| macross3301-02-04, 11:12 PM | Ok, I am a level 5 mage Level 1 Incantrix (Gnome) My stats are STR8 DEX14 CON18 INT19 WIS12 CHA11. I need some advice on items for the character. I have 13000 gold to start with and no single item can be worth more than 3250gp. |
| Psifon01-03-04, 01:59 AM | :behold: !!WARNING!! HIGH MUNCHKIN ALERT !!WARING!!:behold: Put it all in your spellbook. And by that I mean, put it ALL in your spell book. First, take the craft wonderous items feat. Next, make a baccob's blessed book. Note that you can all of the following: 1) Buy spells from other casters at 50gp per spell level. 2) Scribe scrolls in your spellbook that you can't cast yet because they are oh, say 9th level spells. 3) Keep any spells that are already in your spellbook that are of opposed schools once you specializa as an incantatrix. So what this looks like is: You start out as a generalist mage. Decide ahead of time what schools you will lose at 6th level. I recommend enchantment and necromancy. Buy up all the spells that strike your fancy from these two schools. Buy spells all the way up to 9th level spells. Write them into your spellbook for free. Thats it. That's all you need to do. Now the way you want to sell this to your DM is in parts: 1) call him on the phone and tell him "I am taking the craft wonderous item feat, can I build myself a Baccob's blessed book?" if he says yes, make the BBB. 2) Later, on a different day, ask him if you can buy spells from the local mage guild. Point to page 179 of the PHB, upper left column, to set the price. Whatever you do, DON'T ask him how high level a spell you can buy. Just assume that you can buy any spells at all. 3) Start buying spells. Don't worry about level or anything. Buy the spells that are going to serve you best in the long run. Do this by taking spells that you can't duplicat the effects for. For example, if you lose necromancy, take horrid wilting, magic jar and astral projection. These spells are actually quite unique in the rules as they allow you to do things that you can't compensate for in other ways. 4) Kick back and start using the spells as you advance in level. Be low profile about this. You can't cast them yet, so your DM isn't really even going to notice that you have them untill you start using them, and who keeps track of another player's spellbook? Now he may say, "Sure, you can make the book, but you have to speld the XP and start a level lower than everyone else." If he does, ACCEPT THIS OFFER! this is because the 460 or so xp spent to make a BBB is chump change, and not only that, but if you are lower level than everyone else, YOU GET MORE XP under the new XP rules! So you MIGHT actually end up AHEAD by a little bit. At any rate you will soon catch up and not feal the loss past the first gaming session. At first, your character is going to have a rough time. He is going to be way behind the power curve for your class in terms of magic items and such. Ignore this. Just play defensively and keep your head down. Thats what wizards do best at low levels anyway. Later, you will have so many sweet spells, and such a huge spellbook that you can do what all wizard characters were BORN to do: MAKE YOUR DM CRY!!! So get out there and munckinize your character. Make us all proud! :D |
| Fiendish Dire Weasel01-03-04, 02:29 AM | Ok, now that was good! :smirk: |
| Psifon01-03-04, 04:23 AM | You are too kind:embarrass |
| Moherajikuyx01-03-04, 05:47 AM | YEAH! lolling lolling |

Or he could just say that you don't have the experience necessary to understand the spells that you scribed into your book and you did it wrong, then all you have in your book is a bunch of jibberish that cost you a lot of gold--which you don't find out until you can actually cast the spell later. Just because the Player's Handbook doesn't explicitly forbid something doesn't make it automatically legal, the grey areas like this are always a DM call. |

Everything I just posted is 100% completely legal. Munchkin as hell, but legal. The PHB is VERY specific as to what you need to scribe a scroll into your book, and being high enough level to cast the spell is NOT one of the criteria. Everything you are proposing to nerf it is a house rule. As for stealing your spellbook, that's easy to get around too. In Magic of Faerun there is a spell called Amenuisis. It lets you copy any writing quickly (Note that it does NOT allow you to learn spells faster!). Just learn that spell now (it's 3rd level), and make a SECOND baccob's blessed book as soon as you are able. Copy all your spells routinely into the backup spellbook, and keep it hidden under the floorboards of your house (or some other safe place). Now you have a backup, and a DM would have to be blatantly gunning for you to steal BOTH books. Somewhere a DM is crying.... |
| Snow Savant01-03-04, 12:03 PM | Fooey. Double post. |
| Snow Savant01-03-04, 12:06 PM | We've seen variations on Psifon's Incantatrix/Scribe trick a number of times in the past on this forum. Although his is advocated with more oomph and dedication. I pretty much thought it was SOP for most aggressive min/max Incantatrix players to do this little trick prior to taking Inc-1. Our party's Incantatrix did this last year a while back as well. And remember, he is spending cash on these spells and not on magical items. Hence, there is some semblance of balance. Psifon said: Now he may say, "Sure, you can make the book, but you have to spend the XP and start a level lower than everyone else." If he does, ACCEPT THIS OFFER! this is because the 460 or so xp spent to make a BBB is chump change, and not only that, but if you are lower level than everyone else, YOU GET MORE XP under the new XP rules! And a good tactic for magi or clerics who create magic items. My Arcane Trickster is constantly making even little/cheapo wondrous items just to stay a bit behind the XP curve of the entire party (gosh, they hate me for that). Actually makes Sorceror/Candle Casters a potentially worthwhile build to play. ;) XO, Snow :cloud9: |
| Kenkai01-03-04, 02:47 PM | how do you get more xp? i thought you get xp based off of the average party level? |
| Psifon01-03-04, 04:55 PM | This has changed. Each party member's XP is calculated individually, based on their own level, and divided by the number of party members. This means that lower level characters get more xp, causing them to catch up with the rest of the party. It also means that you can no longer take 3 10th level characters and a 1st level character and have an average party level of 7, causing all characters to rise metiorically. One side effect of this, however, is that magic item xp costs have pretty much gone away. |
| Kenkai01-03-04, 05:18 PM | wait, you just said that they calculate one person's xp then distribute that xp among the group. that makes no sense. |
| catharz01-03-04, 05:26 PM | The beautiful thing about thee Incantatrix abuse is that even if your spell book is stolen, you can still relearn the 'banned' spells. I have a feeling that the Inc is gonna get hit by the nerf bat ala Bladesinger. That the special 'you still know these supposedly banned spells' bit will probably just dissapear, at least for the Wizards. Sorcerors might be able to learn replacement spells, as per the normal class ability. |
| Psifon01-03-04, 07:45 PM | Yeah, the release of Unearthed Arcana is pretty much going to be the death of the incantatrix I figure. |
| RabidWeasel01-03-04, 08:07 PM | I need to read the DMG more. And maybe pick up CWI for my druid :D |
| macross3301-03-04, 11:32 PM | Sweet :smirk: However I am still limited by the single item cap costs.. so no boccob book for now. However I will see about the copying loop hole. To minimize the backlash by the DM, what are the must have Necro/Enchant spells? |
| Psifon01-04-04, 06:48 AM | Well, you want to ask the questions: "what spells am I actually likely to cast?" And "What spells are so unique that there are no other ways to do the same thing?" For instance, enervation is a spell you can live without. Sure it's cool, but when it comes right down to it, this is just a kill the bad guy ray. There are lots of those (disintegrate comes to mind, as does polar ray). On the other hand, there is NOTHING in the game that does what Magic Jar does. This spell is truely unique and very powerfull. So a partial list might include: Magic Jar Horrid wilting (because it is not elemental damage) Whail of the Banshee Astral Projection Dominate Person and Monster Well, you get my drift. This is going to depend a little on your style of play, but keep in mind, there are spells that you will never cast, because they are only usefull "on stage" when you are actually in combat, like horrid wilting and fly. Then there are spells that are more usefull "off stage" and that are extremely usefull for solving specific plotline related problems, like astral projection and discern location. You can live without a lot of the "on stage" spells, because there are so many other options available to you in combat. But take all of the "off stage" spells you can get, because these often solve problems that there is just no other way to solve, except to buy it from an NPC. This amounts to asking the DM "pretty please?" which means that he is now handing you the solution to your problem. This doesn't feal good for either the dm or the player, so just don't go there. hope that helps. |
| JoostBuijs01-04-04, 08:17 AM | Just a question .. Everyone seems to love item creation, how does the DM fit it in? Our DM finds it highly annoying, cause you can't do anything for like a what .. a month(in game time), if you want to make a bit of an item? =\ Meanwhile the rest of the party has already been doing whatever and probably reached +10 levels. Just wondering if I do anything wrong then. |
| Whakapapa01-04-04, 08:30 AM | Psifon, that is soooo cheasy!!! I LOVE IT!!! :cloud9: :cloud9:    haven't thought of that uber cheasy combo :D |

| Hanniball01-04-04, 01:41 PM | problem: I have 13000 gold to start with and no single item can be worth more than 3250gp. boccob's blessed book Price= 12,500gp solution=first of all you can probably convince your DM that the ACTUAL price of the BBB is only 6250 because that's how much your "spending" on it. (when creating an item you spend half the market price in raw materials) Now, you make a weaker version of the BBB but you do it twice. I.e. a BBB that only has 500 pages (instead of 1,000) may be able to be passed off as a 6250 gp item meaning that it'll cost you 3125 gp to create one! this is not guaranteed but it's worth a shot. either way...just my 0.02 cp |
| Boondoggle01-04-04, 06:34 PM | Originally posted by Kenkai item creation doesn't take all day. you can work on it for al ittle while every day, i'm sure you can work it into your schedule between spell preperation and breakfast. Umm, it takes 8 hours a day. You can still do what you wish with the rest of the day, but at least 8 solid hours need to be devoted to crafting it for the day to count. |
| jtgalt01-04-04, 09:02 PM | Since you need to spend 8hrs a day crafting items and D&D only allows travel for 8hours without resting and you'll need 8hrs of sleep to get spells back, item #1 should be a ring of sustenance. Then you have tmie for everything ;-) |
| Kenkai01-04-04, 09:07 PM | in order to prepare spells you need 8 hours of rest. then after those 8 hours it takes 1 more hour to prepare the spells. so 9 hours out of the day to prepare spells, 8 hours of movement, leaves 7 hours in a day to work on magical items. most people won't be moving for 8 hours or fighting for 8 horus in a day, i'm sure you could fit in 8 hours to craft items. do these hours need to be all at once or can they be in intervals? |
| Whakapapa01-05-04, 08:59 AM | if you are in a horsewagon, you could craft items while traveling |
| JoostBuijs01-05-04, 09:05 AM | I am sure it is possible, but its quite annoying at the least ;) .. it's hard if your in one of those.. sleep - fight - sleep campaigns. |
| Boondoggle01-05-04, 04:10 PM | Sorry, you're not going to have a magical lab in the back of a horsewagon. The ring of sustanance means the "wearer needs only sleep 2 hours per day to gain the benefit of 8 hours of sleep." It's not explictly stated, but I'm pretty sure one of those benefits is spell slot refreshment. |
| Gilrion01-05-04, 07:17 PM | An alternative to the Boccob's Blessed Book is MoF's Kiira. It gives you +2 to all Knowledge checks and can hold 30 spells of any level. Unfortunately it costs 7500 gp. Even if you craft it yourself, that's still 3750, breaking the limit to a single magical item by a mere 500 gp. Too bad. :( |
| macross3301-07-04, 10:14 PM | DM nixed the idea of paying for spells from a NPC spellbook. "Has to be done in game" So I am now stuck paying for any spells I want in scroll form. This will of course probably kill off a lot of the higher level stuff that requires components. thanks for the ideas and advice though, it is giving me some good direction to pursue. |
