I'm looking at making an unusual 5th-level PC, and I have no idea where to start. The concept came from Bruce Willis in "Last Man Standing," and Mel Gibson in "Payback." The PC was originally in the city guard, but was kicked out because he killed a suspect. He's now a freelance detective in the same city, and isn't allowed to carry a weapon because of his past crime. I see him being very good at two things: boxing and getting information.

I'm thinking maybe a multiclass monk/rogue, to combine the barehand fighting with the socially-based class skills and skill points. I also like the concept of a knockout "sucker punch" with the sneak attack. He's CG, but I'm assuming a dramatic alignment shift at some point so that shouldn't be an issue. I want to max out his Intimidation, Gather Information and Bluff ranks, but I don't know what other skills to take.

We use all 3.5 WotC books that are not campaign specific. Here is what I need suggestions for:
- Class(es) and levels
- Possible feats
- Any other skills to take
- Ability score assignment priorities

Thanks in advance!

Shou Disciple. 5 level prestige class with a full BAB that gives the character the monk unarmed attack up to 2d6. It has no alignment restrictions, but requires the character to already have weapon focus (unarmed strike), dodge, and various skills like tumbles and maybe jump.

Combine that with any fighter/rogue style build and you've got your wish.

I agree Shou Disciple is a great class to go into later, but he's only 5th level. Monk/Barbarian is a great combo for an unarmed fighter or grappler. Rogue1/Monk2/Barb2 then head into Shou Disciple would be one way to go, since you said a dramatic alignment change isn't a problem.

If you don't mind being a Half-Orc, the Half-Orc Paragon class also gives you Rage and doesn't have a required alignment. There are some Half-Orc Paragon Monk builds in my sig that might work for you, with a little adjustment.

rogue19/monk1 with the ascetic rogue feat from Complete Adventurer, it'll give you full sneak attack progression and unarmed damage equal to a 20th level monk

Shou Disciple is in Unapproachable East, page 32

Your character sounds nothing like a monk. There was a fighter variant called the Pugilist in a Dragon. You can find it at crystalkeep.com I'm pretty sure.

You will also want to look at some of the variants in UA. Basically you need Gather Information and Intimidate as well as a good way of fighting barehanded.
