seeking help on finishing a build. i'm entering a game and so I've got to make a character, ecl 14.
a bugbear (+4) rogue 3/ftr 4/tribal protector 2 = ECL 13
it seems like a solid build so far given that bugbears are typically multiclass fighter rogues, and now i'm at a loss for the 'final' level before I start playing. coming up with a backstory for this character is going to be interesting cause I have no idea where to start, I've just had a urge to play a bugbear for a while now.
only 3 feats slots are spoken for due to my entry into Tribal Protector
any suggestions on how to finish this? or any adjustments that you would make?

I really feel *wrong* speaking here since Otto is the de facto Bugbear Guru in these here parts. :tiphat:

That being said, can you share with us your combat style for your character? What weapon(s) would you like to fight with?

I like Bugbear builds that focus on being Spiked Chain Tripping experts (to really take advantage of that high STR of theirs). A level of Barbarian pays off in this build as well.

I also like Bugbear builds that focus on stealth, due to the excellent racial skill bonuses they get. Ranger/Rogue builds really pay off here.

I'm not too keen on taking Ftr4 in a Bugbear build - Ftr2 in the build prefix is sufficient enough to accompany other levels in Rog, Barb, and/or Ranger.

Snow :cloud9:

P.S. Otto, Otto, where for art thou, Otto .... ? :behold:

fighter 4 isn't crucial, I still have 4 days till game day but a few hours after I posted I thought maybe a rogue 3/ftr 2/bbn 2 prefix might be better suited. ranger didn't even enter my thoughts.

as for combat/weapons, I was thinking flail and shield... possibly twf/improved shield bash. Flail, mainly because like the bugbear, I have never used a flail or used flail in a build and thought it might be fun. so ranger would be a better route to go if really want a shield bashing bugbear :)

Go nuts with ECL and add the half-dragon template. The boost to stats and racial hit dice is nice for a bugbear.

Maybe ranger3/barbarian2/HorizonWalker1/rogue1/TribalProtector2? That would give you TWF, good skills, good Fort. and Reflex saves (but sucky Will, unless Tribal Protector has good Will saves), immunity to fatigue for your rages, and fast movement. You could take another level of rogue later for evasion, if you want. Extra Rage from MotW would be a good feat for this character I think.

Edit: Gah, favored class is rogue. Needed to tweak it a bit, heh.

i would not bother with twf, twohanded is clearly superior with such an high strength.

get yourself light armor and spring attack while taking 3 levels of rogue, 2d6 sneak are always valuable as are evasion and the skillpoints.

i didnt look closer at tribal protector, but if you want to stay TWF i would defenitly go with ranger, eventually 3rd to get endurance which can be used for templar or horizon walker.

if not i would go with rogue3/fighter2/barbarian1 if you can qualify for TP like this (without my books).

I would probably just take another level of rogue. It lets you build up some more skills. You could even throw all of those ranks into Use Magic Device to max it out at 15 ranks. If possible (since its not listed as an actual item) you could get a ring that gives +5 competence to Use Magic Device for 2500gp. That alone would give you a total +20 (not including Cha bonus) so you could use a wand or first-level scroll without fail, and outside of combat could take ten and use even 9th level scrolls without fail.

Plus you are going to level up some time (maybe even the first session). So then you just toss another level into rogue and get the extra sneak attack for +3d6. Works for me.

another reason to take 4 levels of rogue, is so that with 2 levels of barbarian, you end up with imp. uncanny dodge.

I would suggest Rog4/Bbn2/Ftr2/Tribal Protector2

I've just had a urge to play a bugbear for a while now.

You have chosen... wisely.

:D

Wow, did I ever drop the ball in not seeing this post earlier.

As far as the levels go...

I like Bugbear (4), Ranger 1 / Rogue 3 / Horizon Walker 2 / Barbarian 2 / Tribal Protector 2

Take Underground Terrain mastery for 120 ft. darkvision and desert to avoid the fatigue. Bugbears already get a bonus to stealth, so taking Marsh or Forest is out. Also, Tribal Protector gets a situational bonus to stealth skills.

It may seem like a better deal to take ranger to 3rd level, but I wouldn't worry about getting that endurance for free. The combat style won't get much use, so that's a moot point.

For the most part, the rogue levels should be kept. With the natural stealth and the ranger and horizon walker levels, the sneak attack will come into effect quite a bit.

Personally, I like Improved Sunder for a feat rather than the improved trip or disarm, but that's just a personal preference. A better min/max choice would probably be improved trip.

If this were a character I was playing, this is what I'd do:

Bugbear - +1 LA
1 - Bugbear - Endurance
2 - Bugbear -
3 - Bugbear - Power Attack
4 - Ranger 1 -
5 - Barbarian 1 - Rage, Fast Movement
6 - Barbarian 2 - Uncanny Dodge, Power Attack
7 - Rogue 1 - Sneak Attack 1d6
8 - Rogue 2 - Evasion
9 - Rogue 3 - Sneak Attack 2d6, Extra Rage
10 - Horizon Walker 1 - Underground Mastery
11 - Horizon Walker 2 - Desert Mastery
12 - Tribal Protector 1 - Improved Sunder, Improved Critical
13 - Tribal Protector 2 - Wild Fighting

Tribal Protector probably shouldn't be taken past 2nd level. From what I can tell, the rest of the levels are less useful than the Wild Fighting ability.

Pick up Boots of Speed (combined with Wild Fighting) to get your attacks at (BAB) +11/+11/+11/+6. With a two handed weapon, this probably beats out any two weapon combination you can come up with.

Not sure what your stats will be, but even starting with a 16 strength, +4 race, +3 level, +4 enhancement? = 27 (+8) easily, you'll end up with some major damage dealing capability. Greatsword 2d6+12 without a magic sword for 4 attacks is to be respected by any enemy.

Anyway, that's my take.

Cheers

Otto :)

You have Power Attack in there twice, Otto.

I concede to the min max. even though twf flail and shield sound cool, i shall take up thf a greatclub :D or greatsword. whichever. which makes even more sense because Tribal Protector requires power attack.
after some consideration, I'm going with Otto's suggestion.
rogue 3/bbn 2/ranger 1/horizon walker 2/tp 2
although I probably won't be taking Improved Sunder or Power Attack twice ;) and I don't think I want to be tripping or disarming either so I'm goign to look around for other cool feat to take in that place
as a sidenote, I never really planned on taking more than the 2 levels of tribal protector

Oops. :P

Replace that second power attack with power lunge.

Edit: Actually, since there is a free feat there again, and you're not going to go the sunder routine, I'd like to suggest EWP: Spiked Chain and Combat Reflexes.

We get a bonus to dex and con as well as the great strength boost, so that's not a half-bad route to consider.

Of course, if you're allowed to take the regular chain instead of spiked chain, that could be a better route. I'm not sure if that's an exotic weapon or not, but I don't think so -- which frees up another feat slot.

Cheers

Otto :)

Well, you are a high-STR, Power-Attacking Bugbear wielding a big-ass Greatclub.

A great feat for you would be Karmic Strike. Good luck finding a foe who even *wants* to hit you. Especially those with much smaller damage output than you (say TWF combatants or multiple natural weapons).

One more thing I forgot to add.

One thing that I really like for the Sunder build bugbear.

Shadowdancer.

Yep, 7' tall, 300 lbs., hide in plain sight, sunder opponent's weapon. Just a lot of groovy fun all around.

Kinda harsh on gaining magic items, but oh well.

Cheers

Otto :)

p.s. Good to see you posting again Snow. How's the business going? (That is why you disappeared for awhile, right?)

Hi Otto! :)

My favorite Bugbear!

I have to laugh at the imagery of a Bugbear Shadowdancer trapsing around the shadows, then smashing the living crap out of an opponent's flimsy sword. But you know .... Shadowdancer really meshes well with a Bugbear's racial abilities and bonuses. So the idea definitely has merit.

Yeah, both my coffee shops are doing good - thanks for asking. I took some time off this summer/fall to do a series of small-time modeling gigs in Milan & Paris that turned out horrible (lotsa BS, dissapointing $). No more. I've had enough of that biz. I really like having my own businesses - even though they are more a labour of love than a cash cow. Hope your muscle car project went well! Try to get your hands on one of those new Bugbear minis from the Dragoneye set ... they are very cool (some them last night).

Goblinhero,

I think the key to playing a good min/maxed Bugbear is to actually *avoid* going real heavy-duty on the min/maxing and instead make a solid, survivable build that really lets the Bugbear's inherent role-play wackiness take front-&-center. Bugbear's are just cool. And they need to smash things. And wield HUGE weapons. And eat things. Like people. Beyond that, I would go with a build that looks fun and perhaps is a bit "outside the box". Like a Shadowdancer build! :)

Half Shadow Dragon Bugbear(3 racial HD+4LA)
32 point buy:
Str:15(8)+4+8=27
Dex:16(10)+2=18
Con:15(8)+2+2=19
Int:12(4)+2=14
Wis:10(2)=10
Cha:8(0)-2+2=8

Level progression:
1 Bugbear Half-Shadow Dragon - Power Attack
2 Bugbear Half-Shadow Dragon
3 Bugbear Half-Shadow Dragon - Improved Sunder
(skills should be 6 ranks in Move Silently, 6 in Hide, and 3 in Perform(Dance), skills are a little tight for fighter, but it is possible to get the missing ranks in 4 levels.)
4 Fighter1 - Dodge( raise Con)
5 Fighter2 - Mobility
6 Fighter3 - Combat Reflexes
7 Fighter4 - Spring Attack
8-18 Shadow Dancer1-10(raise Str at 8, then Dex the rest of the way)

If you wanted to go for something a little different, you could take Wizard or Sorcerer levels instead of Fighter3 and 4, and delay Spring Attack till later on.

HP at 8th level(ECL 12) are:
10+6d10+d8+40: 87.5 average
Attack bonus is:6 base +9 str.
F/R/W:+10/+10/+2
AC:10+4 dex+7 natural :21
Has claws, bite, a negative energy breath weapon, and is immune to energy drain. Can max out all bugbear racial skills, get ranks in perform, and have ranks in one other cross class skill (Tumble might be best).

change my mind slightly since I've got Complete Warrior and am now going with Rog 3/Ftr 2/Rgr 1/HW 1/TP 2 as my current build. changed the Bbn levels to Ftr because I wanted the feats.
and since I dropped the Bbn levels, I don't see a use for Desert Terrain from Horizon Walker, but 120 darkvision is always useful.

1 Bugbear - Power Attack
2 Bugbear -
3 Bugbear - Endurance
4 Rogue 1 - SA +1d6
5 Rogue 2 - Evasion
6 Rogue 3 - SA +2d6, Cleave
7 Rogue 3/Ftr 1 - Improved Sunder
8 Rogue 3/Ftr 2 - Weapon Focus Greatclub
9 Rogue 3/Ftr 2/Rgr 1 - Track, Favoured Enemy, Great Cleave
10 Rogue 3/Ftr 2/Rgr 1/HW 1 - Underground
11 Rogue 3/Ftr 2/Rgr 1/HW 1/TP 1 - Improved Init, other stuff
12 Rogue 3/Ftr 2/Rgr 1/HW 1/TP 2 - Wild Fighting, Combat Brute
13 ?? Rogue 4 ??

another thought I had was Occult Slayer and "mumbo jumbo bad" type attitude hence the Improved Init for entry in a couple levels.
