| mregecko01-23-07, 04:12 PM | [re-posted from Classes & prc's forums, upon someone's recommendation] I'm trying to come up with a mage-hunter type character for a Living Greyhawk campaign. The character will be able to use magic, but only to enhance melee or to negatively affect casters. Please give me any ideas or suggestions for this build! This is what I have so far... Feats I'm taking in (), abilities in []. Fighter 1 (W. Focus Short Sword, TWF, Lightning Reflexes) Hxb 1 Hxb 2 [Arcane Resistance] (Improved Init) Hxb 3 [Mettle] Monk1 Monk2 [Evasion] (Dive for Cover -- gives an extra reflex save if you fail first, end up prone) Hxb 4 DragonDisc 1 DragonDisc 2 (Point Blank Shot) Occ. Slayer 1 [+1 saves vs. magic] Occ. Slayer 2 [Spell turning 1/day] DragonDisc 3 DragonDisc 4 In the end, It'll net me: Almost full BAB, Evasion, Mettle, +Cha bonus on magic saves, +1 bonus on magic saves, Turn 1spell/day as per Spell Turning, +2AC, +4Str, 2d8 breath weapon, some other stuff. My saves will be +10/+10/+13 by 13th level (base), with +4 on all saves vs. spells (+3 CHA bonus, use with mettle/evasion), and two reflex rolls for evasion (from Dive for Cover). Without dipping into a prc with SR (I think there are some?), I think that pretty much makes me as strong vs. magic as I can be. I also like the spell turning 1/day... I'll have a few Hexblade spells, but nothing of note. I'm dual-wielding short swords, and will probably take some archery feats. Suggestions? LG is a long-progression game, so I'm trying to keep this useful at every level without saying "Wait until I get to level 13! I'll kick your butt!" -- Gecko |

Take a look at the Mage Killer link in my signature. Alot of that stuff should be useable in Living Greyhawk. The defensive capabilities of your build seem good, but you're not exactly that threatening to someone who can fly, summon terrors from the abyss, and stick you in a Forcecage. I would say get rid of the two-weapon fighting stuff (and Lightning Reflexes, and Point Blank Shot, if possible... I forget your prereqs) and take EWP: Spiked Chain, Combat Reflexes, and Mage Slayer. |

However, one point that I'm trying to keep in mind (it's new for me) is that this is for LG... All of the encounters are standardized, and while difficult, they aren't typically designed with the "Screw the PC's over as hard as possible" theme in mind. Thus, I'm not sure the true, planned terrors of a wizard will come into play.... I.e. if I have to worry about being stuck in a forcecage with a pit fiend. This is my first Living Greyhawk character though, so I could be wrong... I figured I'd opt for something strongly defensive, but capable of throwing around some damage when it boils down to melee. Your point is 100% accurate, but doesn't it apply to most melee classes? Rogues, Fighters, Paladins, etc... WTF -CAN- you do when a mage flies 400ft up and fireballs you from above? That said, I'm definitely liking some of the stuff in your mage killer thread, and am taking it to heart. Unfortunately, "Mage Slayer" feat is banned in Living Greyhawk... That hurts. -- Gecko |

WTF -CAN- you do when a mage flies 400ft up and fireballs you from above?Alot of stuff, actually. Is the Sun School feat allowed? If so, get at least one Cape of the Montebank, and something that lets you fly (or at least levitate). You could also work towards the 6th level of Horizon Walker like some of the builds in that Mage Slayer thread do, but that takes a while. |
