Challenge: defeat my modified Hecatoncheires
Rules for those who try:
XP - 190,000xp
Books: Any non Forgotten Realms, no psionics
Class limitation: 2 non prcs, 2 prcs can be used for a total of 4 classes
Items and starting gold: if you create your own items, show most of the steps; you have 76,000,000cp or 7,600,000sp, or 760,000gp, or 76,000pp
Loopholes: Try to refrain from using them, such as the thought bottle loophole, this is only an example, I'm sure there are more
Builds: Be creative and Unique
Rules: 3.5 (of course), I won't try to preach rules on high or any of that
Reason: This is what has to be defeated in my campaign to obtain epic level

The monster (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/monsters/abomination.htm#hecatoncheires) High CR, yes, so please refrain from asking why I'm using it as the guardian guarding the path to epicness.

a minor change to its weapons:
Greatsword +8, Speed; Damage 2d6+28/17-20
Number of attacks double

I bid you all good luck.

Agreed thats why i had to go hunt for the ice assassin cheese. i'm tempted to replace the phanes with three Ha naga for the three level 21 casters. Or i could Simply make three more Hecatoncheires. Four vs one with A me sharing spells through the share spells feature of ice assasin should prove enough to take him down.

Dweomerkeeper is from a FR web enhancement, but it is not necessary. The main "trick" he's abusing is Craft Contingent Spell, which has nothing to do with the Dweomerkeeper. Craft Contingent Spell was originally in a FR supplement book, but was reprinted in Complete Arcane later, so it is legal for your contest.

However, I thought the spells cast from Contingent Spells had to be things that target the creature bearing the Contingent Spell.

The DwK is from the web enhancement of the complete divine. I used it for the supernatural spell feature, that allows the wizard cast wish withouth spending XP :D

However, I thought the spells cast from Contingent Spells had to be things that target the creature bearing the Contingent Spell.
Nope. You can craft a contingent spell of any spell you want.

If you rule that extra spell allows a wizard to take a spell that is not on its class list:

wizard 1/cleric 1/wizard 4/Dweomerkeeper 10/fatespinner 4
int 36(18+2+5+6+5)
feats: empower spell, maximize spell, craft wondrous item, easy metamagic(quicken), extra spell(quill blast), craft rods, quicken spell, assume supernatural ability

precombat buffs:
draconic polymorph into a chronotyryn

cast maximized supernatural quill blast(-12 to his saves)+quicken supernatural limited wish(-7 to his next save)+supernatural wish(-9 on his next save)+quicken finger of death(DC 10+13+7+4=34)

Fort save of the hecatoncheires: 39-12-7-9=+11. He need a 20 to survive :D

If you do, yay

For contingent spell, sadly, it's not "any spell you want"... or... yes it is...

But read the description of Contingent spells in complete arcane... It takes effect on the "caster"... well the character who has the contingent spell...
Or is centered on him

You can have damage spells as a contingency... it's just stupid... or... say...
Contingent spell "finger of death" + Contingent spell "disintegrate"

Trigger : torture begins... :(

Fnord - I'm just gonna pull at straws here, but the invisibility trick won't really work all that well, here's why:

All abominations have the spell-like ability to use true seeing at will. Abominations are not subject to death from massive damage, and they have maximum hit points per Hit Die. Abominations have the blindsight extraordinary ability to a range of 500 feet.

Do the duplications have his magical swords if it does work?

Nightspirit - where can a chronotyryn be found, out of simple curiosity.

Now, these are assuming that you know where the monster is, correct?
I know you can probably do the level 4 artificer trick presented by LoP and how he dealt with pun-pun, but how would you (without using the LoP trick(s)) find the monster in the first place...

yes he is the monster you have to defeat to go into epic, but he isn't going to be running around or isn't necessarily locked up. Abominations are under a nondetection spell, though not sure how effective it will be on the boards.

But also remember, he can summon another monster of his same type (though without the magical swords).

Here's how I'd defeat my own creation with one spell and flight, then the creatures abilities.. I wonder if this would work anyway:

Elven Wizard 20
Spell: Shapechange (Phane)

Greater Invisibility, summon past duplicate (whatever you killed under 25HD),then using time leach and stasis touch on 100 creatures with really long life spans (if its possible) healing himself of 2,000hp per round, then go fight the monster?

so, what does everyone think of this simple way or is it too much?
Llochlyn

12-04-05, 07:53 PM
well, is healing 2000hp per round equal to 'having 2000 hp over your normal HP"...

And it's not too much it the trick works... at least not on the optimization boards

They do have true seeing, but unlike See Invisibility, True Seeing only works out to 120 ft, which is why I stayed well away from the Hecatoncheires throughout the process. It could search me out with relative ease, given time, but once the Mirror duplicates it, it should be pretty busy.

Do the duplications have his magical swords if it does work?
According to the SRD, yes.

The duplicate has all the possessions and powers of its original (including magic).
I love the Mirror of Opposition :D.

But also remember, he can summon another monster of his same type (though without the magical swords).
The duplicates can use Summon Hecatoncheires, too. No problem.

Ah. THIS is a problem.
It doesn't specify the caster level for nondetection, so it would be equal to the hitdice 52. To scry him out, you need to make a DC 67 caster level check. Hmm.
If the stupid UMD staff trick works, this is easy. Otherwise, Eternal Wand of Scrying, as as caster level 47, from the bard list: 115,620 gp market price.
For my artificer, that works out as:
43,358 gp + 2000 craft reserve + 1469 xp.
Assuming I advance to 16th level.
Each day, use Metamagic Item:Twin and Metamagic Item: Repeat on the wand, and you'll get 6 castings a day. With an average of 400 castings needed to locate the Hecatoncheires, you should manage it in about 66 days. You can reduce the amount of time it takes by blowing xp on Power Surge, but I don't think that's worth it.

Not sure if it works within RAW, but...

Bullywug Hexblade 4/Talon of Tiamat 10/Dragon Disciple 6 --> modified ritual of transformation into pyroclastic dragon (modified being you add racial bonuses like lycanthropes do instead of having yours replaced).

Make sure to have an 18 in Con.

You'd end up with: 54 (+22) ((18 roll + 6 bullywug + 6 pyroclastic + 8 item + 5 (wish) + 5 level)). Using Heighten Breath to bump the breath weapon DC up to 56.

Assuming the enemy is not immune to disinigration, he has to roll a 17 or higher in order to make the saving throw and not be disinigrated.

It's even worse than having your racial modifiers removed, by RAW. You get average stats for your new form.

I don't think a level 20 character can beat a CR 57 encounter without abusable spells or items. In fact, I might go as far as saying that anything that allows a level 20 character to beat a CR 57 must be abusable.

As for core, the Mirror of Opposition works almost as well with a Sorcerer or Wizard as an Artificer. They would need to be higher level, to afford enough CL 47 Wands of Scrying, but a 20th level Sorcerer/Wizard should be able to do it.
thegraveyard

12-04-05, 10:29 PM
I'll look at the SRD later, but with just the book on Shapechange (per the spell) it says the assumed form cannot have more than twice your caster level, and with a 20th level wizard, 36HD is within that limit so the phane idea still works.

as far as the fast healing 2000 per round until the creatures used in this process die of old age, it can get much higher.

on the mirror of opposition, would it make the creatures fight eachother or are they identical in their mental patterns as well? also would the mirror make duplicates of the duplicates?

but the other suggestions and or ideas are good, keep coming up with ways, as far as my build goes, I don't think its too broken using only 2 books, at most 3.

and the monster posted was edited to be a lesser challenge as well from what I was going to originally post, upon request I'll post what the additions and subtractions I made when viewing the creature and coming up with a way to really make an epic struggle against the creature since with its divine rank 0 with the original build, it was harder to defeat.

The duplicate immediately attacks.
If a creature sees its reflection in the mirror’s surface, an exact duplicate of that creature comes into being. This opposite immediately attacks the original.

The Mirror could, in theory, make duplicates of the duplicates, but that could be avoided by ensuring that it aways faces the original.

as for the shape change issue you can only shapechange into creatures of up to 25 HD and one HD per caster level. they nerfed it in the erratta. its still considered a powerful spell though. I stumbled upon this issue when I came across the malaugrym from the Monsters of faerun book and discovered a level 5 character could change into one.

Facing is generally considered to be in the direction of the last movement. unless otherwise specified (like steping backwards.) So normally the 50 heads would be looking front at its target.

Keep the MIRROR facing only the orginal Hecatoncheires. I could also use TK on a cloth to cover it, if need be; I have a lot more weight I can carry. Probably be wise to include a bunch of ordinary mirrors, too, as decoys.

The chronotyryn is from Fiend Folio.

No problems at all:

feats: empower spell, energy admixture(acid), maximize spell, quicken spell, craft wondrous item, craft rods, energy substitution(acid), easy metamagic(admixture)

precombat buffs:
imbue familiar with spell ability: maximized(rod), admixtured, empower orb of acid(average: 232 damage)
limited wish to copy divine power/share it with familiar
shapechange into a chronotyryn
cast two quickened maximized, admixtured, empower orb of acid+two maximized admixtured empowered orb of acid, change form into a chocker: maximized admixtured orb of acid

average: 1340 damage, change form into a Titan, CDG.

THIS can be a problem.

the best thing I can think of is cast Gate and call for him, then teleport away. Cast discern location, and teleport again to him, win the initiative roll, kill him :D

If he summon another hecatoncheires it would be a real problem.

Antoher way:
venerable grey elf cleric 1/wizard 5/Dwk 10/fatespinner 4
feats: extend spell, craft wondrous item, spell focus(necro), greater spell focus(necro),

cast summon monster IX to summon a white ethergaunt. Order him to fail his next save, and cast extended supernatural power leech, to drain his int. Cast limited wish to copy a restoration when his int score drop to 1. With a CL of 21, you can drain up to 42 point. You're int score will be: 33(18+2+5+5+3)+42=75(+32)

find the hecatoncheires: win the initiative, cast supernatural wail of the banshee, DC: 10+32+9+2(spell focus, greater spell focus)+2(soul in larval form)+4(fatespinner): 59

he(they) need a 20 on the save(s), or die

A Hecatoncheires can't travel planes, so all you need is Reverse Gravity + Gate to the Positive Energy plane and watch it explode from the awesomeness.

1) Win initiative. Hecatoncheires have +10 Initiative bonus. Shapechange into a Will O Wisp with a +6 Dex item gives a +12, Improved Init +4, Blooded +2, other +init feats if you're worried. Also if you're a Wu Jen you can reroll initiative as well.

2) Using a 170k greater metamagic rod of Quicken Spell, quicken a gate, reverse gravity; wave bye bye with your move action.

I'm curious as to how you plan on using reverse gravity a spell that causes something to fly upwards, to launch a Hecatoncheires through a vertical gate that requires horizontal movement to go through.
OGS-Remix

12-05-05, 04:58 PM
The gate itself is a circular hoop or disk from 5 to 20 feet in diameter (caster’s choice), oriented in the direction you desire when it comes into existence (typically vertical and facing you). It is a two-dimensional window looking into the plane you specified when casting the spell, and anyone or anything that moves through is shunted instantly to the other side.

Bolded is important part. And yes, a Hecatoncheires would fit, it is only a Huge creature, taking up 15 ft.
Lokiyn

12-05-05, 05:43 PM
Facinating, i think read to much wheel of time over the break. i had totaly forgotten that line.

However Correct me if i'm wrong but doesn't this line cause you a bit of problems then

Provided it has something to hold onto, a creature caught in the area can attempt a Reflex save to secure itself when the spell strikes. Creatures who can fly or levitate can keep themselves from falling.
OGS-Remix

12-05-05, 06:01 PM
That could cause some problems, but you could go to a place where there is nothing for the Hecatoncheires to grab onto as it's falling. It also can't fly as well.

If you Shapechange into a Chronotryn? or Choker, and get extra actions, you can spend 1 standard to gate in, 1 standard to cast reverse gravity, 1 quickened gate.

Something else to keep in mind is its SR 70. That is a bit of a prob for the Wail of the Banshee idea, as well as the Disintegrate.

Hopefully you all can get these ideas off before it can act, because it can seriously hurt you. However, it isn't as potent against a medium sized target, as it can only use 15 attacks on them. Of course, this is still huge damage, but some of the buffing spells can make this survivable. I guess that is actually 30 attacks, isn't it? Just remembered the Speed on all of its weapons.

While it can use true seeing at will, it also has blindsight out to 500 ft. That really limits any invisibilty you use, as that negates it. With its 100 ft move, you would have to stay really far away.

One thing you all seem to be missing, is that this isn't a lone guy trying to kill this thing, it is a group. So, consider you probably have 4 characters for this, not just one.

Cheers.

I think you're the first one who thought along these lines...
But also with this, I think its also prideful and be a greatway
to start an epic adventure by saying I killed "so and so" by
myself, and by doing it alone you can be greedy as well.
just my opinion on this point though.

as for the rest of you, very good ideas thus far, so keep on posting and finding creative ways to kill it.. and as far as facing goes, how would you keep 49 heads from not constantly being vigiliant and looking around for other targets, at least one has to see the mirror...

*shrugs*

I'm just kind of surprised as none have used a frenzied berserker yet, after all it can take punishment for a few rounds... just need one cleric after it all to true res him... so a party of 3 barbarian (berserkers) with 4 cohorts following the same build, would this be enough to kill the monster in the long run unless the monster uses its superior reach and flight?

You know, for some reason I like the idea of the mirror activating for the clones.... Picture it, the magical mirror floats towards the creature, and poof! another one pops up and attacks. Next round, 2 more appear, as both the original and the clone spot the mirror. Next round 4 more appear....etc....

Eventually, you'll reach some form of critical mass, the planet will go nova. Congratulations, you've just accidentally created armageddon; How do you feel?
