Im 10th lvl and have 24500 gp to build me an ancestral relic (as the BoED feat).

I would like to have "ghost touch" as an ability but beside that I am undecided.

What would you build into the sword, what would you recommend?

My character is a 6th lvl Ranger and 4th lvl Ghostwalker (Shadow Mage updated this old PrC to 3.5 from the Sword and Fist 3.0)

If you have regular access to greater magic weapon I'd do something like Ghost touch, Sure Striking, Metaline

Are there not any ideas as to what enchantments to fill into my ancestral relic...

So far this is what I've thought of:

Enhancement bonus +2 (8000gp)
Ghost Touch (2000gp)
Sure Striking (2000gp)
Corrosive (2000gp)
Keen (2000gp)

With strength and all the stats for my char to wield this weapon would be:

1d8+1d6 (acid)+5 crit on 17-20 x2 and ability to hit incorporal (or corporal if ethereal) creatures and bypass any enhancement bonus dependent DR... Isn't that neat, or do you have better/other suggestions?

Hmn... Ofcourse you know that your weapon will only be +3 right?

Metaline is a weapon enhancement that allows tyou to switch between all types of metals. I believe its found in the Underdark book.

Well appearantly not :)

I was explained earlier on by some other guys here at the forums about how the ancestral relic feat worked and I was under the impression that as long as I enchanted my weapon with a +1 enhancement bonus, I could go nuts with the rest of the "money", like written above...

Is that all wrong then?

Hehe, no no no, they are very wrong. The frist time, it costs 2.000gp for a +1 Enhancement, and remember, you have to follow the rules of constructing magic items, hence, the ancestra weapon must be +1.

So, then you want to make it Sure Stirking, thats another +1, costing you 6.000gp (6.000gp + 2.000gp = 8.000gp which is the price for a +2 weapon)

Next, we want Metaline, that would make your weapon +3 altogether. A +3 weapon is 18.000 gp worth, so you need to spend an extra 10.000 gp to make it a +1 Sure Striking, Metaline weapon (10.000gp + 8.000gp = 18.000gp, which is the price of a +3 weapon)...

Thats how it works, to bad buddy. :(

Well I did think it sounded too good to be true and honestly I think my DM (knowing the rules about it or not) would disallow my build anyways... So having a +1 sword with ghost touch and sure striking is absolutely fine with me...

Thanx for directions ;)

If you can in any way possible get reliable access to someone casting Greater Magic Weapon for you daily, don't ever get more than a +1 enhancement bonus on your weapon. Offer to buy the party cleric a Pearl of Power so he can cast it on your weapon when he buffs his in the morning, or something like that.

Also, there are no longer enhancement bonus based damage reductions (DR 20/+3, or whatever). Now it is DR X/magic, or X/silver, etc. So I don't know what Sure Striking is doing...

Hmn... though I cant find a reason why you must make the weapon +1 first before applying other enhancements, im sure its what intended, and im sure your DM would feel the same way.

Weapons with no +1 bonus, that sure is great, Wrathful Healing is equal to what bonus again?

Sure Striking is still useful against alignment stuff... or am I wrong?

I don't know what Sure Striking does, other than what the OP said it does (beats DR based on enhancement bonuses).

I was pretty sure about the +1 thingy. Still, it doesnt mean that Ancestral Relic has to follow those rules.

Anyway, found Sure Striking, PGtF pg 120: "...overcomes DR as if though it where aligned chaotic, good, evil, lawful whichever is most appropriet for the foe." +1 Bonus. 3.5 proof to.

Great stuff.

WEAPONS
Magic weapons have enhancement bonuses ranging from +1 to +5. They apply these bonuses to both attack and damage rolls when used in combat. All magic weapons are also masterwork weapons, but their masterwork bonus on attack rolls does not stack with their enhancement bonus on attack rolls.
Weapons come in two basic categories: melee and ranged. Some of the weapons listed as melee weapons can also be used as ranged weapons. In this case, their enhancement bonus applies to either type of attack.
In addition to an enhancement bonus, weapons may have special abilities. Special abilities count as additional bonuses for determining the market value of the item, but do not modify attack or damage bonuses (except where specifically noted). A single weapon cannot have a modified bonus (enhancement bonus plus special ability bonus equivalents) higher than +10. A weapon with a special ability must have at least a +1 enhancement bonus.

Emphasis mine.

Wrathful Healing (I believe) is a +2 bonus.

This confused me, I thought PhaedrusXY meant that with this feat, maybe, the enhancement +1 must req could be ignored.

Don't get above a +1 enchantment...see if your local cleric will do a GMW on you...or find a 1/day item to let you do it.

If you are getting metalline, see if the books have any metals out there that give the ghost touch property....I know serrin (sp?) wood gives ghost touch property, so there is probably a metal for it.

Are you planning on encountering a lot of DR'd creatures? If so then go for metalline/sure striking.

Other options:

Wounding (the one that does 1 con point per hit)
Sonic damage (less likely a creature will have resistance to this)

In 3.5 Sure striking automatically beats all Alignment based DRs. Still very handy at high levels.

This confused me, I thought PhaedrusXY meant that with this feat, maybe, the enhancement +1 must req could be ignored. No, I said don't ever get more than a +1 enhancement bonus on your weapon. You have to have the +1 in order to get special abilities, but anything more than a +1 is a waste, as you can add the enhancement bonus temporarily with Greater Magic Weapon, and get what is effectively a more powerful weapon for the same amount of money.

For example, lets say I have enough money to buy a +5 weapon. I could either get a weapon with a +5 enhancement bonus, or a weapon with a +1 enhancement bonus and +4 worth of special abilities. If I get the one with a +1 and a bunch of abilities, I can get my buddy the spellcaster to cast Greater Magic Weapon (GMW) on it.

Assuming his caster level is high enough, GMW can grant the weapon a +5 enhancement bonus. This overlaps (does not stack) with the +1 bonus on the weapon itself. Now, I effectively have a weapon with a +5 enhancement bonus and +4 worth of special abilities, for the price of a +5 weapon and one spell slot. A Pearl of Power is alot cheaper than the cost of enhancing a weapon from +5 to +9...
