I was just wondering. Are the Formian's responsible for the loss of this layer to Mechanus or is it ther harmonium? Have the factions been wiped out in 3rd ed and therefore history changed? I would much prefer the harmonium to be responsible but I want some 3rd ed updates on them

I was just wondering. Are the Formian's responsible for the loss of this layer to MechanusAs I recall from the planar handbook, the shift occured because of the attitudes of the people there (i.e. they started believing they were perfect).

It was the actions of the Harmonium that ultimately tipped the balance and sent the layer into Mechanus. Early 3e material doesn't mention the Harmonium because they were restricted in using references to material not overtly explained in the same book or already present in one of the "core" books, thus the Formians are alluded to being responsible. However more recent material (such as the BoED) has referenced the Harmonium and their role in the event, and as for the formians, despite the fact that their tales of the slide might be conveniantly revisionist, suffice to say they were simply along for the ride and have suffered in mindset in the aftermath.

The factions are still around (except for those obliterated/changed/merged after the Faction War), and they're referenced in 3e in the Manual of the Planes, Planar Handbook, Fiendish Codex I, and numerous times in Dragon magazine. They might have been glossed over early in 3e, but they haven't been subject to any retcons.

Basically, the Harmonium faction took a bunch of people to the 3rd layer to "convince" them to become LG, but their methods tended more towards the evil end of the alignment spectrum, so the entire layer shifted.
