| maddog071403-08-07, 06:38 PM | I'm writing a high level adventure where the PC's (A high level elf and a high level human) are forced to discover Demogorgan's true name in order to use it as a bargaining chip. Once they have it, The elf will be persuaded (A little manipulation and suggestion by the DM, thru NPC's) to go to Arvandor to be prepared to give Demogorgons true name to the Selderine, while the high level human goes to demogorgans plane (Which they have already been to early in the adventure) to bargain for the release of a soul trapped there, and a truce, or else his friend the elf will give out demogorgan's true name to the selderine and whoever else wants it. I'm trying to find out could a elf from the material plane simply go to whatever city the selderine live in and gain an audiance and tell his story? I mean I'm sure he can if the DM says he can, but as the DM, I don't want to make it that easy. Any suggestions? Also, if anyone has any names of the selderines city, or any elven city in arvandor, or how the denizens of the plane would greet an elf outsider? I would appriciate it. Thanks |

Sehanine: But...but Corellon, I'm your- Corellon: Shut up, no your not. (to elf) Sure! Anything else? Elf: Yeah. I want...I pony. But I want it to be a divine pony. And I want it to be the God of Ponies. Epona: No way! Corellon: Shut up Epona: You can't tell me to shut up! I'm not even in your pantheon! I'm a Celt! Corellon: Shut up! This elf's got a god-pony now. And so on. |

| Rogue Shadows03-10-07, 10:55 AM | Basically, if the elf has Demagorgon's Turename, then he can probably just say aloud, "Corellon, I have Demagorgon's Truename." He'll be instantly teleported to Corellon's court and pretty much given anything he wants in return for it. |
| Calmar03-11-07, 04:02 PM | What powers does the true name posess; and how would Corellon check, if he gets the true name and not some other? Imagine, the elf would not have Demogorgon's true name (Montgomery) and told the elven deities, the name was Jaques. ;) |

In technical terms Demogorgon is the most powerful single embodiment of Chaotic evil. If you learn his true name you have power over him, sometimes even in effect control him. Therefore if you can tell any god the truename of an archfiend, be prepared to either get gods giving you anything you want that they can in exchange, or more likely that archfiend pulling out all the stops. As in Demogorgon will shift every demons he has in battle, to hunting those PCs down. Thats millions BTW, Millions upon millions even. All hunting one elf. If he's lucky Demogorgon won't come too. Even assuming they can't get in, Demogorgon is worshipped in a way like a minor god, so all those worshippers will likely either throw off the act, or turn the system on the PCs to serve their master (Maybe even an elf, demogorgon worshipper, up in high ranks turn the city against the PCs. Possibly by declaring them worshippers of demogorgon and the 'truename' will actually summon the prince of demons himself into the city. Anything that makes it so they'll kill the PCs before they can talk.) The human will have died on sight. It's a demon, you don't get truces, you gave a breif space of time where you weren't defending yourself as actively. The only time a demon won't break a truce is because it wrote it, and needed to use it for its own safety. As for checking the name... If it works, the bit where Demogorgon gets bound and captured by magic is a dead giveaway. If the names a dud, it didn't work. And the gods will kill the PC, if he's lucky. |
| Rogue Shadows03-13-07, 09:29 AM | Pretty much, yeah. Good luck to that elf... |
| Treymordin03-13-07, 07:07 PM | That poor wizard. Teleporting to the Abyss by himself and being subjected to the planar effects and getting killed by demons! :noway: Why do you hate this character so?:thinks: |
| maddog071403-18-07, 10:02 AM | I don't think demogorgon would kill the human, because if he did, the elf reveals demogorgans true name to the selderine, and the whole abyss isn't coming after the elf because he's in Arvandor, leaving the name with someone trustworthy to reveal the name in case he or the human is slain, or the friends soul isn't released, someone like say "The srinshee" for example. It would not do Demogorgan any good by killing the human or the elf because he then risks his true name being revealed. |
| Khael03-18-07, 12:46 PM | You've missed the point. Demogorgon will not trust those PCs. This is a demon. What would he do in their situation? Does he have any reason to believe them? If no, the human dies, so Demogorgon now has a bargaining chip: "Tell the Gods my Truename, and your friend's souls will follow me into my oblivion". Second... Demongorgon doesn't need to enter Arvandor. He is worshipped as I said before, it all too likely he'll have a secret worshipper high-up in the city. All it needs is that one worshipper to say, "That elf is a worshipper of Demogorgon and the word he wants to trade will really summon the Prince of demons and his army here!" Result, Elf PC is killed by the elves. What you need to reemmber is this: If demogorgon kills the human or elf, his risks his name being revealed. If he doesn't, that a living mortal with definate power over him. If you were a psycho demon with power rivalling gods would you let someone with that kind of power live, knowing they could bind you anytime they wanted or take the risk and wipe them out now? |
| Segan03-19-07, 10:11 AM | Could it be that Demogorgon's true name are the names of his two mind personalities? |
| Khael03-20-07, 06:37 AM | Doubtful, you have a true name, which is usually secret, so secret most don't even know theirs, and then a given name, such as Demogorgon. Though that does throw up a question... do demogrogn's two heads count as one demon, or two? Their share a body, but have very different personalities, so much so their have their own heads... Not that that matters, find the name of one head/demogorgon, and the body+other heads comes too. |
| Segan03-20-07, 06:49 AM | Well, if it's unknown for anyone but Demogorgon himself that he has a splitted personality with two different names, wouldn't that count as secret? Just from reading this thread, I got the impression, that there's some significance to the term "true name" in relation to Demogorgon and maybe to other special creatures, that is officially stated by DnD books, and not a feature of an individual campaign. And I wanted to know about that... |
| Zalakhiel03-20-07, 08:49 AM | If Demogorgon had two True Names, then an intelligent twelve-headed Hydra would get to have twelve True Names due to an extensive collection of personallities, right? Nah, I think I`ll pass on that... |
| Segan03-20-07, 08:56 AM | Is the true name an official concept integrated somewhere in the DnD books then...? |
| Khael03-20-07, 09:22 AM | Both in 'book of exalted deeds', and 'tome of magic' referance is made to true names (The tome has a class based off it). In effect the true name of a being in-game allows you to teleport it at will by touch, and also (at will again, but from any distance, or plane) lowers its SR, lower its saves, bind it by magic. So in others words if someone has demogorgons truename, they can bind him, totally within the rules, with him getting a reduced saving throw, no SR etc against that binding. |
| Rogue Shadows03-20-07, 10:39 AM | Wizard: I know your Truename, Demagorgon...BOTH of them. Demagorgon: WHAT?! NO YOU DON'T! PROVE IT! Wizard: Left head, I name you Tl'karranash'ket-thel'kleshdor. Demagorgon's left head: Damn... Wizard: And right head, I name you...Stan Demagorgon's right head: *blushes* Demagorgon's left head: Your name is STAN?! Demagorgon's right head: Shut up! At least it can be said in one breath! Wizard: If you don't serve me- Demagorgon's left head: What the Hells kind of Truename is Stan?! Demagorgon's right head: No one asked you! Demagorgon's left head: I can't believe I share a body with you! Demagorgon's right head: Frak you! Wizard: Uh...guys? I'm trying to bind you... If Demogorgon had two True Names, then an intelligent twelve-headed Hydra would get to have twelve True Names due to an extensive collection of personallities, right? Nah, I think I`ll pass on that... Where's it say that hydras have multiple personalities? |
