Hey, I'm looking to make a good lycanthrop NPC to send with the players in my campeign. I need a good base animal with no more than 4 racial HD with as high of CON as possible. (Unless I'm misunderstanding the lycanthropy level hit. The part that confused me was the example of a hill giant were boar... 19 HD with a +7 level adjustment [7 HD+3ECL from lycanthropy, 12 HD+4 ECL for being a hill giant] with a challange rating of 11?!? That's a level 26 character with no class levels)

So anyone know of any? lycanthrops that work well?

Also a base Race I need. Again, High CON is good, I'm thinking Dwarf (unless I can get a higher con with little/no level adjustment) (heh... dwarf werebear... OUCH!)

I also realized, you should be able to put the lycan package on dinosaurs too (they're animals). A "Weredeinonychus" is hard to say but only a +7 level adjustment, +4 to STR and CON, and the pounce ability isn't too bad.

(note: ECL has to be capped at +7. So a base creature with a +1 ECL with a lycanthrope [+3] and a base animal of 3 HD is fine... but no more than 7 ECL)

Some ideas:

Dwarf (+2 Con) afflicted were-dire badger (+8 Con)
Barbarian 1/Animal 3/Barbarian +1

(+) loads of hit points, rage 2/day, cool flavour, track & toughness as bonus feats...
(-) kinda weak natural attacks

Dwarf (+2 Con) afflicted were-black bear (+4 Con)
Barbarian 1/Animal 3/Barbarian +1

(+) again: tons of hit points, rage, good grapple..., ok natural attacks.

Dwarf (+2 Con) afflicted dire-boar (+6 Con)
Barbarian 1/Animal 3/Barbarian +1

...you get the clou, i guess.

Some more exotic ideas:
Halfling (+2 Dex) afflicted were-cat (+4 Dex)
Swashbuckler 1/Animal 1 (i guess, cat's got 1/2 HD...)/Rogue 3
-> Sneak attacking weapon finessing ultra-sneak...

Elven (+2 Dex) afflicted were-leopard (+6 Str, +8 Dex, +4 Con!!!)
Barbarian 1/Animal 3/Ranger or something 1
-> excellent pounce/rake/improved grab build... with very fast movement (50', charge 100')

Any race (preferably high Con because of Poison save DC) afflicted large viper
Rogue 1/Animal 3/Fighter or something 1
-> Choose Ability Focus (poison), with Con 20 starting the Poison save DC will be 11(base)+5(Con)+2(Ability Focus) => 18, poison is dealing Con damage!!!

Half-orc/Orc (because of the Str) afflicted constrictor snake
Barbarian 1/Animal 3/Barbarian or something 1
-> Go for maximum grapple and deal nice constricting damage...

As you can see, the possibilities are endless. Try out the entomanothrope template from wizards.com... with the vermin type there are even more possibilities.

hope this helps

human afflicted were-lepard
barbarian 1 /ranger 1 /warshaper4/natures warrior5/Frenzied Berserker4
in epic:
human paragon 3/prc (+ 1 caster progression)1/shaper 1/FB 5-8/whatever

godies:
fast healing 2
reach 10´
+ 10 st +8dex +8co in hybrit form
critical immunity
+7 natural armor (from armor of the crocodile)
DR 3/- (natures warrior class feature) ==>improve with the feat: roll with it from SS
rage 3x / franzy 3 x (with extra rage feat)==>+10st +4co ,1 extra attack

if u have a crazy dm convince him of letting u buy of ur level adjustment (+2 from afflicted lyncantrope)

Just to be Clear its Animal HD + Class levles + 2 or 3 LA = ECL (not nessarly Change rating)

2 if Affected lycanthropes, which can no pass on the curse
3 is for natrual born which can pass on the curse.

SRD
Challenge Rating: By class level or base creature, modified according to the HD of the base animal: 1 HD or 2 HD, +2; 3 HD to 5 HD, +3; 6 HD to 10 HD, +4; 11 HD to 20 HD, +5; 21 or more HD, +6.

So the question is what target CR do you want to throw?

I'm more worried about actual ECL. I'm going to start out by having them sent out with a NPC to fight some "greater evil" (which will turn out pretty strong... but not overpowering) and just when they big villain is overthrown, attack the party with the lycanthrope (making it clear why he was helping... he wanted help over throwing someone to GET the position... not to fight evil)

Reason it's capped at 7 is I need the ECL to be 14... and he needs 7 levels of Wilder

Strategy is when you manifest Empathic Feedback, energy retort, and inertial barrier on yourself, then manifest Forced share pain on an enemy, you can just let them hit you.

Say they hit for 50 damage... the person sharing my pain takes half, the person who hit the wilder takes 13 of what's left (plus 4d6+4 from energy retort), and DR takes 5 away from what the wilder would actually take.

This means if someone hits the wilder for 50 damage, the wilder would take 7, one party member would take 25, and another would take 13+4d6+4.

Most of the group is fights melee, but if the cleric or sorcerer give the wilder any problems, wilder touches them with a "Empathic transfer" sucking 90 HP from them and healing the wilder with it.

Only reason I want lycanthrope levels is the wilder has a d4 hit die... I'm sure they could kill it with a d4 hit die... so I want him to have a boost to con.

I'm leaning toward a were-badger. afflicted, that would only mean a +2 adjustment, so the wilder could have 12 levels in wilder, making him much more of a challange. Plus as a were-badger he'd have a bonus to CON built in, automatic rage, and a burrow speed... that can be handy.

Still can't think of a good base race for the character though... there's always dumb old human but... I hate standard stuff.

(by the way, I'm not just an evil DM that wants nothing but to kill my characters... I'll wait until they're level 15 to throw them up against this... that'll balance out the fact that they have to fight it right after taking on a generic "boss")

In that case use a 2HD Animal DOG(RIDING), HYENA, Snake (Medium Viper), WOLF and use 5 Levels of Warshaper from the CW as well

that wil give you an ECL (2 animal+7wilder+5Warshaper) +2 or 3 = 16 or 17
