there are gods of dragons and of giants but none of dinosuars. Why is this? Dinosuars can definatly take on many giants and some dragons so even if the uninteligent dinosuars won't worship them I can definetly picture inteligent creatures worshiping a god of dinosuars for pretection from them and to gain dinosuar like qualities.

Please answer my question and submit your dino god.

While that would be quite novel, dinosaurs are animals, and therefore fall under the rule of deities of nature.

However, if there where a deity of nature who was also a dinosaur, I'd so worship it.

In the Forgotten Realms, the Chultan god Ubtao has dinosaurs as one of his protfolios. He's also a god of creation and jungles.

His favored weapon is even a tyrannosaur head (that makes for great spiritual weapon castings), though his followers use a heavy pick.

In Dragon #318 (http://paizo.com/dragon/products/downloads/318&source=rss), there's an article "Children of Ka" about "Lizardfolk druids, dinosaur wizards, and the saurian god they battle to save." Is the "Ka" here the name of that god?
Mirtek

Yes, Ka is a dinosaur deity

It would be impossible to have a god of dinosaurs, as the dinosaurs would not worship it unless there was an intelligent dinosaur (which there isn't). It is conceivable however to have a god that takes the form of a dinosaur however, and though he would not be worshiped by dinosaurs he would still be a dinosaur god, in a sense.

If I can be blunt here, I fail to see why dinosaurs were included in the Monster Manual in the first place. I mean, why would we have dinosaurs in a fantasy story that wasn't Jurassic Park or Dinotopia other than the fact that a few people who had some influence over the decision of what monsters went in thought to themselves "ZOMG! DINOZUARS! TAT'S SO CEWLZORS!"?

What about awakened dinosaurs? Might they not worship a deity and be able to do so by being the product of that same deity's handiwork?

As to why Dinosaurs were included, what about a campaign set in the era of dinosaurs, or a world with a similar era? Certainly fantasy is not limited to medieval Europe!

I'm aware of that. From what I've heard, Eberron has done a lot with them. It always just struck me as odd though. I mean, a red dragon could eat a t-rex for breakfast. Barbequed t-rex.

Dinosaur bones often inspired the stories of dragons in ancient cultures, so that's an homage of sorts. Besides that though, dinosaurs do not detract from the fantasy feel of D&D any more than psionics does (and I like both). I like to think out of the box.

Dinosaurs etc. were staples in "lost world" type fantasy stories that appeared in various pulp magazines in the 30's and 40's and which were incredibly influential on the initial designers of the game.

Dinosaurs are used more than you think! Either for mounts or roaming creatures in specific worlds, dinosaurs aren't very out of place in a world of floating killer eyeballs or miniature cookie golems. I believe there are some cases of intelligent raptor species and definitely dino-mounts in Eberron.

I love dinosaurs. Someday, I while either play a druid who wildshapes into a t-rex, or perhaps an awakened t-rex.

Okay, so I'm wrong. It's just that when I think of dinos, I think of science rather than magic. I find it difficult to suspend my disbelief when I see a t-rex fighting a grick or something. It just doesn't seem mythical enough to me. I know that D&D is chock full of real-world animals, but there were mythical versions of those beasts, like the Claydonian Boar and the Nemean Lion. You didn't hear about "the Athenian velociraptor" or anything of that nature

Dinosaurs represent ancient primordialness which tends to survive better in fantasy settings than in real life. A lot of early life was far wackier than a lot of D&D's crazy, and sometimes silly, monsters.
Borris

06-16-07, 07:22 PM
When I think of dinosaurs in D&D, I think of a primordial, hard-of-access land, untouched by technology, where a handful of dinosaurs who managed to survive the cataclysm that ended their reign have since then managed to proliferate to the point where there is a full dinosaurain ecosystem on this far-off piece of land.

See Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World, Jules Vernes' Journey to the Center of the Earth, or even Edgar Wallace's King Kong.

The "lost world" fantasy/sci-fi literary genre has been around since at least the early 1900's. (The Lost World came out in 1912.)

Theory of evolution my dear Watson. The average human(oid) uses about 10% of thier brain's capability. Theoreticly, humanity(and humanoids) could evolve to the point that they would use 50% or even higher of thier brains strength. At that point, anything is possible.

But I'm getting off topic (I have a habit of getting threads off track it seems). That idea is another thread for another forum section.

It depends, a friend and I remember the old campy land of the lost stuff but started thinking about the idea of using the Lizardfolk in the same context as the Sleestak, evolved offspring of dinosaurs so I guess you could create one. Also, in FC1 or FC2 there is something that seems to be a primordial dinosaur that consumes all in its path, perhaps it is sort of a proto-dinosaur god, a being that is sort of an oversoul, holding all their primordial and primal urges and hunger but with no higher mind function, something that breeds raw destruction and assault...just a thought.

All of them were Gods I believe. They came to the mortal plane in the forms of the Earth's most powerful creatures.

But, yeah I'm ashamed of the rest of you. None of you played Sega Genesis?

Sauron -T-rex, God of gluttony
Diablo - T-rex,I think he was the devil and wanted to burn the entire world.
Armadon - A humanoid styractosaurs/ankylosaurus mixture. I think he was some god of the earth and protection?
Vertigo - Ancient Sorceress imprisoned beneath Stonehenge who finally got free.
Talon - Lord of Raptors and the hunt.
Blizzard - Big ape, patron of the frozen wilderness and frost.
Chaos - Big ape, patron of chaos, murder, and filth.

I'm sure we could do an Eberron adaption. Have these all be representations of the Soveriegn Host and Dark Six deep in Xen'drik perhaps?

I prefer the idea of some sort of sea serpent so big it makes the Tarasque look like a housecat!:evillaugh
RavinRay

06-21-07, 10:26 PM
Funny you should mention sea serpents and housecats in one sentence, because in one Norse story Thor visited a giant's home and was challenged to lift his housecat in the air. Despite his prodigious strength, Thor was only able to lift one forepaw. Embarassed, Thor was then told by the giant that the cat was actually an illusion of the Jormungandr the Midgard Serpent. Thor left and vowed to one day best Jormungandr the next time they meet. According to Ragnarok…

Let's see the tarrasque go against the Midgard Serpent! He'd have to be a quasi-deity at the very least, like the abominations in the Epic Level Handbook.

Oh, and going back to dinosaurs, if Godzilla were in a D&D world, you think he can be elevated to godhood? It's already in his name, with those first three letters.
Zousha_Omenohu

06-22-07, 12:57 AM
Yeah, those giants were really tricky. And Thor got his rear end handed to him by a giant's ol' granny (though to be fair, nothing can defeat Age)! I like Norse myths too.:D

As for Godzilla, I don't know if he's a dinosaur. He's just some overgrown lizard with really bad breath. Everyone's favorite giant gorilla would have him begging for mercy within the hour.:D :D

I think they're also included because it's a basic, fun, '80s thing; and the monstrous manuals and compendiums of previous editions had literally every monster imaginable in them.
While it may seem a little like science fiction, creatures like the displacer beast and illithid were also derived from science fiction stories: the Coeurl from Black Destroyer by A.E. Van Voght, and illithids, with their horrifying, alien and madness-inducing natures are clearly reminiscent of something from Lovecraft, if not Great Cthulhu himself.
Also, just because mummies, werewolves and vampires are a standard part of D&D, doesn't mean the campaign must take on a gothic horror feel. And zombies aren't universally Romero's territory.
I can also picture dinosaurs in that kind of primitive barbarian or tribal fantasy setting, or in perhaps lost island sort of adventures.
Mostly though, I think dinosaurs are just included because they're big, cool monsters; and I think that D&D, at least when at it's best, pushes boundaries of imagination. Everything should be included in it.

Can't forget Hel either. Half drop-dead gorgeous babe, half mouldering corpse. Now that's gross!

I can't really argue with your logic Sylvain, but I've always felt that dinosaurs really just don't evoke the same awe in me that dragons do. Maybe it's just because when I watched Jurassic Park for the first time (at home, I never saw it in the theater), I ended up running out of the room screaming.

Thank you!

According to Wikipedia:

Armadon: A ceratopsian dinosaur, and the God of Life, Armadon is a Virtuous Beast and fights to defend Urth and prevent its destruction. His genetic makeup appears to be part Chasmosaurus and Ankylosaurus. The tail tip is a combination of the ankylosaurus tail club and a stegosaurus' thagomizer.

Blizzard: Blizzard is one of two ape-beasts, the God of Good. A noble and heroic yeti-like beast, Blizzard wishes to undo the damage caused to Urth by both the meteor and the warring gods. Many of his abilities focus around the manipulation of ice and cold. Blizzard is the leader of the Virtuous Beasts, and his nemesis is Diablo.

Chaos: The second of the two ape-beasts, and the God of Decay, Chaos was formerly a scientist/witch doctor, transformed into his current state by accident. Chaos is an Evil Beast and is the crudest of all dino-beasts, with moves like Fart of Fury and Power Puke. His Golden Shower fatality (where Chaos dissolves the flesh from his victim with a geyser of acidic urine) was deemed so disgusting that the game was pulled from the market and replaced with a version lacking this fatality.

Diablo: Diablo is one of the two Tyrannosaurus rex dino-beasts, and God of Evil. This flame-spewing demonic dinosaur wishes to reduce Urth into a nightmarish, magma-filled wasteland entirely devoid of life. He is nearly identical to Sauron's graphic model, albeit somewhat smaller and with a different color scheme. Diablo is Blizzard's rival, and is the leader of the Evil Beasts.

Sauron: The second of the two Tyrannosaurus rex dino-beasts also being the tallest character and God of Hunger, Sauron's immortality only lasts whilst he devours human flesh, as he suffers from an insatiable appetite. In spite of this, he is not evil, but is in fact one of the Virtuous Beasts.

Talon: Talon is based on Deinonychus; he is supposed to be the God of Survival. One of the Virtuous Beasts, Talon is the patriarch of a huge family of raptors and is fiercely protective of it. It is for their sake that he plunges into the war. Talon is the fastest character in the game and is a favourite among many. Talon is also the shortest character, and numerous ranged attacks by taller enemies will simply miss him.

Vertigo: Vertigo is a unique beast based on a king cobra and a Sellosaurus (or possibly a Tanystropheus), Goddess of Insanity. She is one of the Evil Beasts and is the only female dino-beast available. The storyline of the game states that her imprisonment in the moon forced the other dino-beasts into suspended animation until the meteor impact.
