I do not yet own the arms and equipment guide. One of my gaming buddies does but I will not see him until the game so I do not really have access to the book at the moment. I have heard that there is a list of prices for magical beasts in that book. We are starting a campaign in which we will be playing 2nd level PCs and will be starting with the second level PC gold. Meaning 900 gold. My question is how powerful of a creature could I get with that 900 gold? Just give me a general power range. Like would such a creature be a good way to spend all that starting cash? Also note that I am trying to find a legal way to produce my monster trainer character concept I am not simply trying to gain power. Almost all of my skills and gold will be invested in the care and feeding of these beasts. It might sound stupid but the character is something like a darker less friendly version of Haggrid form the Harry potter books. Little to no magic of his own but the uncanny ability to bond with magical beasts and train them to fighting evil. |

Paying someone to train it for 2 years while it grows up would cost you even more. At 2nd level you'll probably be limited to animals for a while yet and should be able to get good use out of them. I would suggest waiting until probably at least 5th or 6th level before you start worrying about buying magical beasts. What you might want to do, however, is spend some of that money on a farm out in the middle of nowhere and some hirelings. Use wilderness lore to track down your own animal young and raise them yourself when you're not adventuring. Then, when you do adventure, you'll have a ready supply of new trained animals to take with you while your hirelings care for the others and take care of the other creatures. |
