Greetings everyone,

Working up on an idea for a character based on Brother Cadfael in Living Greyhawk. Other than a level or two as a fighter (He was a Crusader) what other skills/classes would work in order to create him? While he is a monk, it is more of the cloisered cleric rather than a martial artist monk. His knowledge of herbs and medicine points me more towards Druid. Levels in Spot, Search, and Sense Motive seem to be in order.

if you look at archivist in heroes of horror, it says they are cloistered clerics. it seems to fit with the flavor. just a thought.

It's a Living Greyhawk thread, people. Check Mommy's LG thread for details if you don't already know the limitations.

What's your source for Cadfael? That would help me out a bit. Without it, I'll take a few guesses.

1) Righteous Knight. This could go a couple ways, including straight paladin, or some sort of fighter/cleric. I highly recommend templar and hospitaler, respectively.

2) Travelling holy man. I'd probably go monk 2/cleric 4/sacred fist 10, or some variation on that.

Knowledge of herbs and medicines, to me, means ranks in heal and possibly herbalism. Anyone could do that. Druids get wild shape, and lose turn undead. Does that fit with the image in your head? I'm going to guess that it doesn't.

You could go with cleric/ranger instead. Ranger levels help your reflex save, give you skill points for spot and listen, and help you fight better. It's a decent compromise.

If you want to be a monk, perhaps you could join a meta-organization that includes a monastery. Veluna has quite a few, Dyvers has one, and I'm sure there are a lot more.

Brother Cadfael is a character by Ellis Peters that got its start from A Morbid Taste for Bones , a murder mystery. There are about 20 books in the series.

Druid may work for a level or two for his knowledge of plants and medicine. I do not see him as being "Lawful" so Monk might be out.

Archivist might be an option in the future as they are adding Stormwrack, Heroes of Battle and Heroes of Horror to the allowed books but not what specific feats/Classes ect.

I would start him out as a ranger (he was a "man of the world" with a lot of skills, but he was also a knight with all that that implies), then shift him to a skillmonkey class like rogue, then to Justicar. Favored enemy human, cause he understands people. Tracking and a high search/spot/listen check fits his forensic evidence pretty well, and you can work in prof herbalist and kn nature from the ranger level as well. Should you wish him to be old, maybe make him a grey elf or something.

LG is a lot more violent than his novels, if he was a LG adventurer he'd have kept his martial skills more to the fore. He won't have a sheriff to do the heavy lifting for him. You might also consider playing a "younger version" who hasn't yet retired from "the world" into the monastary and build him more like a knight, but with some skillmonkey stuff.

I will have to look more into his "early" life. I was thinking of Ranger to start and fighter for when he was in the Crusades. A level or two as Rogue for when he was a sailor. I do not see he as a Justicar but they do not allow the Inquisitive from Eberron. I will have to do some more research on Cadfael in order to tweak him a bit. The concept might be nice but limited due to LG.
