Every time I try to come up with a Necromancer NPC I end up giving up. I don't really know where to start. Wizard, Cleric, Prestige Classes? A combination of all three? I've even purchased some third party materials on the subject but I don't really think some of it is all that balanced.

If you were looking to create an NPC that matures with the PC's and increases in level apropriately how would you go about it? I wouldn't mind looking at several different builds using material from various sources. I would prefer if it was 3.5 if possible although I don't know that 3.0 PrC's would actually invalidate the PC that much. I have virtualy every book published by WotC as well as more than a few third party books as well.

Any thoughts?

I would use either strait cleric for a death priest or True Necromancer PrC if you want an actual arcane necromancer. Strait cleric is easy enough, true necromancer I would use Cleric 3/Wizard 3/Mystic Theurge 2/True Necromancer... that's the quickest way into it. Then you just need to figure out what you want to do with your feats and such.

Check out these clerics: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=150894

I think I'm actually going to wind up going with a modified version of the second one with cleric8/MysticWanderer2/Nightcloak2/MasterOfShrouds8. You still have 18 levels of turning ability and get some cool abilities from the two level dip PrCs.

Check out Eagle Prince's thread on good undead to use, also.
