I was looking in the DMG for the rules on crafting traps and saw that a DC 25 gets you up to a CR 6 trap. Thats a pretty beefy trap for damage and attacking capabilities. And I was thinking it'd be pretty sweet to have a 3rd level wizard team up with another character to be a chariot driver or something and have a turreted weapon on a wagon

A CR 3 trap gets you...
6d6 damage
+14 ranged attack
+500gp if you want it to auto reload
-100gp for a touch trigger (you will be the one triggering it so duh...)
thats only a DC 20

(envisons a band on gnomish experts kicking butt in their mechanical war machines against giants)

I want arcane disciple chaos domain to get animate objects,

Make war machines that I keep shrunk down once I get 3rd level spells, eventually cast animate objects and PAO to ride around inside really large iron golems shooting mechanical death traps by the dozens with the summon unseen servant swarm spell. hehehehehe expensive and time intensive for crafting but just take leadership with a home base full of craftsmen.

I think I may have to really make a craftsman character with no magic...... but a magic casting cohort to repair and reload my machines.

LOL. I like. Kobolds are definately perfect for this thanks to the racial skill bonus they get on crafing traps.

+2 racial trap making. Finally something that would ::shudder:: make kobolds strong?

And A kobold half dragon sorcerer trapmaker with craft wonderous and arcane disciple chaos would actually be quite amazing. Heck go with battle sorcerer just for kicks. create statues with mechanical damage traps for the fists and then animate them to attack foes for animated objects with FAR better combat abilities. Hardening cast beforehand is a huge powerup. and create magical traps to attach to these monstrossities. And since they aren't really creatures deanimate them and cast shrink item to store them away.

Behold what a little fabricate and a wall of iron can do.....

Make an iron statue with 1 of this trap in each "fist"

Using a harpoon like tip as per the Arms and equipment guide for the weapon type.

Harpoon Spike Trap CR 10
+24 to attack +2 CR
Touch Attack +1CR
49 Average damage +7 CR
-100 gp touch trigger
+800 gp +8 str bonus to damage
+500 gp Auto reload
x20 over all cost auto reload
Target hit by harpoon tip reflex DC = 10+damage delt or become stuck on the spear take exit wound damage equal to initial damage as barbs are pulled free when spike resets

you could reduce the damage to +6 CR (42) and have 10' spikes that stab through 2 people and affect 2 squares in a row

=24,000gp
But with access to all materials for free it costs you nothing
and with fabricate you create it in about 10 minutes
DC 30 craft check (just get a scroll of moment of precience at lower levels)

According to the item creation guidelines, you could get a single-use item of Craft (traps) +39 for 1,251 gp.

Personally, I think you're all being foolish.

A touch-triggered trap hits THE PERSON WHO TOUCHES IT!

Now you could probably get away with an alarm proximity trap that excludes you and your buddies, and you could also use a trap triggered with arcane eye or the like. You're likely to need a wizard to make such a thing though.

Well in the case of the traps being loaded into the fists it is being triggered when the creature touches it, right when the statue fist contacts their body the pressure plate compresses and the trap springs...? whats the issue?

And whats so in concievable of viewing a touch triggered trap to work like a crossbow or gun with a trigger? Makes sense to me.

My Harluaan Scropion fish battle ship will EAT YOU!!!!!!!!! :D

and you will die when attacked by my scorpion flamethrower creatures.

:bump: :w00t: So, can anyone help me get a really high craft trap making skill?

Things I can think of are

Master work tools +2
A homculus familiar helping out +2
Knowledge trap making +2 synnergy?
kobold +2
at level 3 = 13+Int mod
Hireing people for aid another +2 per trained laborer

Is there an arcane weild skill?
Are there ways to reduce crafting time? Anyone know where the rules are for anything like that?

AFAIK, there's no way to make wieldskill arcane, your best bet would be an item to add a compotence bonus to skill checks or something. Or make your cohort a cleric of gond, or make one of your lesser followers a cleric of gond... It only takes a 1st level character to cast the spell.

If you took an item creation feat, which I know is tough as you're wanting to make your main character non-magical, then Exceptional Artisan (from teh Ebberon Campaign Setting) allows you to reduce the time needed to craft any item by 25%. Although it's probably meant for magic items, it has no restriction to magical items only.

I'd say that the Artificer class is the ideal class for making trap-monkeys, but if you want to go nonmagical then that's fine too. What base class were you going to be using?

Eberron does add some oddities to the mix. The House Cannith dragonmark gives a +2 to craft skills, for one.

Alternately, if you're a warforged, you do not need to eat or sleep and are immune to fatigue; some have suggested they should be able to craft items 3 times faster than humanoids, since a "day" of crafting is considered 8 hours of work. I think there's also some kind of enchanted forge in Races of Stone that grants this benefit to the user.

Oh, and when adding up bonuses, don't forget the good old skill focus feat. :D

Oh yes: Get a 1st level Marshal follower (MiniHB) with Inspire Intelligence to add his cha mod to all intelligence checks and intelligence-based skill checks within the area... Should be at-least a +2 bonus and he can work with everybody else to add his own +2 as a trained laborer.

Also: If you're looking for a nonmagical class to oversee a vast workforce, marshal could work well even if it's just for a dip.

seems like a warforged artificer going without sleep would work best for crafting times but I like the idea of finally using a kobold for something.

Are there any rules for creating your own golem anywhere? and would there be a way to transfer your soul into it perminantly? Kind of thinking greenstar adept but paying for crafting the body rather than taking levels? cause then I'd start out as a kobold artificer that eventually turns himself into a golem...

+2 racial
+2 skill focus
+5 competence bonus item
+2 Master work tools
+2 A homculus familiar helping out
+2 Knowledge trap making synnergy bonus
+5 ranks at level 3
+4 Int bonus

=+24
you can craft CR 6 traps by 3rd level if you can get the supplies and have the time

creating gloves of fabrication would be a must for this guy cutting construction times down dramatically or using the spell to build things in minutes. With an item to make walls (ingots of iron) this little kobold could fortify any position in a days time.

Craft a staff of animate objects, fabricate, major creation, wall of stone and wall of iron and eschew materials. Build magical traps into your war machines and have them fly around like mini harluaan sly ships with that new 4th level levitation spell from shining south.

Another choice with LA is the Urindar (spelling?) dwarves with their nifty shape metal ability.

Has anyone seen a nifty PrC anywhere that would compliment this at all?
Possibly work into an illusionist build where I disguise real creation within fake ones?

Any cool ideas out there?
