Also, we are creating 9th level characters for a specific module.

I can only use classes from the PHB and PrCs from the DMG. So Ranger/Rogue seemed like a decent choice. I wanted to take more ranger levels early to get BAB up, but the character will end up as a 7 Ranger, 13 Rogue.

You've got low AC... The blinking will help with that. The invisibility will not once you've attacked, unless you spring attack. You've got low sneak attack, so spring attack is less useful. TWF will help with the 20% miss chance of the blinking.

I'd suggest blinking, but I'm no optimization expert.

I can't remember if there's a property that will negate the ethereal miss chance for your attacks. Ghost touch, or does that only work the other way around?

w/blinking all enemys will always be considered flat footed. Sneak attack city, get the ring and boost that SA through the roof asap.

-i don't think i'd let the guys in my campaign get a perm blink item-

GO with the Blinking ring - I used that once for a 12th level Rogue/Holy Liberator and it was fantastic.

Not only do you get Sneak Attacks nearly ALL the time you gain defense and utility from the ring as well. 50% miss chance on most physical attacks and individually targeted spells, half damage on all area attacks, and can step through solid objects – forget about picking the lock just walk through the door. I focused on TWF and most of the time I was in the lead for damage output.

I would really love to see a Blinking Mineral Warrior TWF Rogue type going head to head with a fighter!

PS - If you need invis get your Wizard to cast on you or use UMD skill

Not the case. All enemies will be denied their dexterity bonus to AC, which is not the same as being flatfooted.

Doesn't stop sneak-attackers, but it is an important difference. I was using an iaijutsu master with a ring of blinking until one of the other party members pointed out that being denied your dex bonus doesn't necessarily mean you're flat footed.

Thanks to everyone who chimed in!!

Ok, blinking it is. I worked the numbers a bit and dropped the following items:

Haversack (not carrying that much as is)
Cloak of Resistance (+1 was really just for Will saves, Fort and Ref are good, but I want MORE DEX!)
Mithrial Chain Shirt (Yeah, it hurt, but I WANT MY DEX!)

This is what I ended up with. I really wanted the +2 DEX, since it helps my hit rolls, init, and skills (not really AC in this case because it's an even split between Dex +4 and +4 armor or Dex +5 and +3 armor.

27K Ring of Blinking
2.31K +1 Shortsword
1.25K Goggles of Minute Seeing
4K Gloves of Dexterity +2
.175 Masterwork Studded Leather
.310 Masterwork Shortsword
.2 Mighty +1 Longbow
.075 Scrolls
.31442 Mundane Equip
.032 Animal Equip (Riding Dog Animal Companion)

My next level will be Rogue 5 so I get to the 3d6 damage.

I took spring attack line so I have the choice of that or toe to toe for the full attack. I like having both options, since I'm not that enamored with archery.

Misc Items:

Traveler's Outfit
Climber's Kit

Quiver of Arrows
-10 Masterwork
-6 Normal
-4 Silver

Pouch, Belt
-Masterwork Thieves Tools
-Mirror, Small Steel
-Chalk
-Signal Whistle
-Sunrod

Backpack
-Flint and Steel
-Torch
-50 Feet of Silk Rope
-Bedroll
-Waterskin
-3 Days Trail Rations
-Magnifying Glass
-Merchant’s Scales

Any suggestions here are welcome too, althought I've only got 270 gold left..

If you are UMD get a slew of low level scrolls. If not, potions.

I've got UMD at 12 and +2 for Decipher Script = +14 for scroll checks.

I've purchased these scrolls:

Pass Without Trace: 50
2 x Expeditious Retreat: 100

Any other suggestions, keeping in mind that I've only got 270 gold left? Some of the zero level scrolls are only 12.5 gold, but most seem lame.

I do not have prices in front of me, but I would think about unusual utility scrolls. Something the mage won't have memorized (or the sorcerer won't have) and that does not have a cleric analogue.

Spider climb
Alter Self
Disguise
Hold Portal
Locate Object

Stuff like that.

No one ever prepares Gust of Wind. For obvious reasons. But someone in a party always *should* carry a scroll of it. Why?

Gust of Wind eliminates Swarms. And Swarms, if you aren't prepared for them, can be a real pain in the ass to kill due to their immunities.

Don't a character himself get a 20% miss chance against others when blinking? And isn't it so that a character can't Sneak Attack if you have more then 1% miss chance vs. an enemy?

Wouldn't that mean that with Ring of Blink, you won't be able to Sneak Attack?

However, a Ring of Improved Blink(for MUCH MUCH more money) makes you able to Sneak Attack at the same time?
Sisyfos

08-12-04, 12:49 PM
Nah... enemy needs to have concealment for the sneak attack not to work. Miss chance from blink comes from the fact that you might go ethereal just the moment when you intend to strike. That does not prohibit you from aiming properly at vital organs like opponents having invisibility or blur prohibit.

Sisyfos

Then it's set. Ring of Blink is probably the best choice.

And the miss-chance can be negated with a ghost-touch weapon. Of course, that goes both ways, but at least you're always getting your sneak attack. Big damage booster, every rogue I've played, and most of the other rogues in parties that I'm in, tend to pick that little combination up if it's available.

Nah, Ghost touch weapon can hit ethereal creatures, but it does not work other way around so it does not negate the miss chance (there was a long discussion about this on the boards).
