I'll use this in my current campaign. I haven't read any new articles on the codex since the 1st ed as described in the DMG. I based alternate history on the inputs of Shemeska in one of the planar articles (I forgot which one, though I managed to snag some of its contents - History of the Lower Planes, I think). I'll gladly appreciate any inputs, comments, opinions, etc. that can be had regarding this endeavor. Here goes.. The Keepers of Knowledge (Taken from the article) Both sides give their members the task of recording information. The arcanaloths are said to write the only honest histories, seeing how they check and double-check each others' work. Unfortunately, their records, which begin during this period, are all but inaccessible in the Tower Arcane in Gehenna. (This is my addition) It is said that three of the most powerful arcanaloths conceived upon the idea of compiling the accumulated knowledge on the planes. From their numerous agents, these three collected and wrote every bit of information to be had about the planes. Realizing that the knowledge garnered could not be contained easily in ordinary means, the Triad, as they eventually would be known, created an enormous book, which will eventually be known as the Codex of Infinite Planes. With an infinite number of pages to write an infinite amount of information on an infinite number of planes, the codex, became a vast receptacle of knowledge. The Triad imbued the codex with dweomer that will keep nigh indestructible. Throughout the millennia, the tome grew in power as more and more information was placed upon its pages. It was during the time that the Blood War paused a third time, that the Triad made the discovery that can drastically alter the fate of the multiverse forever. Hidden within its pages and encrypted in the information contained therein is the source of an overdeity’s power. The three arcanaloths believed that whoever can decipher the hidden knowledge can unlocked the source of limitless and unrivalled power. Stunned by the discovery and more so by its possible dire consequences, the Triad argued with one another on what to do with the knowledge. One wanted to sell the information to the highest bidder, one wanted to delve deeper into the discovery while the third one wanted to keep it hidden forever, believing that it will cause the end of all there is. And so it was that during the Triads’ bickering that agents of a deity learned of the discovery and conveyed this to its master. And it was thus that the deity Tharizdun came about that knowledge from one of his agents. At last he has found the ultimate key to his goal, destruction of the multiverse. I'm still cooking up the concept at this point while trying to find any possible loopholes in the story above. Experts on the topic above are most welcome on their inputs, with special mention to Shemeska and Ripvanwormer. :) |
