Here's what I'm looking at doing: In the campaign my mage is currently in, the entire party is on a small island (about a week to walk from one end to the other), and there is only one city at one edge of the island. We were teleported to the island to start the campaign, and none of us had ever heard of it nor had any of the citizens of the city ever heard of the places we'd come from. Hence, we're thinking we're on some odd plane we've never been to before, and we have to complete a quest to earn our ticket home.

However, not having cities to stay at almost anywhere we might need to go is somewhat of a pain in the butt; it's hard to get a full night of sleep with things attacking us in the middle of the night. Hence, my idea: since my Mage likes crafting things, there must be a way to make structures in the middle of nowhere fairly quickly with spells. Also, he's wanting to create a small fort on the opposite point of the island from the city, as an inn for other adventurers on the island. So, I'm looking for the best ways to build structures quickly - found my own little mini-city without slowing the adventure down.

For little field shelters, it shouldn't be a big difficulty - A couple of Wall of Stone spells and Fabricate ought to make a single room, single story stone structure that will shelter us through a night. Or, even Major Creation and Fabricate; since these are temporary structures, it doesn't matter if they dissappear in a few hours.

For the more permenant inn, it's a bit trickier. The little places could well collapse in a few days due to not having good foundations, and that's not acceptable for a permenant structure. Hence, it will require digging down through the outer dirt. Would Stone to Mud (level the surface), Purify Water (mud to water), and Fireball (get rid of the extra water) be sufficient for clearing out and levelling stone to form a foundation? Any other ideas for how to move the dirt quickly and easily with just spells?

After that, I'm guessing it will be Wall of Stone for the base structure. The outer walls would be made up of two Walls of Stone with a gap, each plated with material from a Wall of Iron, and a Permenant Wall of Force between. The inn would have several sections - a stable for traveler's animals, farming areas to generate food locally, the actuall inn and tavern structure, and overseeing the whole thing, my own personall Mage's Tower in the center. The gate would be a Wall of Iron hit with a permenant Animate Object for standard tasks; it would have a physical connection in case some uppity jealous wizard decideds to dispel it, but otherwise, it wold be voice activated by those authorized to do it. Also, for an emergency - single use Prismatic Wall that could be dropped down in front of the gate, to prevent people from trying to bash it down.

Another thing I was thinking it could use would be a permenant Teleportation Circle to the town; that would be an easy way to get people to work there, and get supplies in.

Any other ideas for fortifying my little town, or other things you'd like, as an adventurer that visits the city, to have available at this kind of frontier outpost? It's unlikely to have to ward off a massive planar army or such, but it'll probably be routinely attacked by random evil beasties that make the area home.

If you take craft wonderous item feat there are many , many items that turn into dwellings availible in many books. In my own campaing we have a Secure Shelter that unfolds with bed, stove, and alarm spells all over it.
