Congratulations, no healing god!

I'm not sarcastic, I think that good gods can give the power to heal, you don't need a "healer god".

I like it. Especially Illuvia. Goddess of the stars is cool.

I expected the 5th deity to be Chaotic Neutral.

I was wrong. Which was cool.

It wasn't predicatable.

Congratulations, no healing god!

There is a good healer god. I based him off of Pelor, which is obvious. I felt, though, that Pelor is overused and part of the generic pantheon. Griasolus represents the good aspects of the sun and tries to heal the world of the evils that his twin brother Wythdar, who represents the negative aspects of the sun, brings to the world.

I like it. Especially Illuvia. Goddess of the stars is cool.

Illuvia is one of my favorites I really like her name. Her husband also has one of my favorite names. The culture I originally made this pantheon for was a more seafaring/island culture than a farming one. I used Celtic/Gaelic/English words and mixed them together to get the results. There aren't a lot of Chaotic Neutral deities in the pantheon same with Lawful Good, there will probably be one of each.

If there is a blank for symbol or favored weapon that means I haven't thought of one so I'm all ears for any suggestions.

Hey - these are really cool and obviously full of complex detail for plot angle, which is great. The only question I have is why with such complex deities do you have a "Patron of Merchants" - just appears a little out of place to me.

Then again we haven't seen the lesser gods and demi-gods as yet?

Well I figured that any society would have at least some mercantile deity of some sort. The difference with Danath is that as a God of cities also he is more toward earning money in order to enjoy the society and culture of a city. A city is where you can find any kind of entertainment and enjoy yourself in anyway. Earning money and becoming affluent is just a means to enjoy what a city has to offer you and to enjoy life as well.

Perhaps you may consider bending the portfolio a little and show his origins as being derived in protecting the divine rights of the nobility which has grown and expanded into the protectorate of the city (as many socities have their roots in the city-state model).

From there the populace may evolve as a society with more subtleties to the social order with people of afluence verating him, and as with any great city - the merchants are the people of afluence.

Hey, did I just do all the work ?!?!?!?!?!

Hey, anyway these are just some thoughts - hope they are useful.

I like it. So he started as a god of nobles and maybe cities too but later changed to include more people and in that way became the more mercantile deity he is today. It is funny that this deity is based of my friend Danny, who lives near and is in love with NYC hence the portfolios.

Maybe if i can get some college work done today I will try posting up the last deities of the pantheon.

You can also make deities based on your players, with that I mean their needs. For example, if you'll have half-orcs, half-elves, tieflings, genasi, aasimar or something, but more than one, you could say that a Half-Breed/bloodline god/dess would be nice to have.

In our campaign, my gf has a female elf that crossdresses, we have a male human that crossdresses... we could have a God of Spies/trickery/disguise that doesn't have rogues/thieves in its portfolio, and he'd be a pretty important god because yearly, there'd be huuuge carnivals in his honor... If you're already making a pantheon, a customized pantheon would give it a much more personal feeling to your players, no?

I'll keep that in mind if I ever want to expand the pantheon. To be fair, this started with no campaign setting in mind and just for fun. Eventually I had wanted to make my own setting, and there is some things on other word documents or in my head about it, bu I doubt that will ever see the light of day. My friend started a two shot (one shot that ended early because we wanted to watch Tin Man) and i felt the pantheon I was working on could work for that setting. So here it is. I'll post the lesser gods tomorrow.

And, again, If there are any blanks for symbols, favored weapons, or even divine realms I am open to suggestions. Any other suggestions, comments, and criticism is also welcome.

the only things I could suggest for more development would be to target some specifics with the lesser and demi-gods. Maybe areas such as spirits of nature, guardian of the dead, a hidden god who protects the secets of the universe, emotions, chaos, war, an oracle or even a mortal god (home plane the material plane, but is immortal in the sense of aging).

a couple ideas.

And now for the lesser deities. If there are any questions about why I have them or what their story is about why they have certain portfoliios i will answer to the best of my ability:

Finally, I have one that I don't know whether to make the 5th Lesser deity or a demigod:

Cagarrin
The Mariner, The Great Shipwright, Protector of the Fleet
? Deity
Symbol: A Golden Ship in a Cerulean Circle

Other than one more deity I am currently creating that would be Lawful Good and the 5th Intermediate Power this is all I have. I hope it meets with approval, though what I have has already met with some.

just having a look at these deities as a total package, and as i stated previously the level of subtle complexity contained by each is great. My only critique now is i note the alignment balance is neutral and evil oriented with 5 good deity, 4 evil deity and 6 neutral deity.

are you happy with how this would offset the development and culture of their world ?

maybe a couple emergent gods, demigods of good, to commence a balancing of the universe, or a hidden deific subplot, or some gods of good were "killed" off in the past - or a combination of these and more.

this balance may be intentional to support a particular theme or campaign direction in which case it would make for interesting play.

a couple thoughts for you.
GoukaRyuu

12-09-07, 10:19 PM
Well I didn't plan on that. When i made my deities for the most part I felt it would be more realistic in a sense to have deities that could be worshipped by multiple groups, for npcs, or classes, which I think I've accomplished. I think also I was trying to get the usual realistic staples of pantheons and gave them alignments that best suited their portfolios. I had no actual ulterior motive so this is kind of humorous.

Maybe some more gods including demigods, whether they be ascended mortals or just weaker gods, could help to balance things out. Though, I maybe should hash out each of the deities I have before deciding if that option is necessary, especially Leimial who I created on the fly. Unfortunately, I have school work to think about right now. So I will try to brainstorm here on some ideas in a day or two.

Again, thanks for the comments. They are helping very much.

a couple of demigods would do it, to provide the element of hope / opportunity to society, not necessarally for a power balance. Thinking about it the general mix may provide a harder element to play and create some vulnerability within players?

a twist on the thoughts.

I congratulate you on your choice for the pleasure deity. Usually anything that has to do with pleasure is CG (e.g. Sune, Sharess) or CE (e.g. Graz'zt, Malcanthet), with only a few exceptions (e.g. Belial/Fierna, LE) wether it'd be just as possible for they to be CN.

About balance, you could have one evil deity that would be more powerful than any other individual deity, thus compensating the sheer numbers, having balance in the end.

That is an idea I had been working with a little and am still trying to develop. There are two stories as to how Virin's hand had gotten stabbed and there really is no way to know which is true. Some stories say that Virin stabbed his own hand, I'll go into the whole story later, and due to the nature of his wound, it has never fully healed, he is not as powerful as he could be, he should be equal to his brothers Sirith and Ennarrion as another greater deity.
The other view on the story is that Ennarrion was trying to stab Virin, who was stabbed in the hand while trying to defend himself. While being stabbed Ennarrion stole some of Virin's power, making Ennarrion a really strong deity (I see him as DR 19) while Virin is a lesser deity.

I'm still working on it. I don't think Ennarrion's actions fit given his portfolios, I think of him as a Magnificent Bastard like Lionel and Lex Luthor from Smallville.

Here is more detailed information on Illuvia, one of my favorite deities out of this pantheon. Any critiques, comments, or questions would be greatly appreciated. And, admittedly, while the general information on my deities can offer complexity I have a hard time creating complex back stories so any suggestions to fix this or help me flesh it out are also appreciated:

Illuvia (Ill-ew-v-ah) is a very popular deity. She is the goddess that brought light into the world, through the moons and the cursed sun that are each represented by one of her children. She is also the goddess that represents pure goodness. She appears as a beautiful maiden, human most of the time but she has been known to appear as an elf. Illuvia has incredibly light, blond hair that is said to shine like the stars she created. Her pale white skin is also said to lightly glow with a soothing light. When appearing to people on the material plane she always looks like a woman in her late twenties or early thirties. She is usually seen in robes of silver. With her looks and her clothes she truly looks like the embodiment of light and stars.

Dogma
As the goddess of light her goal is to bring light to the darkness of the world. People need to strive for goodness, being better people to themselves and one another. Evil that seeks to destroy the world or bring darkness into it, especially those who gladly worship the evil deities, must be stopped and should be fought against at any chance. By eliminating the darkness of evil and bringing in the light of good the world can become a happy utopian place.

Illuvia stands against Bhravunn and Ennarrion at every turn and her clerics main opponents are usually of these faiths. Her opinions on Wythdar and Nathus are much different, however. Nathus is her brother and Wythdar her son. They originally were not evil; the great corrupter Ennarrion seduced them. Any member of the church who kills a worshipper of either of the two outright has done a great sacrilege. Illuvia hopes to convert these followers to the side of good, it is hoped that if enough worshippers of Nathus and Wythdar become good they will turn from their evil ways.

In spreading light to the world, Illuvia approves of followers who sail the seas, sometimes in to the unknown, to fight evil and spread light. It is only through navigation, sometimes through the unknown, that sailing the seas is possible. Navigation first begun using her stars and that is why navigation has become one of her areas of concern.

Clerics and Temples
Many temples for Illuvia exist, in some rare occasions she shares a temple with her husband Virin or rarer still shares a temple with both her husband and their children. Her temples are usually constructed of marble preferably or any other white construction grade stone if marble is unavailable. Silver and diamonds are used for decoration in the bigger more opulent temples found in the biggest cities. Temples generally have a large open courtyard that, weather permitting, is used to pray to Illuvia under the stars themselves. Though there are areas of prayer in the temple incase of weather, these areas are smaller and it is preferable to worship under Illuvia’s stars. There are many windows placed in the walls so that during the day a lot of sunlight is able to filter into all the rooms of the temple. Overall, the temples are light, nearly blindingly so, but not overly large, except in the biggest cities. They are shaped like a square with a large courtyard in the middle.

There are a few holidays that are followed in Illuvia’s Church. The rarest of her holidays are the Night of Orbs and the Night of Darkness. These events happen only every few centuries when all the moons are in the full or new parts of their cycle respectively and all at the same time. The Night of Orbs is a happy celebration synonymous with the creation of light and the stars and the birth of Illuvia’s children. The Night of Darkness represents the nights Ennarrion corrupted Nathus and Wythdar and how on the events of both those nights such chaos occurred that her other children were too scared to cross the sky. Any child born during either night has an omen on them and will usually have a very important future. Other smaller holidays are celebrated on the solstices and equinoxes and when meteor showers or comets occur.

Clerics of Illuvia are easy to spot; they wear silver robes with the symbol of Illuvia on the front. Clerics of Illuvia pray and receive their spells at any time of night and under the night sky if ever possible. The most preferred time of prayer is when the stars are first coming out at dusk.

Clerics and paladins of Illuvia as well as good fighters that worship her adventure to bring good in the world and fight evil at every turn or in other words bring light to the darkness.

I like it, i think you've put some real depth of thought into these deities. There are a couple things I'd like to run by you, regarding Illuvia portfolio, considering the background you just added, do you think Hope and Ideals may be appropriate to include?

Also, her Paladins and Divine Champions ect, what about naming them the "Light Bringers"?

Last one, this is an idea twist that came to me while reading the profile, what say one of her worshippers gives birth during the Night of Darkness period is so greived by the event and sacrifices / kills the child, Illuvia enraged at the cowardice and "sacrelige" in her name curses them, to wander the world undead (read Banshee) forever or until redeemed by the soul of the sacrificed child (which may transfer to a player when born - blah blah - finds out later in life ect ect - adventure hook). This may also potentially explain / be the source of Bnshee in your campaign?

a couple thoughts.
GoukaRyuu

12-14-07, 09:05 AM
I like the addition of hope to her portfolio, but you'd have to explain how ideals would fit. The banshee story is an interesting twist and I'll have to hold on to that. Thank You. Considering your good reaction to Illuvia I'll have to get to work on the others.

I don't know if you picked it up from the summary, but Illuvia has other children, where Griasolus and Wythdar represent the sun she has children who represent the moons. They didn't seem to work really well so I just kept them to the side so far, and as the pantheon works better as one that can be used in any campaign setting with out them mentioned, but they add a few more deities of good, since you commented that good seemed to be lacking earlier, and also add some areas to the pantheon that are not explored.
meigin

12-14-07, 02:40 PM
Noted the extra children (moons), i think it is a god addition. The concept of the cursed sun is also unique, where Illuvia and her loyal children bring out of the darkness (this is where i saw hope, and thought worshippers may dream of ideals through personificiation of the moon deities).

The concept of the celestial light (of goodness) is great, isn't funny however that most people will not grasp the sun as being a part of that, though it is the largest / most visable celestial object. I note that the northern / southern lights haven't ben touched upon, perhaps an area for development if the need arises?

eagerly anticipating future additions.

Since most of this was written up already, and I needed a reason to not study for exams, here is the divine judge Sirith:

Sirith (Sir-ith) is revered for being a neutral judge, for the Gods and for the dead. All pay him respect so that he may judge the souls of loved ones equally after they have departed. Many mortals fear him for the possibility he will judge them to harshly and they will be sent somewhere to suffer for all eternity. The Gods pay him respect because he judges fairly and his judgments are final, at least to all the lawful and neutral deities of the pantheon. It is due to his unbiasedness that the other deities usually come to him to settle arguments and disagreements, when it is between two deities at least that would follow his judgments. Sirith’s natural form is as a young boy in his mid to late teens or an elderly old man. He has silver colored hair, gray eyes, and pale skin regardless of the age he appears as.

Dogma
Sirith feels that all should be treated equally, no matter others’ beliefs when it comes to good vs. evil or order vs. chaos. Everyone should be judged fairly and in an unbiased fashion and all the facts should be known before a ruling is made. Sirith values wisdom and truth, which he feels are the only things that can bring justice.

He also believes that there should always be balance between Good and Evil and Law and Chaos. This makes him look indifferent to the sufferings of the world. Sirith, his avatars, or followers are rarely willing to help any regardless of alignment and will only help when necessary to tip the scales of either spectrum into balance.

His views have also upset many deities of the pantheon since Sirith has helped one side on one occasion and then the other on the next. Other times he abstains and chooses to help neither side. His mortal followers are very much the same.

The only deity that Sirith can be described as having an alliance with is his niece, herald, and co-worker Morsais. He is said to have a soft spot for her considering he raised her. He shares no other alliances so as to remain unbiased when judging the dealing of the others.

Clerics and Temples
There is no organized religion for Sirith. There are however major shrines in any respectable settlement and any mortuary will have a shrine as well. He usually shares these shrines with Morsais, who does not have an organized faith either. Prayers to Sirith are always heard at funerals.

Followers of Sirth, or those who have him as their patron, are usually found working for powers as judges, trusted for their fairness and unbiased decisions, or keepers of knowledge, in Libraries or similar orders or institutions for example. They are also teachers, preaching the virtues of wisdom and knowledge.

Adventurers with Sirth as a patron are likely to be wizards, archivists, or any individual that values knowledge, wisdom, and truth.

Since I think you were interested, here are the other children of Illuvia. On this pantheon's home world the 6 children would be considered Illuvia's children and all Gods of a particular moon, named after themselves. As I had said, the pantheon could be placed on other worlds better without the 6, that is unless they were no longer moon deities or considered children of Illuvia, which makes sense. I tried to fit into these deities the concept of the tripartite deities of the virgin/mother/crone. The other three are their companions and a male equivalent or rather youth/man/elder.

I still don't think these work very well, and probably need to be reworked a lot before the chance of being included is a valid option, but here they are:

Hey, back again, had a few things to do,, you know how it is . . .. . .

Lokking at Sirith, I like it, there's something appealing about a universal judge (of the dead, ajudicator of the deities ect), maybe a divine sub-plot to sway Sirith in one direction in particular could be interesting.

Deities of this portfolio are intrinsically powerful, yet usually quite restrained in action. Often this is interpretted as they being trivial in the scheme of a campaign. Actually turning things on their side, Sirith is the most potentially powerful being, in that he can ennact an edict / judgement upon anyone, mortal or otherwise.

Regarding Illuvia's children the moons, yeah there is some substance missing there, I have to agree. A thought I was having is to consider them as taking on aspects of Illuvia's domains, almost like agents. Interpretting this, if Illuvia is a deity of elven / fey kind, her children may be patrons of particular aspects, such as various elvenkind, or fey races.

what do you think?

Yeah, i know how it is, I was posting instead of studying for exams.

Now to get in to your comments, Sirith is indeed very powerful in a positional sense. The reason he isn't on Good or Evil's side, Law vs. Chaos not being as big of an issue in this pantheon, is due to who his older and younger brothers are, Virin and Ennarrion respectively. On some level he is there to fill in the middle and be a balance between the two. Now, about you judgements on mortals I've been thinking. Sirith does allow Lawful Evil followers, who would be willing to use the idea of receiving visions from Sirith to judge certain individuals and get them out of the way. Of course, this could only be done by clerics and very rarely and is certainly a good plot seed for a character background. Though, as mentioned, Chaotic gods and individuals would probably not really care about Sirith's judgements.

While I like your idea, I made this pantheon with the idea that each culture would have its own, this pantheon is solely human. Still I have decided that not all 6 moon deities are Illuvia's children, two are Virin's and his brother's parents who received their moon portfolios as a gift from their new daughter-in-law after the wedding. The idea of them taking on aspects of her domains and being her agents could still work for the other 4.

It's hard not having a college internet connection, but I will try to work on this more and update it during break.

Things get hard this time of year for everyone.

Long term looking at the other pantheons will be interesting, hope you have the time to develop a long the way.

The utilising children or agents as aspects of the primary deities portfolio is something that I use and appears to work well. In short, each deity has eight domains, each represented by agents who act as particular domain aspects. Normally these are solar or pit fiend types depending on the domain apsect. There are a couple exceptions but otherwise thats how it works (for me).

UPDATE/BUMP

I have started working, finally, on this again. Here is what I have so far for Atharaoth. I am having a hard time coming up with a Lawful Neutral dogma for him so any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Atharaoth’s (Ath-r-oath) concern is and always has been with the sky, along with all the other responsibilities that entails. He is the one that changes the seasons throughout the year as well as the one who controls the winds. Many people pray to Atharaoth for different reasons. These reasons can be for good weather for farming or sailing, though his adopted son Cagarrin is the patron of sailors any sailor would be a fool not to throw a prayer the Wind Lord’s way. Prayers are also sent just so that the seasons continue to change as they always have. When sending important correspondence a sender, and the messenger too, will send a prayer in hopes that the news can be delivered in all swiftness. Atharaoth usually appears as an older but stately man with some wrinkles, his hair and beard as white and wispy as the clouds. He dresses regally in his colors of sky blue and white. Atharaoth holds himself as a king and should be treated as such.

Favored Weapon: Quarterstaff

Also, a question. Does anyone think some of my deities are too domain heavy? If so which ones and which domains do you think I should drop?
