Archfiends banished from Material Plane for 100 years? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Archfiends (and the Deities) are by far my favorite element of D&D; I try to soak up as much info as I can on them (which usually has me reading these boards for days on end). But, after a while, the boards tend to blend in with the books...

So, that being said. Can anyone tell me where it's said that, when Archfiends are defeated on the material plane, they are no so much killed, as banished from the plane for 100 years? I've seen this convention used numerous times, but I couldn't find anything in Hordes of the Abyss, Tyrants of the 9 Hells, Complete Divine, Defenders of the Faith, or the Book of Vile Darkness that say that specifically.

I found the bit about differences in calling/summoning and such, but just nothing about the Archfiends.

Thanks for any help!

Fiendish Codex I: Hordes of the Abyss, page 66:

"Eventually, Iggwilv faltered in her control, and Graz'zt turned on her. An epic battle ensued, forcing Iggwilv to expend every spell, artifact, and ally she could, and although she managed to banish Graz'zt back to the Abyss, consigning him to a century of imprisonment, she was herself weakened to the point where she was forced to go into hiding."

Fiendish Codex I (p.57)

"A demon lord that is slain is banished to its home layer for 100 years."

Fiendish Codex II (p.141)

"However, if they are slain on another plane, they are banished to their layer for 99 years."

That might explain why Moloch is currently in Avernus. Since he's banished both from Malbolge (the layer he formally ruled) and the Material Plane (since the Apocalypse Stone incident) he's stuck in Avernus by default.

He was formally the servant of Baalzebul, who still likely has some claim over him, but because Moloch got himself banished he's unable to bring him to Maladomini.

Like liches, however, there are (decidedly epic) ways to keep a good fiend down.

Now I am not sure if this will count for you. I didn't find anything yet on Archfiends, but i do have this from an older source. Comes from the old Advanced Dungeons and Dragons Monster Manual by Gary Gygax.
Demons are chaotic and evil; the smarter and stronger rule those of thier kind who are weaker and less inteligent. The less intelligent will attack without question and fight until slain. Demons of type 5 and above are not actually slain when thier material form is killed in combat; thier material form being removed from thier use, the demon in question is therby forced back to the plane from where it orignally came, there to remain until a century has passed or until another aids it to go forth again. However, if demons are encountered on thier own plane, they can be slain. No demon can ever be subdued. All are able to divide thier attacks amongst two or even three oponents if thier means allow.

I hope this helps and if i can i will continue to locate your archfiend.

Just to give you some examples of what Demons are what types. Vrock Type 1, Herzrou Type 2, Glabrezu Type 3, Nalfeshnee Type 4, Marilith Type 5.
Converted from Old to new. So anything pass a Marilith definately can come back after a century enless someone brings it back just to torment you later.
