Hey people, a quick idea I've just had, almost every early religion has a end times, a era when the old gods die and their young take their place, a Ragnarok.
With that in mind, take a pantheon, real or fictional, and in your head make a battle, then list who lives, who dies, who rules and who, um, drools. :P

GREEK
After millions of years holding the sky and the earth apart, Atlas crumbles, causing the mortal world to end.

Hades, without warning, leads a uncountable number of souls and deamons against Zues and throws him from Olympia.

Athena sees her father as weak and slays him, taking the power of storm from him. She then gathers together the gods to reclaimed the Heavens.

Morpheus, god of dreams, covers his father, Hynos, head in cloths as he sleeps and kills him, taking the realm of dreams for his own.

Ares and Athena work together for the first time and create the perfect battle plan.

The battle for Olympia is won by Athena and Hades is slain, but Ares, convinced by his long-time companion Eris, tries to kill Athena for rulership of the gods.

But the titanic Prometheus, tackles him and beats him to death.

The Oneiroi, lead by Morpheus, devour the spirits of men, shaping and rebirth them as creatures without sin or memory.

Prometheus marries Athena and become the new rulers of the gods.

Hera is driven mad by the death of her husband Zues and murders Hermes and many nymphs and deamons. She then takes her own life.

The sons of Poseidon, Triton and Rhode attempt to murder him but are slain themselves, the sea god locks himself within his own domain.

Nike, spirit of victory, takes up the mantle of war goddess.

Hekate, riding Sirius, asks for rulership of the next Underworld and is given it.

Charon rides in his boat away from the gods, with a smile.

There is already an "end of the Olympians" prediction in Greek mythos. If I remember it had to do with a future son of Zeus. Zeus couldn't get the Fates to reveal who it was.

The Forgotten Realms pantheon and setting has an end times as well, its called the Spellplague. The Dark Goddess, Shar, kills Mystra, Mother of All Magic (although it seems Cyric, the Prince of Lies, did the actual dirty deed).

The Weave unravels and Girls Gone Wild, uh, I mean Magic Goes Wild. This "spellplague" is of course, the impetus for the change which will lead the setting into 4th edition. In common parlance, its a Realms Shaking Event which always signals an edition change. Sometimes these events occur in the middle of an edition run just to stir things up, to create excitment for the setting (such as The Threat from the Sea, a novel series, which is the typical "delivery" system for RSEs).

In any case, this most recent cataclysm is even more global, more far-reaching than any of the others, including the Time of Troubles (which signaled the jump into 2nd edition). In my opinion, the Realms have been so significantly altered as to be all but unrecognizable from what they once were. Sounds like the end of times to me ;).

In any case, the setting as it appears in our home games wont be affected by the Spellplague, even as we run 4e rules. The changes between editions for both setting and rules is sweeping, but I can't imagine that converting the Realms will require the implementation of the Spellplague. If it does, well there are always other fantasy RPGs out there. It would be interesting to see the Forgotten Realms using GURPS for instance. Its a bit ambitious (especially for me) but it can be done.

Do you know what Prometheus means? He was the wisest of the Gods.

I've always thought that would be an interesting myth to follow. Zeuse has so far been the only person in the entirety of Greek mythology to avoid his fate.

He didn't actually avoid it. Notice that he's no longer around?

Athena rules, however old Prometheus was often connected to Athena as a possible love interest, besides, at least he's not a sibling like most of the gods get stuck with. :)

Well, erm, I'm not entirely sure he ever was to begin with. ;)

Yes, say that now that he's gone and you don't have to fear his divine wrath! :D

But there's no story to go with his overthrow the way there was with Cronus and Uranus. You'd think the new deity in charge of everything would want bragging rights about it. Of course, if that deity didn't want it widely known he was the son of Zeus, perhaps wanting everyone to believe something else, then I suppose there wouldn't be a story, or it'd be well hidden.

This is great!

I love it when Greek myth is revitalized.

Where does this leave Aphrodite, Hepestos, Hercules, Apollo and Artemis?

Also, would this leave second tier deities like Demeter and Tyche?

Finally, I thought that the Olympian Pantheon required a certain number of individuals. Who would get the nod?

Where does this leave Aphrodite, Hepestos, Hercules, Apollo and Artemisly ?

Probably the same place it left most of the Titans of old..

Also, would this leave second tier deities like Demeter and Tyche?

Maybe in place depending on who sided with who during the struggle.

Finally, I thought that the Olympian Pantheon required a certain number of individuals. Who would get the nod?

No.
