2 things have allways bothered me a little about the default DnD planar system regarding the events after death.

1:They seem to provide no incentive towards being evil, infact anyone even a little clued up would know that it is the dumbest theing you could do, yet powerful evil wizards.

2:The total loss of life memories and skills for all, even the greatest ever chamepons of the cause.

That is why I want your opinon on this idea, the Promised.

(I ought to explain at first that rangers, hexblades and warlocks fill the CG, LE and CE rolls of paladins in my world)

The Promised is a general term for those who, after death, can look forward to an almost identical contintinuation of their lives in many ways. All elves, Paladins, Rangers, Hexblades, Warlocks and certain other chosen mortals retain their form and memories after death and are free to go about their busness, to a greater or lesser extent.

They gain the celestial or fiendish template (will need to find a chaos and law template, any ideas?) and the racial subtype of the race of the plane they are headed too. They tend to be integrated where their skill is most required and elves form their own cities on the fringes of the planes. Elves tend to eventualy begin to evolve as the souls of petitioners usually do but still retian memories (making them ideal agents on the surface) but class members and deciples tend only to become unique outsiders (somtimes losing most of the class abilites, somtimes all), and then only if they are very powerfull. Example:

Most Hexblades, level 1-5, simply become part of the fodder forces of Hell, a kind of special reserve force but ultimately not that important. Some, Level 5-15 gain mid-level command or temptation possitions. Only truly powerful hexblades are pormoted and are viewed as starting at the level in the hyerachy that has the closest CR to them.

In my world Bel's personal Leutennant and adjunct is a unique Gargantual eight limbed outsider made, aparently, entirely out of Battorian steel plates and an ex-hexblade. He possess a unique aura of unluck but no other abilites. The witch queen (GAH! NAME!) is rumoured to be an ex-warlock.

Anarchic and axiomatic templates from the Planar Handbook?
