| vaderboy02-15-08, 01:34 AM | I'm creating my own planar system and was thinking about setting it up so that the material plane was a flat disk in the middle and the rest of the planes are part of a single flat disk that surrounds it with opposites on either side. law and chaos would each get half and good and evil will each get half (they would overlap). There would also be another disk above the material plane forming the great neutral. Instead of having a cosmology where there are so many litttle planes I thought that this might be a refreshing change. The chaotic evil area would be like the abyss. the lawful evil are would be like the nine hells. the lawful good area would resemble the seven heavens, and the chaotic good area would be most like ysgard. elemental planes would exist on just floating disks in nothingness. finally the astral, ethereal, and shadow planes would all function as normally. Please give me your ideas i would appreciate any comments on this idea. i would also like to know if any of you have tried this before and how it worked out, Thank you 78% of all DMs start their first campaign in a tavern, if you are one of the 22% that don't copy this and post it in your signature |

I too use but one outer plane that simply has different areas with different alignment traits and in the huge area of chaotic good for example, are several divine realms like countries. Since it's not a physical space but a spiritual, distance and direction inside and between the realms realm are just illusions to mortal perception and so one can simply throw in more and more realms as needed with every shape, size, and traits desired without having to introduce new layers. The realms probably number into the millions so noone ever recorded them all. "Hell" is not a plane but the hypothetical sum of all Lawful Evil realms. The only thing of additional work I can think of is to maybe rewrite the wording of the plane shift spell. I would prefer that characters have to use it to jump between realms, but you might want them to be able to simply walk there once they are in the outer plane. |

Of course, they might not exist in your reality and there might only be Lawful Good, Lawful Evil, Chaotic Good, and Chaotic Evil. If you do want the Neutrals you may want to consider placing the "pure" alignments at various pole points. For example: ......... Law ......... -------------------- Good | Prime | Evil -------------------- .........Chaos......... The realm might then be divided into eights with a True Neutral center region. Though this may be what you already have planned and I'm misreading your message. Also do you plan to have elemental planes? If so you might want to consider placing them along side the Prime - the Plane of Earth, for instance, might coexist along side the Prime's earthen areas, the Plane of Air with the sky and the Plane of Water with the sea while the Plane of Fire might exist slightly below the Prime and be similar to the core on Earth or it might manifest itself in the form of that world's sun. Speaking of which, would there be a normal sun and moon rise or would the sky simply lighten and darken without any source of illumination? |
