Hi,

I'm starting a level 18 dungeon crawl campaign and i was going to take a grey elf wizard. I wanted to make it so that he has as many spells per day and damage enhancers on his spells as possible. What would be the best way to do this as we are using OGC, the core rule books, the complete books and possibly some others.

Essentially I want a character that can destroy my enemies quickly and preferrably before my 'allies' do.
I will ideally want to take the polymorph spells.

what level do you start at?

Sorcerer might be better for you, or Warmage or even warlock (he isn't as strong but he can last all day).

ECL 18 is the starting point.

What book are the warlock and warmage in?

No it isn't. Adding your intelligence to damage with Warmage spells is a spit in the ocean. Add to that the fact that direct damage is one of the weakest primary tactics and you have a crappy character class.

The only thing that saves Warmage is the armored casting and free sudden feats, neither of which is really that good in the end, as they are so easily surpassed by a Wizard with metamagic rods.

So what sort of caster (or maybe shooter) would be best to powergame my way through monsters before my party has a chance to touch them.

I also want to be able to use and abuse spells such as polymorph

A classic:
Wiz5/incantatrix10/Archmage3 is definitely not a bad choice if you start at 18th level.

Instant metamagic means that lets say you start your round by casting a twinned-empowered-sonicsubstituted scorching ray. They rays do 18d6*1,5*2=54d6 in total if your touch attacks all hit (some will miss most likely). Then you notice that your opponent is still standing and its vital he drops now so you cast one more instant metamagic quickened empowered sonic substituted scorching ray (you have memorized it as empowered) for 27d6 more damage.

Archmage is vital for a blaster for sculpting and for mastery of elements. You want to have both of those abilities. Incantatrixes improved metamagic is great as you can regularly memorize your spells as empowered as it is definitely worth it. Then there is the instant metamagic which is a great ability to have for a wizard as it makes you more spontaneous. You can suddenly decide you need that one more spell and instant metamagic a quickened spell on the spot and so forward.

Also, is there any way for me to gain a divine rank or two? I am not fussy about racesDo you mean a divine caster level or 2? Divine ranks are something gods have... Why would you want a divine caster level, anyway? Pick the Arcane Disciple (Healing) feat if you want to be able to cast a few healing spells, and/or use Wands and Staves with healing spells in them. Arcane Disciple is in either Complete Arcane or Complete Divine.

Incantatrix is in the Player's Guide to Faerun. It is arguably the most powerful arcane prestige class in any official D&D book. Energy Substitution is a feat (Complete Arcane I think, also in the SRD here (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/divine/divineAbilitiesFeats.htm#energySubstitut ion) ). The archmage also can pick an even better ability called Master of the Elements, or something like that.

If your GM allows the use of Races of Destiny, you should most definitely become an Illumian rather than a Grey Elf. Illumians can be real good wizards, especially if they take the Krau sigil and then any other. The Naen sigil also goes quite well with this and focuses the character on becoming a great mage.

You're a specialist Transmuter. Transmuters are great for the party as they have an amazing versatility. The Geometer is from Complete Arcana. There's definitely more powerful prestige classes out there, but it fits very well with the sigil focused Illumian. The Spellglyphs are interesting flavor and the absolutely greatest feature of the class is that you have Book of Geometry, which allows you to write any spell into your spellbook using only a single page. So now building up your spellbook isn't really that expensive anymore (meaning you'll later have more money to spend on magic gear). Lately you have been donning the title of Archmage, adding more to your versatility.

Transmuter 1 - Spell Focus (Evocation)
Transmuter 2
Transmuter 3 - Enhanced Power Sigils
Transmuter 4
Transmuter 5 - Craft Wondrous Items
Transmuter 6 - Spell Focus (Transmutation)
Geometer 1
Geometer 2
Geometer 3 - Skill Focus (Spellcraft)
Geometer 4
Geometer 5
Transmuter 7 - Arcane Mastery
Transmuter 8
Transmuter 9
Transmuter 10 - Spell Penetration, Craft Staff
Archmage 1 - Spell Power
Archmage 2 - Mastery of Elements
Archmage 3 - Mastery of Shaping, Greater Spell Penetration

While perhaps not the most powerful character out there, it's in my opinion a quite interesting character. You have chosen the path of the transmuter because you prefer to change things, both yourself, objects and enemies. You're an asset for your party as you can do quite some buffing with the lower level spells that you'd not be using most of the time anyway. You can also do such nasty tricks as Baleful Polymorph and Flesh to Stone. Of course you have some offensive spells too, but you don't really need to prepare yourself for all situations and with all sorts of various shapes. You can change your fireballs into cones of electricity or any other energy and shape simply by willing it. It has cost you a few spell slots, but it also means that you can adapt to any situation, using a fireball against cold creatures and so on, bypassing resistances and immunities without too much trouble.

One of the most powerful things you possess is possibly your caster level, which is boosted to 22 because you're an Illumian and because you've got Spell Power from Archmage. Keep a Rod of Greater Extend in your backpack when you go on adventures and cast an Extended Shapechange with this rod. This means that the spell lasts 440 minutes. And since it's cast with Caster Level 22, you can take forms up to 22 HDs. This means that it lasts more than 7 hours and you can take a form like Solar! So during battle you start out becoming a dragon and use a breath weapon, just to soften things up a bit. For instance the Red Dragon breath is a cone of fire and you can become an adult Red Dragon, dealing 12d10 damage! This is more than most of your offensive spells will deal less than. Next you'll become a Solar, giving you immense power. You have a high AC, a DR of 15/epic and evil, several immunities and resistances, a Protective Aura that isn't bad, it makes you immune against your opponent's low level spells (up to 3rd level) and you have a Spell Resistance 32! Add to this Regeneration 15 and you're very very difficult to kill. And since a Solar generally looks like a humanoid you can use all your items and all your spells in this form! Your Arcane Mastery and your Spell Penetration feats are great for ensuring that you penetrate your enemy's spell resistance, if any. Most things that you normally would use spells to you should use your various forms for. Read Monster Manual and others for the various extraordinary and supernatural abilities that you can do. Study Draconomicon for various breath weapons of dragons you can become. The possibilities are endless.

You're quite an item crafter of the party. You can craft wondrous items, staffs, scrolls and spellglyphs. If you don't wish to craft anything it's not difficult to change the two craft feats to metamagic or whatever else you like. :)

I wanted to find a way perhaps to get myself divine rank zero or maybe even 1 or above.

There's no ECL on divine ranks. It's something that you need to earn, it's not something you can start out with, unless the GM has all characters being lower level deities. You could however make it the goal of the character that he wanted to become a god and the GM could use this to shape the campaign into the quest for divinity, which can take many levels.

You could add more levels of archmage if you wish. However you do have IMO the most valuable abilities. The Geometer levels aren't necessary and just there for flavor. Another flavorful ability may be the Mage of the Arcane Order, which gives you the ultimate in versatility in the Spellpool ability. Just make sure to teleport to the order and pay your dept from time to time and you'll be fine. The Incantatrix mentioned by others is possibly the best prestige class you can find, but since that wasn't in the allowed source material one must look at other alternatives.
Laurellien

01-08-06, 05:58 AM
Please reference which book the classes / feats you recommend if they can be found outside of the core rulebooks.

Flavor is not the complete goal of my character. The DM plans on mainly doing a dungeon crawl and probably nothing else, so all I want to really do is blast things as much as possible.

Also which book does the Incantatrix come from as my DM may allow that book.
Bialaska

01-08-06, 07:50 AM
Arcane Mastery is from Complete Arcane and allows you to automatize it as if you rolled 10 on your roll to do spell penetration. Gives a great consistency which means that you won't roll low. If you can't get through Spell Resistance memorize a spell to lower it and you should do fine. However there are very few beasts with more than 36 SR (the number that you get with the Illumian build).

Enhanced Power Sigils is from Races of Destiny, just as Illumian and it simply raises the bonus that your sigils give with +1.

Geometer is from Complete Arcane.

And if you want to blast things just get that Shapechange boosted as much as possible and shift through dragon forms and Solar form, dragons for offensive use with breaths that deal immense damage and Solar for the protection. The path to the Shapechange matters not, as long as you get it! ;)

If you can get leadership in there pick up a nightmare for easy escapes, or even another mage 2 levels under you with incantatrix levels who is using metamagic on your spells.

At what level does the Geometer get his ability to only have to use 1 page/spell?

Would it be better to take more wizard levels?
Bialaska

01-08-06, 05:24 PM
Wizard levels after level 5 are waste. Sure you get a feat on 10th and 15th, but all prestige classes are providing more than that. Maybe not in terms of bonus feats, but class features gives more. Two levels of Geometer gives you the ability to use only one page per spell no matter the level. The remaining 8 pure wizard levels after 2 Geomancer could be used on something else. I do suggest that you should try to keep sticking to spells that give +1 caster level.

Another build that might be interesting:

Race: Illumian (Sigils: Naen Krau)
1 Cleric - Domains: Magic + Planning (from Complete Warrior), Skill Focus (Spell craft)
2 Wizard
3 Wizard - Enhanced Power Sigils
4 Wizard
5 Wizard
6 Dweomerkeeper (Complete Divine Web Enhancement) - Spell focus (Evocation)
7 Dweomerkeeper
8 Dweomerkeeper
9 Dweomerkeeper - Persistent Spell
10 Dweomerkeeper
11 Dweomerkeeper
12 Dweomerkeeper - Spell Focus (Transmutation)
13 Dweomerkeeper
14 Dweomerkeeper
15 Dweomerkeeper - Divine Metamagic
16 Archmage
17 Archmage
18 Archmage - Practiced Spellcaster (Wizard)
Archmage abilities: Mastery of Shaping, Mastery of Elements, Spell Power

This character has a few divine spells. Which doesn't give much, except the spells are cast as if you're a level 4 character, so your few cure light wounds can save you a couple of potions or wand uses. But you're not a cleric because you think it's fun, you're a cleric because it's good for you. :D

You need arcane spells and divine spells to become a Dweomerkeeper. Which is sad, but of course considering what it gains, if you could gain entry simply by being a wizard, I think it would be one of the most popular prestige classes. You only have spells as a level 17 wizard (although your caster level is 17 +1 for Practiced Spellcaster, +3 for Illumian with Enhanced Krau sigil +1 for spellpower) for a 22. But this still gives you 9th level spells.

Dweomerkeeper gives you the ability to make 4 spells Supernatural abilities each day rather than normal spell, meaning that you bypass spell resistance, it can't be dispelled, etc. You also gain 5 spells that you can cast spontanously. Oh, and metamagic feats cost 1 less to use! The 5 gained spells should be various damage dealers. That means you'll be able to fill up on your versatile spells for various situations.

Load up on things to boost your turning. 12 turn attempts should be minimum and more would be great.

At the start of the day you do two things...
1: Cast a Shapechange persistent (use Divine Metamagic) as a Supernatural ability
2: Cast Sphere of Ultimate Destruction (Complete Arcane) persistent (use Divine Metamagic) as a Supernatural ability

So now you move through the scenario in some form of a creature with less than 22 HD (Solar?) with all it's immunities and resistances (and can change as a free action, meaning you can adapt to the situation), while your Sphere of Ultimate Destruction (dealing 40D6 damage on a failed fortitude, 5d6 on a succesful save) hovers next to you, directed by you in battle, where it'll attack each round. And the great part? It cannot be dispelled, Mordenkainen's Disjunctioned, etc. Antimagic Field can suppress it while you're near, but nothing else. You have versatile spells memorized, but when it's needed you can spontanously use a level 3 spell slot and cast fireball. Although you might want it to be ice. And a cone...

Before I show you how to build an obscene character, a few questions:

1. Why do you want to keep your party from having a chance to fight the monsters?

2. Exactly which books can you get access to? An Artificer can out-blast any wizard, if it comes down to it--and outdo them in the shapechange department as well--but you'd need access to Eberron for that.

That was my question as well... its not like if you kill it first you get the xp.

You have fastest leveller...

fastest way to level is to show up to every game from what I have seen, roleplay a lot, and do the DM favors to earn bonus xp.

I tend to only do the first two.

The reason I want to kill the enemies first is because my DM is awarding exp in a computer game way i.e. he splits the exp between all of the people who actually delt damage to or weakened the monster. I know it shouldn't happen but that is how he has decided to play it.

Hm. While I normally don't say "Try to get the DM to change his mind"...

Try to get the DM to change his mind.

Seriously--there is NO incentive in such a party for people to help each other. Why should I waste time healing you? It means you can gobble up more of my XP.

There's also some pretty serious potential for stepped-on toes and annoyance. How long do you think the other party members will be content to sit back and watch you solo level while they do nothing?

I can give you a character who'll kill darned near anything instantly, will almost never get hurt, and is all but guaranteed to go first every time, but...I think it's a really bad idea.

The rest of my party members are also out to kill things first, so much so that before we were told to remake our characters to a glaring dm mistake, the LG fighter of the party (ECL 18 in a level 10 group) was threatening to kill anyone who touched a monster he was fighting.

Laurellien

01-10-06, 06:03 PM

Bialaska

01-11-06, 09:24 AM
Illumian Cleric/Transmuter/Dweomerkeeper/Archmage 1/5/10/4
Sigils: Krau + one other
Domains: Planning, Magic
Archmage abilities: Mastery of Shaping, Spell Power, Mastery of Elements, Spell-like ability (Baleful Polymorph)
Feats: Extend Spell (Bonus), Spell Focus (Evocation), Scribe Scroll (Bonus), Enhanced Power Sigils, Skill Focus (Spellcraft), Persistent Spell (Bonus), Divine Metamagic, Spell Focus (Transmutation), Practiced Spellcaster (Wizard), Eschew Materials

You can exchange a level of Archmage with a level of transmuter at no problems, just give up the Spell-like ability. The rest of the build optimizes you though. You have a few cleric spells, so you can do a little healing on your party (even if the gaming style doesn't encourage this. I guess out of battle this will be useful though).
Persistent Shapechange turned into a Supernatural Ability is what you must rely the most on. You cast as if you're level 24, giving you the ability to become creatures with less than 24 HD. You can change into a regenerator and heal any damage done to you and you can adapt to any situation. The breath weapons of various dragons gives you powerful area attacks and you can have any type of breath weapon as you can change as a free action.
Your other spells, as a level 19 wizard? Well, use them as needed. Various spells for whenever you need it.

Why don't we just rename this thread "Build me a character using no expanded books"? All these suggestions are great for you, but if you don't have access to the source material that is being used in the builds, what is the point. You won't know what any of the special abilities are/do of those prestige classes. Maybe you should just go with a spiked chain barbarian with combat reflexes and improved trip abilities. :thinks:

Why not just play Pun Pun (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=491801)

I'm also going to chime and say that you might just want to talk to your DM and suggest that perhaps this might not be the wisest course of action on his part.

There have been some really good builds posted here. If you really want to **** off your "allies," play a cleric with Divine Metamagic (Heighten) and just load up on save or die spells all the live long day. You drop a good 5-6 turn attempts into Heightening Implosion and suddenly things get hairy.

Cheers,

I recommend you talking to the PC's on the side, make sure everybody agrees split xp is fair, and then approach the DM.

as said before, bards become useless. Clerics can be powerful, and well... where is the motivation to heal your allies if you want them dead so you can do the most damage/kill the creature?

Also a LAWFUL GOOD character threatening others? yea ummm... talk to your DM it sounds like hes poisoning your game.
Laurellien

01-11-06, 01:46 PM
The way the DM managed to get around the lawful good thing was that he was only lawful good when in bear form (lycanthropy). I pointed out to him that as he can control this he cannot be un-lawful good outside of this form. He is not changing his exp allocation, and several members of the party were happy with it already.

The main reason I came to the CO board for help was that we had before hand decided what we were going to be and when i found out the exp system (I was a cleric), the bard and I protested and asked to change our characters. Now that he has had to rework the campaign due to being stupid enough to allow an ecl 18 character in a 10th level party i can remake the character (the bard cannot continue due to moving). I wanted a wizard as that is the class that I associate with killing machines.

I see what you are trying to do... you are trying to "play the game" and "win" to prove that it doesnt work cause no one else gets XP, but you. But, wasnt that the case before... the LG ECL 18 dude was doing?

But, all your doing is doing what he wants you to do... compete for XP.

BTW, most Video games RPG don't do what he is saying. They average out the XP to all the party for kills. And, alot of MMOs actually give bonus XP for group kills.

I really see this as a hopeless situation if you keep going down this path. I can see this being fun as a One Shot to see who gets the most XP (Score), but not as a traditional campaign.

With a few difficult to obtain exceptions, gaining Divine Ranks is a realm is completely controlled by your DM. Chances are that even achieveing DR 0 would require an adventure of epic porportions, or more heroes would be quasi-deities.

The only in text ways I am aware of that grant divine rank 0 involve either the Dragon Ascendent (A dragon PrC requiring BAB +30 to enter) or somehow acquiring Abomination Traits from the ELH.Or just use Lokiyn's trick: Use Ice Assassin from Frostburn to create an ice assassin of a god. If you can't make it spell-like or otherwise ignore the components (*cough*DweomerkeeperSupernaturalSpell*c ough*), you'll need a hair from their head or some such. Command the ice assassin to make you a proxy. Voila, Divine Rank 1.

If you don't go with DwK or similar, questing for one of Tiamat's scales or such could be a fun campaign goal. Don't tell your DM what it's for, just say your character collects rare items or some such... then watch his face when you cast Ice Assassin and give it the command. ;)

Dweomerkeeper is in the Complete Divine Web Enhancement (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/we/20040522a). If you build it "right" you can be popping out 4 Supernatural (i.e. no XP cost) Limited Wishes or Miracles a day. Go to town. ;)

Hey, if they want you to make a cleric, load up on Nightsticks from Libriis Mortis and make a persista-cleric. Divine Metamagic (Persistent) allows you to burn turning attempts to power metamagic, and Nightsticks give you 4 bonus turn attempts a pop. Take Initiate of Mystra from Magic of Faerun or Extraordinary Spell Aim (From Complete Adventurer? I don't have that book) so you can cast spells in your own antimagic sphere, persist Divine Favour + every other buff you can think of, and butcher the crap out of things while nobody else's items or spells work near you. :D Just for a laugh...

What other characters are in the group, besides the Fighter/Werebear? If you're looking for blasting power, a Sorcerer is probably better than a Wizard, because you get more spells/day, and it's not as important to have access to a wide range of spells. You can also make up for a lot of spells with Shadow Conjuration and Shadow Evocation.

Look at crowd control spells, too, like Solid Fog - these will help you pin down your enemies, while making it hard for your allies to attack..

dunno apart from that there will be a ghost gnome swashbuckler.

Because a certain person managed to get permssion to select things from a book we're not allowed, I was fortunate enough to be allowed a pair of underpants which are trapped so that whenever the command word (suggestion box open) is spoken, they cast greater restoration and CL 15 heal upon me

Is this a joke thread?

I assure you that this is not. I do however have to tell you that the campaign is soon so i aam now making my character.

Believe me, our dm can make mistakes, it is why we don't usually keep him for more than one campaign.
