| fendrin11-18-06, 08:39 PM | Hi all. i'm going to be joining an ongoing game next Friday night, and I was looking for some help with the build. here's the basics: The character will be starting at 6th level, and the campaign will (supposedly) be continuing to lvl 30. Current party composition: Dwarf Fighter-type(melee basher) Human Paladin (may change, prefers melee characters) Elven Ranger/Wizard (3/3, acts primarily like a mage) Halfling Rogue (typical dungeon-delver style) Another friend is going to be coming in with an elven cleric. As for what's allowed, it's basically core plus anything I can get the DM to approve. I don't know the DM personally, so I have no clue how lenient he will be. Thus I would like to stay predominantly core, and the less 'out there' or campaign setting specific, the better. If I can stay all core for the initial (lvl 6) build, that would be good, as it will give me time to convince the DM of any non-core material. Races should probably be limited to the PHB, and probably no templates. Attributes will generally be good. We have our pick of a few different stat arrays. One was all 14's, another was an 18, two 16s, and nothing lower than a 10. I don't remember the third, but I think it had 2 18s and an 8. I'm thinking about a bard. Probably a jester-like character. Either a juggler/weapon thrower or a trip/disarm expert, I think. Basic build: Bard 20 Bard 16/Fighter 4 Bard 16/Ranger 2/Fighter 2 Currently leaning towards something like: Bard 7/Master Thrower 2/Druid 1/Sublime Chord 2/Fochlucan Lyrist 8 Though that may be too complicated/have too many non-core elements. and really, FL is intimidating to a DM who isn't familiar with it. I'm more likely to be able to get away with: Bard 8/MT 2/SC 10 As you can see, I will probably be starting as bard 6. Thanks in advance for all your help. |

| PhoenixInferno11-19-06, 12:51 PM | Bard / MT / SC is simple and relatively non-threatening. I'd do that. |
| Bill Bisco: Average Adventurer11-19-06, 12:53 PM | Bard? Hmm. I don't really see how those master thrower levels are gonna help you. Personally. I'd go with more druid. I think Caelic made Killian Nature's Fang. It's a pretty decent build I think. |
| fendrin11-19-06, 01:46 PM | 1st, I love the new "multi-quote" feature! Bard / MT / SC is simple and relatively non-threatening. I'd do that. I think I'll try for the FL build, and if that gets shot down, focus in that one. they will be starting pretty much the same (bard 6, same/similar feats & skills), so I should be able to pull off either build. Bard? Hmm. I don't really see how those master thrower levels are gonna help you. Personally. I'd go with more druid. I think Caelic made Killian Nature's Fang. It's a pretty decent build I think. Well, the MT levels are in the Lyrist build to get Evasion. That, and I am thinking about the character as a juggler, and throwing weapons fit into that idea perfectly. As for the 'Killian Nature's Fang' build, I am not familiar with it, but I will look into it. Thank you both for the input. |

It's a pretty decent build I think. ... More druid, you say? Here's a different take: You could instead go: Bard 1/Druid 4/Green Whisperer 3/Arcane Hierophant 3/Sublime Chord 2/Arcane Hierophant +7 ... BTW, did you go with the Shapeshift variant just for flight? This build will give you the Wildshape of a 14th level Druid. Oh, and 9th level arcane & divine spells at 20th level. Off the top of my head, you need to be gnome, human, or half-elf to avoid multiclassing penalties... ... Green Whisperer is from Dragon Magazine #311, a 5 level bard/druid theurge PRC. There are cheesier versions of this build further down in that thread, but that didn't seem to be what you were looking for here... |
| ed20911-19-06, 10:57 PM | I'm more likely to be able to get away with: Bard 8/MT 2/SC 10 ... ooh, also, I would go with Virtuoso over straight Sublime Chord. Something like: Bard 9/Virtuoso 1/Sublime Chord 2/Virtuoso +8 ... not exciting, yet still effective & very bardly... |
| fendrin11-20-06, 12:15 AM | Ok, I just got back from a character brainstorm/creation session with the other new player and another friend of ours, who is already playing in the game. The general consensus was that the party needs an arcanist more than another divinist, and definitely more than a throwing-focused build. Also, skills got VERY tight, so I've decided to use rogue instead of Master Thrower. Another upshot is that it is one less PrC to justify. So here is what I've got so far: Forrest Gnome rogue 2/bard 7/druid 1/sublime chord 1/fochlucan lyrist 9 or, if FL is out of the question, rogue 1/bard 8/ranger 1/sc 2/ eldritch knight 8 only 10 levels of bardic knowledge/music, but still get the epic-friendly 16 BAB and 9th level spells. Starting character will likely be: rogue 1/bard 5 |
