I liked the idea of a non-mystic fighter who relies on his bare hands. Starting as a human with four levels of fighter has been a good start -- feats now include:
Weapon Focus (unarmed)
Weapon Spec (unarmed)
Power Attack
Imp. Unarmed Strike
Imp. Grapple
The charge feat whose name I forget that gives 1d12 damage on charging attacks

Another advantage: a large party. Many opportunities to flank, plus bonuses from a bard's singing. With a 16 strength, full Power Attack, a flank, and a bard, that's +7 to hit and 1d3+10 to damage. Not bad for a punch. Plus, I'm a decent shot with a bow at ranged enemies, and spiked armor is a possibility.

That 1d3 damage is an issue, though. I had planned to multiclass as a monk starting at 5th level, and try to talk the DM into swapping out some extraordinary abilities like slow fall in exchange for feats. There's also the martial artist core class in Beyond Monks (published by Goodman Games), though it has several features I'm not crazy about. What else might I do to bump up the base damage?

The shou disciple prc improves your unarmed damage as well. Perhaps consider taking the thayan gladiator prc?(with flavour tweaks) to enhance your unarmed damage.

The pugilist from dragon magazine found at crystalkeep.com specializes in unarmed combat. A binder (ToM) can choose a bind to give monk unarmed damage = to binder level. MoI has mauling gauntlets which increase damage when bound (to hands I think) = to twice the amount of essentia invested. For other variant classes check out: half-orc paragon or raging monk for entry into frostrager.
