| Adolph_Kheebler12-26-06, 02:10 AM | Just out of curiosity, what does everyone think are the most broken items ever? To be fair we are not including artifacts. Only list items that are specifically printed in source books (no commisioned items or house rule cheeses). Any official WotC book of 3.5 edition is acceptable. A 3.0 source is acceptable if the material was never updated. This is also not including epic items. Please list the source of the item and reasons for selecting it. I would put my vote for the Thought Bottle from Complete Arcane. Storing xp? That effectively reduces any xp cost you would have to pay to 500 xp and can stretch over multiple tasks. AND IT'S ONLY 20,000GP!!! Forget 20,000gp. This item would be broken if introduced as an artifact. Every mage above 12th level would have one. Well, any competent mage. |
| VoxPVoxD12-26-06, 02:29 AM | Thought bottle cheese is great and all, but when it comes to the real heavyweights of broken-itemdom, you have to give it to Nightsticks (Libris Mortis, page 78) by a long shot. Nightsticks are the batteries that turn the ordinarily powerful cleric or to a lesser extent Paladin into certified Cheese Golems (who, with a little work become immune to everything except the PHB the DM's going to throw across the table at you). Nightsticks give you four free uses of Turn/Rebuke undead which Clerics and Paladins can then burn to power divine feats. Paladins get nifty bonuses like Divine Shield and Divine Might (which lets them add their undoubtedly impressive CHA to AC and Damage, respectively). Clerics, however, get Divine Metamagic. I won't go down the list of why this feat is so ridiculous, since I'm pretty sure there's more CO work centered on this feat alone than entire books' worth of material. Just a quick bit of math: 7500gp (cost of a nightstick) / 4 (number of extra turn attempts) = 1875 gp/attempt. For a Paladin that's less than 2000 gold per +CHA to AC or damage. For a cleric that's less than 2000 gold per free level of metamagic. Yeah. |
| Tempest Stormwind12-26-06, 02:34 AM | Thought Bottle. (Complete Arcane) -- Explicitly banned from many CO contests in the same way that Pun-Pun's banned. Nightstick. (Libris Mortis) -- I know what they're *supposed* to do, but in truth, I always envision them as black with a copper top, since that's really all they're ever used for. Candle of Invocation. (CORE!) -- You can afford this at about 6th level, perhaps earlier (I forget precisely when it drops below the DMG recommended single-item cost threshold for PC wealth), and it can cast GATE. No rolls, no checks, no questions -- a GATE. Karma prayer bead, purchased individually. (CORE!) -- Work out the price on that doozy and tell me if it isn't worth it, particularly for divine metamagic clerics with a bundle full of Divine Duracells Nightsticks. There are a few others, but those are the big ones. |
| Arem_K12-26-06, 02:41 AM | Dust of sneezing and choking: stuns for 5d4 rounds with no save. It only costs 2,400 gp and can be made by a seventh level caster with craft wonderous item and the poison spell. Core too. Not an item, but the prices listed for a warbeast animals are really screwed up. A warbeast T-rex costs 1,525 gp, so you can buy a cr 9 encounter for less than a magic sword. |
| Apocabramanic12-26-06, 02:42 AM | Phylactery of Change, from the Arms and Equipment Guide. 11200 and polymorph with indefinete duration, CL 7. Hi, I may look like a troll, have insane Constitution and Strength scores, as well as Natural Armor, but actually I am a pure wizard, throwing around with Fireballs. Yeah, this guy is is our party tank, but I have more AC and life than him and on top of that deal even more damage in melee. Unarmed. |
| EyeontheMountain12-26-06, 03:26 AM | Monk's Belt. Without the Wis-AC ruling it is nice, and a great item for many characters who don't indulge in armor. With the wis-AC ruling it is just plain broken. Especially for wildshaping druids. |
| Adolph_Kheebler12-26-06, 04:10 AM | Nightstick: JESUS CHRIST ON A CRUTCH! Candle of Invocation: And people still make scrolls of Gate...why? Dust of Sneezing and Choking: Always fun. Had a character who made great use of that once. Warbeasts: Oh yeah. We had to explicitly ban one of our party from getting a battletitan mount. Phylactery of Change: Oh the wonderful obscenity of it all. Monks Belt: Oh yeah. I forgot that little nasty one. |
| Rashomon12-26-06, 05:24 AM | Where are warbeasts from? |
| Etador12-26-06, 05:47 AM | Where can I find Dust of Sneezing and Choking? Tried to look it up in the DMG but couldn't find it, it should be under wonderous items, right? |
| Arem_K12-26-06, 05:48 AM | Warbeast is a template from the second monster manual. Dust of Sneezing and Choking is a cursed item. |
| CannibalSmith12-26-06, 09:59 AM | Where can I find Dust of Sneezing and Choking? Tried to look it up in the DMG but couldn't find it, it should be under wonderous items, right? It's under cursed items (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/cursedItems.htm#dustofSneezingandChoking ). |
| gellor12-26-06, 10:03 AM | Cloaker Flute - Savage Species. Unlimited uses per day Saves based on Perform skill Its a bard's dream come true. You just sit back and deal out unlimited hold persons and fear all day. On ya, if they hear it for 6 rounds, everyone in an 80' spread failing their will save can do nothing, even if attacked. $27,275 DEAL |
| ninja112-26-06, 10:15 AM | Rod of Wonder: costs 12,000 gp to buy; 6,000 gp & 480 xp to make. Activating the rod is a standard action and on a percentile roll of 88–90, 10–40 gems, value 1 gp each, shoot forth in a 30-ft.-long stream. Each gem deals 1 point of damage to any creature in its path: Roll 5d4 for the number of hits and divide them among the available targets. Activate the rod all day long into an empty lot, blight or diminish plants the grass that was created, sweep the mass of gems into a large container, and walk to the bank with a smile on your blue/green/purple face. I'm too lazy to figure on how quickly it pays itself off. Boccob's Blessed Book: A wizard can fill the 1,000 pages of a blessed book with spells without paying the 100 gp per page material cost. Moderate transmutation; CL 7th; Craft Wondrous Item, secret page; Price 12,500 gp;Weight 1 lb. (6,250 gp & 500 xp to make) It would take a wizard 100,000 gp worth of ink (etc..) to fill 1,000 spellbook pages normally. 100,000 minus 6,250 equals huge savings. I suppose it's not exactly broken... but saving 93,750 is nothing to sneeze at IMHO. |
| Telemon_Ajax12-26-06, 10:52 AM | Monk's Belt. Without the Wis-AC ruling it is nice, and a great item for many characters who don't indulge in armor. With the wis-AC ruling it is just plain broken. Especially for wildshaping druids. Wait, so your saying +1 armor and 1d8 for 13k gold is balanced? Its almost useless without the Wis-AC... |
| AZNsupermarket12-26-06, 11:22 AM | Wilding Clasps (Arms and Armorment or Master of the Wilds - forget which): DM: Mr. Druid, how are able to retain the benefits of wis to ac, while you're wildshaped? Druid: Well remember when you allowed me to get a custom made Monk's Vest, instead of a Monk's Belt? DM: Yes... Druid: Well I then bought these clasps, so that I could wear that spiffy vest in Legendary ape form! DM::headexplo |
| Apocabramanic12-26-06, 12:23 PM | Concerning Wilding Clasp, it's unclear on which items it works. The MotW states it works when attached to "an amulet, vest or similar item". Now, in which way has this item to be similar? Not clear at all. Anyway, Legendary Ape form should allow the Druid to simply take his belt off when Wildshaping and then put it back on. It is an Ape, after all, and medium size. Not a freaking huge T-Rex or something. By the way, the Legendary Ape has Strength 30 and is medium size. This strength does not at all result from magic. He has to have a biceps that even some huge creatures dream of. I mean, he has to be a being consisting wholly of muscles, right? Even his eyes and tongue must be pure muscles. And his hairs, too. Man, I bet he can knock you out with the blink of an eye. Got that joke? Hah! >< |
| AZNsupermarket12-26-06, 12:43 PM | Anyway, Legendary Ape form should allow the Druid to simply take his belt off when Wildshaping and then put it back on. It is an Ape, after all, and medium size. Not a freaking huge T-Rex or something. True, but worse than the T-Rex would be a giant constrictor snake. Improved Grab + Constrict = |
| Adolph_Kheebler12-26-06, 02:04 PM | Cloaker Flute: I don't see what's so broken about this. Remember that the saves are 10+RANKS in perform not bonus. That actually makes for some fairly average dc's for their level. And if someone makes one save they are immune for 24 hrs. Rod of Wonder: No. There are so many better infinite money combos that one is just not worth a spot on the list. My personal favourite was to wish for enough quarterstaves to equal 1gp. But any spell that has a material result can result in an infinite money combo. Someone tried selling the branches from a Deadfall spell. Boccob's Blessed Book: It's nice, but not that broken. Wilding Clasp: Unclear and unnecessary. It doesn't mention what a similar item is. |
| pflame500012-26-06, 03:01 PM | Monk's Belt. Without the Wis-AC ruling it is nice, and a great item for many characters who don't indulge in armor. With the wis-AC ruling it is just plain broken. Especially for wildshaping druids. When did the ruling come out that monk's belt adds wis to AC. It doesn't say that in the DMG. |
| Apocabramanic12-26-06, 03:04 PM | Someone tried selling the branches from a Deadfall spell. I imagine a lone commoner searching the remains of an epic battlefield of good and evil for Tulips from a Druid's Rain of Black Tulips to sell them in his town. "No, they are not exactly from my own garden." :D @pflame5000: It's merely a rule interpretation of someone. If I remember correctly, the Monk's Belt is described to "grant the AC bonus of a monk", not actually stating whether the wis-to-AC bonus is meant or the +X AC bonus. Or even both. |
| Surreal12-26-06, 03:15 PM | While not necessarily broken, there's a nice list of items in the Bunko's Bargain thread. |
| Neratos12-26-06, 03:19 PM | It is more than just an interpretation of the rules by someone, the sage says it in the FAQ. Which gives it much more weight than if someone on the boards was just saying it. FAQ is pretty darn close to errata. (especially since errata seems to never come lately, just FAQs) |
| Adolph_Kheebler12-26-06, 03:45 PM | Yeah. FAQ pretty much carries the same weight as errata these days since they stopped giving errata. |
| AZNsupermarket12-26-06, 04:04 PM | When did the ruling come out that monk's belt adds wis to AC. It doesn't say that in the DMG. WOTC cleared up the mystery and said that the monk's belt does grant wisdom bonus to AC as long as the wearer isn't wearing armor. |
| PhaedrusXY12-26-06, 05:25 PM | Neither of these are really broken, but they are incredibly good for their price: the Cube of Force (make my mage untouchable for several minutes per day? Hell yes...), and the (Grey) Bag of Tricks. I think the Mirror of Opposition is pretty broken, however. |
| The_Mad_Linguist12-26-06, 05:36 PM | Helm of opposite alignment *can* be broken... it certainly makes interrogating prisoners easier. |
| NoldorForce12-26-06, 05:44 PM | Neither of these are really broken, but they are incredibly good for their price: the Cube of Force (make my mage untouchable for several minutes per day? Hell yes...), and the (Grey) Bag of Tricks. The Grey Bag is a very cheap way to power Persistent (Greater) Consumptive Fields, considering that the critters don't die upon reaching 0 hit points (as happens with summons). |
| Animae_Draconum12-26-06, 05:48 PM | Amulet of Retribution Starmantle Cloak thats all i've got |
| Lysiander12-26-06, 06:46 PM | Spellblades from PGtF. 6.000 GP for an item that makes you immune to a single spell of any level. Even those that spell immunity won't help against. Also it is unclear wether or not it has to be used for it to work. First it says wearer, then wielder, so if rules as wearer, hello dagger collection of spell immunity for 6.000 GP plus a +1 weapon each. Nice bargain. |
| Adolph_Kheebler12-26-06, 07:49 PM | I have always ruled that the spellblades had to be wielded and couldn't be stacked. I let a two-weapon fighter use two since he was wielding both but otherwise it is just too obscene. |
| X-Codes12-26-06, 08:05 PM | Also it has to be targeted spells, not any old spell. A spellblade [Fireball] weapon is a waste of 6,000 gp. Best uses: Greater Dispel Magic, Finger of Death, Chain Dispel, Wail of the Banshee, Horrid Wilting. |
| BalthazarDArgent12-27-06, 02:19 PM | The debate rages on about this little beauty, but... Skin of the Ectoplasmic Armor (Complete Psionic): +8 armor bonus, no speed penalty, STD action to activate/deactivate (a -6 armor check applies) - all for 3000 gp and you don't have to be a psionic character to wear it. Plus it's a wonderous item so you don't have to be proficient AND you can wear simple leather armor underneath for a nice little +1 (+2 actual) armor ability active all the time (how about that death ward ability?). |
| Adolph_Kheebler12-27-06, 04:28 PM | Ectoplasmic skin is awesome because you don't have to be proficient. However if you wear other armour under it, the bonuses don't stack so it isn't really that broken. And it still has a low max dex and high spell failure chance. So psions are really the ones who get the most use out of it. Also think of the massive roleplaying penalties that ensue from wandering around with that up. Think about what you look like. |
| PhaedrusXY12-27-06, 04:58 PM | However if you wear other armour under it, the bonuses don't stack so it isn't really that broken. The armor bonuses won't stack. However, the armor special abilities will stack. You can do this cheese with Bracers of Armor, Chahar-Aina, and Dastana also. |
| monkey312-27-06, 05:15 PM | Ring of invisibility. |
| Adolph_Kheebler12-27-06, 05:29 PM | Why a ring of invisibility? It's cost is high enough that it falls out of the reach of the low levels when it is actually really useful. Granted it is a great item, but not really that broken. |
| BalthazarDArgent12-27-06, 10:19 PM | Ectoplasmic skin is awesome because you don't have to be proficient. However if you wear other armour under it, the bonuses don't stack so it isn't really that broken. And it still has a low max dex and high spell failure chance. Like someone said above, the armor bonuses don't stack, but the special ability bonuses do. Plus, Psions don't have spell failure. Also think of the massive roleplaying penalties that ensue from wandering around with that up. Think about what you look like. It activates as a standard action. You don't need it on in roleplaying situations. If combat arises during one of these times, I activate the armor as my first action. I'd love to see an artist rendering of it. Another broken item...don't have my books with me but the Scribing Pen from Complete Mage is wicked. For 1500 gp it will write scrolls overnight for you. |
| admiral_altinius12-27-06, 10:45 PM | What book is the Starmantle cloak in? |
| Arctigear12-28-06, 12:08 AM | Decanter of endless water... :D |
| CannibalSmith12-28-06, 02:11 AM | As what armor (light/medium/heavy) Ectoplasmatic Armor counts? |
| VoxPVoxD12-28-06, 02:57 AM | It doesn't. +8 AC, -6 Check penalty, +2 MAX DEX. These suggest heavy armor, as does the fact it's supposed to look like silvery ectoplasmic full plate. But it doesn't hinder speed. |
| CannibalSmith12-28-06, 03:14 AM | Has it no spell failure? Wizards rejoice? |
| Charasanya12-28-06, 03:27 AM | How about monks? If its a wondrous item, can't monks wear it and keep their special abilities? |
| Endarire12-28-06, 05:24 AM | Starmantle cloaks and retributive amulets are from Book of Exalted Deeds. -EE |
| BalthazarDArgent12-28-06, 11:43 AM | Has it no spell failure? Wizards rejoice? It does have a spell failure chance. As a Psion, it doesn't matter. How about monks? If its a wondrous item, can't monks wear it and keep their special abilities? Technically yes. It's a wonderous item, not armor. But an observant DM would likely disallow it's use as it violates the spirit of the monk class. I would venture to guess that he would make your WIS bonus to AC would go away, plus it's low DEX bonus is counterproductive to a monk. Not to mention it would be difficult at best for your character to find this item. They are extremely rare and the supporting materials for Psions are littered with disclaimers like "rare psionic items are usually not sold to non-psionic characters." |
| CannibalSmith12-28-06, 12:02 PM | It does have a spell failure chance. As a Psion, it doesn't matter. But for a bard, for example, it matters. Bard ignores spell failure from light armor. Ectoplasmatic armor is not an armor at all. Now what? |
| Wrathamon12-28-06, 01:15 PM | you get the spell failure, The bard ability doesnt matter because it isnt armor. |
| Apocabramanic12-29-06, 09:30 AM | :bump:-ing with a purpose. I thought this would be the most appropiate place to ask: How does the Crown of White Ravens from Tome of Battle work like? Let's take the Novice Crown. Cost is 3000 GP and it is said to "grant a maneuver" of up to 3rd level of the White Raven discipline if it worn for 24 hours. "Grant", okay, I see. No, actually, I don't! Does that mean one can use this maneuver without limits? Only once every 24 hours? With the usual refresh-mechanic of a martial adept, if such class is wearing it and once per encounter for non-martial adepts, as it is with maneuvers granted by feats? I am not experienced with the ToB, but I feel that turning any charge you make into a Battle Leader's Charge for just 3000 GP is beyond reasoning. Can anyone help out? |
| Lilt12-29-06, 10:02 AM | Helm of opposite alignment *can* be broken... it certainly makes interrogating prisoners easier.Nice, but 4kgp makes for one helluva expencive interrogation. You know it's one-shot, yes? Possibly useful for if you find some stupidly powerful opponent and manage to KO them. Put the helmet on them, take it off... Repeat about 150 times (should take 30 minutes) and there's a good chance (better than 99.9%) that they'll have shifted. |
| tsuyoshikentsu12-29-06, 12:34 PM | Remember, folks: telekinesis is your friend! Spellblades for EVERYONE! ;) Even without it, though, any given human can have: Main weapon Off-handed weapon Left gauntlet Right gauntlet Spikes of an animated shield Armor spikes And a Spiked (or Horned) Helmet from Races of Faerun ...enchanted. Of course, once you get into thri-keen or anthro squid/octopods, it really gets ridiculous. |
| The_Mad_Linguist12-29-06, 01:55 PM | Nice, but 4kgp makes for one helluva expencive interrogation. You know it's one-shot, yes? Repeat about 150 times (should take 30 minutes) and there's a good chance (better than 99.9%) that they'll have shifted. And you don't just have to KO them. Kill the BBEG, tie up the corpse, do whatever other preparations you need (readied spells, knockout poison, whatever), then resurrect them. Helmet on/helmet off until they detect as good. Interrogation is only one of the many uses, but it's more effective than speak with dead, and probably is the only way to find out where that lich hid his treasure. |
| Lilt12-29-06, 02:00 PM | And you don't just have to KO them. Interrogation is only one of the many uses, but it's more effective than speak with dead, and probably is the only way to find out where that lich hid his treasure. How are you going to resurrect a lich? And it doesn't take an ultra-clever DM to have the now good lich simply say 'no'. Your characters are good, does that mean you tell every passing adventure party where your valuables are? It's still his treasure. An even cleverer DM would have a good lich give all his stuff to charity in recompense. |
| VoxPVoxD12-29-06, 02:02 PM | Your characters are good, does that mean you tell every passing adventure party where your valuables are? It's still his treasure. case in point: Metallic dragons are greedy as sin |

Basically there's a defined list of what they can carry without losing VoP and 'Phat Loot' isn't on it The restrictions are on "owning" and "using". Forbidding a VoP character to hold loot conflicts mechanically with them still having to get a share of treasure and donate it. But this is a thread about broken items, not giving them up in a possibly-broken manner. :) |
| jalaziel12-29-06, 02:23 PM | Not so much broken, as odd... The Braid of DireShifting from RoE (p. 174). It costs 100gp and is a one-shot 1st level spell effect for a reduced duration, effecting a specific race with a specific ability. In my mind that makes it worth 25-30gp max... given that a Command activated version 1/day works out at 180gp it just seems a bit over-priced for so insignificant an effect... |
| amalcon12-29-06, 02:30 PM | Has nobody mentioned the Qaals Feather Token (Tree) yet? That thing's practically a broken-item staple. There are just so many times when it would be great to have a tree *there* -- from instant siege towers to instant barricades to impromptu early warning towers to medium-distance communication (raise the tree, climb it, and flash morse code). Of course there are also combat uses, like cover, and destructive uses, like planting it inside a building. There are just too many things to do with this for its 100gp price. |
| CannibalSmith12-29-06, 04:18 PM | There are just too many things to do with this for its 100gp price. 400gp (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/wondrousItems.htm#tree) |
| psly4mne12-29-06, 04:31 PM | The word "broken" is tossed around far too lightly here. Quall's Feather Token? Please... Thought Bottle certainly qualifies (remember the Ascended?) Candle of Invocation qualifies as well Nightstick counts too, I guess, just because it is undercosted Prayer Bead of Karma was just a typo Warbeasts and Phylactery of Change are undercosted. I wouldn't put them in the same category as the Thought Bottle. My printer is indeed broken. |
| amalcon12-29-06, 05:04 PM | The word "broken" is tossed around far too lightly here. The Thought Bottle is the undisputed king of cheese when it comes to items. If you measure everything by its standards, there are exactly two other things in the game that ares broken: the Manipulate Form ability (see: pun-pun) and the Masochism spell (see: omniscifier). The Thought Bottle, literally and truly, allows you to do ANYTHING. Even cheesewrought characters and the like do not approach the power of the mighty Bottle. The Nightsticks are in an obscure suppliment that practically nobody has. The Candle of Invocation, despite its low price, requires caster level 17 and a level 9 spell to make. Given that it's not so likely to be found as treasure, that means you basically can't get one until level 17. I don't deny its power, but it IS a high level item -- and the list needs some low level things too, IMO. As far as the list goes, I would also like to submit the various Rings of Spell Storing, for giving the fighter those buffs he was never meant to have. Even the medium is a high level item, however, and the minor is not all that great. |
| Adroit12-29-06, 05:20 PM | On the contrary, I'd say the Minor Ring of Spellstoring is a great bargain at a mere 18,000gp. Extended Wraithstrike, anyone? It gets even better when you have a martial adept with several ways to act multiple times in a round. Island in Time, White Raven Tactics, the usual. Now you are throwing down at least 3 full-attacks that you can power attack your heart out on and be sure of hitting with your final iterative attack even when you toss on Slashing Flurry and GTWF. |
| Aegeu12-29-06, 09:22 PM | The Candle of Invocation, despite its low price, requires caster level 17 and a level 9 spell to make. I don't deny its power, but it IS a high level item -- and the list needs some low level things too, IMO. Sheesh. Does your campaign have no magic item shops? DnD is high magic by default, remember. This is doubly true on the CO boards. Just because your character can't cast gate doesn't mean that no one can cast gate. |
| maltravois12-31-06, 05:03 PM | I know this may be a questionable source. But it does look pretty official and is WOTC. Energy Bow 22,600gp +2 Comp Long Bow that accomodates any strength. Arrows do 2d6 damage and are force (ignore incorp) Can fire normal or force arrows. If wielded by a character named Hank, it can power attack at range. From the Animated Series Handbook (comes with the D&D Cartoon DVD series). |
| GraveDigger01-01-07, 11:01 PM | Tome of clear thought +5 to any ability score, and I've not seen where it limits how many your character can use. That is some crazy mess! Sheesh monk with 10 of those to wisdome and it only costs 137,000 gp. |
| PhaedrusXY01-01-07, 11:17 PM | Tome of clear thought +5 to any ability score, and I've not seen where it limits how many your character can use. That is some crazy mess! | obrysii01-02-07, 12:11 AM | The Idols of the Dragon are pretty nice. For sheer power, the Ironwyrm Golem is pretty powerful. I don't know if you count them as an item, but since you can buy one ... |
| CannibalSmith01-02-07, 01:08 AM | Marvelous Pigments (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/wondrousItems.htm#marvelousPigments) |
| Pantorts01-02-07, 05:29 AM | What about the ring of Dragon Friendship, from Draconomicon. No dragon will voluntarily attack or otherwise attempt to harm the wearer, unless the wearer attacks the dragon in any way, no save or anything. Think about the possibilities. Say an evil dragon is holding a princess hostage, instead of going to slay the dragon, you can go in, grab her under the dragon's nose..and walk out with her. Or take the dragon's stuff (well..if your DM is dumb you could do these) 28750g for this thing. |
