, nice fort save, stat increases (the cha will help you out) and 2 feats if you want.

You'll end up loosing 3 caster levels though.

Lightning Leap is a 5th-level Transmutation[Electricity] spell from the Complete Mage. It basically deals damage like a Lightning Bolt, but you are teleported to the end of the bolt.

Complete Mage also has the Storm Bolt reserve feat, which would not only fit flavor wise, but allow you to generate a 20' line of electricity dealing Xd6, no save, where X is the level of the highest-level [Electricity] spell you have remaining (for a sorcerer, you need to have a spell castable of a level in which you know an [electricity] spell). Plus, it gives you +1 CL with all [electricity] spells. It'll boost CL, and it'll stop you from wasting spell slots on mooks.

I'm running a wizard in a Red Hand of Doom game with Storm Bolt--I banned Evocation, so Storm Bolt is my source of damage plus it saves me spell slots--and I'm describing it as firing lightning from my eyes.

Lightning bolt eyes. Fully sweet.

Lightning bolt eyes. Fully sweet.

Those were pretty much my thoughts when I first saw stormrage back in 2e (I think there is a 3.5 version but I'm not sure). Fly around shooting lightning from your eyes. Is there anything more you could ever want?

Now you can shoot lightning from your eyes ALL DAY.

There's an aasimar and a tiefling in my party, and they're electricity-resistant, so I can just zap them with my (currently 1d6 vs. 5 resistance) lightning bolt eyes whenever they displease me. :D

The ever popular Orbs of X (Lightning, in this case) are always good for no SR, no save goodness. Arc of Lightning is a 5th level spell that can hit multiple targets with Xd6 damage and allows no SR. Glitterdust (again, no SR and no save vs. the revealing effect) makes sure that you can see who you're going to be blasting.

Conjuration spells are rather good. If you don't mind deviating from a pure lightning spells focus, being a specialist going into Master Specialist (from Complete Mage) is rather good in my book. A free feat, caster level boosts, some useful abilities, and the keystone is three quickened conjuration spells per day with no level adjustment.

Oh well, at least I can use it in a game that doesnt allow homebrew materials. :)

I'm not sure how that slipped my mind. :)

I was also concidering a cleric with a few choice domains and domain spontenaity. That would end up being far more powerful in the long run. But I always feel so cheap when I use the cleric...

But a cleric/elemental savant using air and born of the three thunders is so FUN!
Throw in the lightning reserve feat, and you've got a guy flying around at 90' perfect, in full plate, shooting lightning from his eyes (flyby attack here for extra fun, shoot your bolts in a flying pass) and when he busts out the real lightning spells, SONIC DAMAGE! yay~
This is pretty cheesy, eh?

For a sorc there's some additonal cheese: it's nice to note that nothing in the Elemental Savant class prevents you from using other elements through reserve feats.
If you're a sorc with fireball known, elemental savant levels, and firey burst reserve feat, you are still allowed to hurl fire with the feat!

Something like Cleric5/Elemental savant10/cleric+5
or throw in some Heir of Siberys levels if you want to get the big honkin' spell-likes. (and a couple powerfull dragonmarked feats)

If you can slide setting-specific material past your DM, I recommend the War Mage from the Dragonlance Campaign Setting. I think the book is Age of Mortals. It's a five level prestige class, and it's strongly based on dealing damage. In short, you get +3 bonus damage per DIE of damage you deal with spells. So, 10d6+30 lightning bolts.

Since such a caster will be highly focused in Evocation (Or maybe Conjuration in the form of the orbs.), a class like that would be almost unstoppable.

I wrote that spell long before UA was released. ;)

but whatever, thats neither here nor there, and plenty of people throughout history have had ideas similar to one another, so I'm not overly concerned. :)

Ah, fair enough, I was just going by the date on your post. And yeah, now that I look back it sounds accusatory. Wasn't meant to, so I apologize. (That and Arcana Unearthed. Not Unearthed Aracana. ^_~)

Well since you have to have Energy Sub (electricity) you can use spells with any energy descriptor right?

Blistering Radiance has an amazing area of effect, dazzle and stun everything in a 50' radius sphere.

Fire Shield or Radiant Shield or Cacophonic Shield -> Stunning Shield.

<somebody's> Cough, the cantrip that does 1 point of no-save sonic damage.

Wall of Fire, radiate stunning electric flames.

If you are gonna go Sorceror you will want Rapid Metamagic. Lets you apply metamagic feats without taking a full round action.

Can qualify at 9th level I believe.

Edit: It is from Complete Mage

Edit: It is from Complete MageActually... you might be better off NOT getting this now. I don't remember the name, but there is a spell in Complete Mage that speeds up the casting time of all your spells by one step. So that means all your standard action spells are quickened, and all your full-round spells become standard actions. Because of their full-round casting on spells with metamagic, a normal sorcerer gets more use out of that spell. It basically lets them cast a metamagiced version and normal version of any standard action spell every round, whereas the wizard would have to pick from spells that normally have a full round casting time.

Lightning Ring from the SC is a nice high level spell that protects you as well as letting you unleash two 5d6 lightning bolts a round as a free action.

Ya guess I wasn't paying attention laff. They are right. Spell surge is much better on a class that already needs lots of feats.

Especially since the PHB2 alternate sorcerer can already cast metamagiced spells at their normal casting time (albeit a limited number of times per day).

thanks for the ideas everyone. I think I have everything more or less flushed out.

happy gaming. :)

If you're going to be Dragonblooded, you can take Accelerate Metamagic:X and not worry about it.

Also, to get the [Dragonblood] type, you can take the feat Draconic Heritage (p-r Sorc1) to gain it.

Or, take the feat Quick Recovery from Lords of Madness, which lets you negate a Stunned or Dazed condition as a move action with a successful will-save.
