Hey, this is half an items question, half character optimization. I believe the bulk of my questoin falls under the latter. One of my PCs is looking for a way to shave off (preferably eliminate) the experience cost of creating magic items; particularly scrolls and wands. I know the book of vile darkness has the darkcraft experience system in it's sacrifice table, but that would require a knowledge (religion) check in the hundreds. Does anyone have any experience jacking this check to ridiculous levels for this purpose? Right off the bat we have skill focus and sacrificial mastery feats...

Are there any other good non-artificer builds that can create free xp points for item creation? This sounds like less of a char-op question, but I have a feeling the answer involves a build.

Jack up your religion check by any easy means possible, and then sacrifice some chump. Then do it again the next day, and the next. You don't need to make a DC check in the hundreds if you can waste 2 weeks and have a steady stream of victims, and can hit a DC50 consistently.

It's a skill check, so here are some standards.

+X competence bonus item (X max's out at 30)
+X enhancement bonus item
Have a Marshall buddy with Motivate Intelligence Aura
Aid Another

Aid Another...hmmm. Nanobots to the rescue (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=458721)!

Nanobots, if the DM allows, could get you a check in the thousands.

A +30 to skill item, again subject to DM approval, would help a lot. Guidance of the Avatar (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=dnd/sb/sb20010504a) is an alternative to that, if you or a party member is a cleric.

I would say Aid Another is your best bet, and it works well for flavor too.

Nothing says evil sacrifice like a cult. At +2 per cult member you can get a pretty damn high check if you can get enough people in the cult.

There is an old thread (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=149556) on this exact topic by ninja1. It should give you some ideas. I think you could get a modifier of +83 or so just by using the suggestions in that thread.

One of the best tips from that thread is to create cheap magic items, and then upgrade them. That way you can use a different sacrifice every time, instead of having to do one massive one to pay for it all at once.

Don't forget all the circumstantial bonuses given in sacrifices. Seriously, those dwarf Skill Focus (Knowledge (religion)) and Sacrificial Mastery. (Although now that you mention it, a Vile Loremaster is starting to seem really awesome right about now.)

First the easy ones:
Lasts an hour- +1
Altar- +2
Desecrated Area- +1
Public- +1
10 followers- +1
Tortured for a day- +1 (use the Liquid Pain spell to get another 3 xp)
Good-Aligned- +1
1 HD- +1
Genuinely Willing- +3 (Intimidate, anyone?)

+12 bonus on the check from situational modifiers.

So...

10 (take 10)
+9 (ECL 6, 9 ranks)
+4 (Int, assuming a Wizard)
+4 (Marshal Cohort)
+3 (Skill Focus)
+12 (Situational Modifiers)
-----
42 total.

Using the Liquid Pain spell and putting this all into Dark Craft makes for about 130 Dark Craft Experience. That lets you make over 3k gp worth of magic items per sacrifice without any XP expenditure. This is just for sacrificing a level 1 commoner, too! Your common village (population 500 adults, +25% nonadults which can also be considered "virginal or pure") can be sacrificed in this manner for about 80k of dark craft XP. You can even get some more out of the population if you repeatedly use the Liquid Pain spell on them, although that takes a number of moderate-to-high level casters.
