| MindWyrm03-19-06, 11:30 PM | There have been a number of threads over the past several months that lay out numerous variations on a warlock / cleric / true necromancer build. These all hinge on the character in question being a spellstitched undead (necropolitan seems to be the preferred option) and having control undead as one of the stitched-in spells (thus satisfying the prereq for the TN PrC that the character be able to cast control undead as an arcane spell). Interesting notion, but I have two questions: 1. Can spellstitched creatures actually cast spells? On page 161 of Complete Arcane, we read that spellstitched creatures "gain the ability to cast spells." However, on page 162, this is described as imbuing the creature with "spell-like abilites" (Although WoT is inconsistent in this same paragraph in terms of describing the use of this ability as "casting spells" and "using a spell-like ability"). Can an SLA even grant the ability to actually cast a spell? 2. Failing the above, can an SLA that duplicates a spell be used to qualify for a PrC? Okay, I guess there are technically three questions in there. I look forward to answers from any rules gurus out there. Citations to official WoT rulings are always welcome, as is good, well-reasoned and well-articulated (if not well-documented) logic. |

Yah, started that whole thing a long time ago, so sorry for your confusion. Here's what I found out: 1) Spell-stitched creature gains spell-like abilities, not spells, as far as I can remember, the template doesn't give any spells or the ability to cast them. 2) Yes, a SLA that duplicates a spell CAN be used to qualify for a PrC, this is detailed in the...hmm....DMG, MM, or SS(Can't remember, it's been awhile.) Can't remember for sure, I'll flip through the books tomorrow when I get the chance. Hope that helps. |

| NoldorForce03-20-06, 01:10 AM | I believe this was one of the few (if only) reasons to take one of the spell-like ability feats (the ones that granted three 0th or 1st-level SLAs) from Complete Arcane. |

Actually it's in the Complete Arcane, on page 72. It mentions that spell-like abilities are sufficient to fulfill specific spell requirements (e.g. "ability to cast control undead", "ability to cast a 2nd-level spell") and caster level requirements (e.g. "caster level 3rd") but not generic spellcasting requirements (e.g. "ability to cast 2nd-level spells). :) |

Was looking all over for that. :) |
