| Shar_the_Black05-03-07, 07:21 AM | Howdy folks, I recently recieved a most peculiar videogame as a birthday present. It's called Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, an RPG based around a young demon prince trying to conquer the Netherworld in a universe where the concepts of "Good and Evil" are handled to a humorous effect. I let my friend borrow it a while ago, and he loved the game. After a while, he asked me if I could try to create a campaign based in that universe. After thinking about it for some time, I think it might turn out to be an interesting gaming experience. Now for the questions. If anyone has ever played said game, would you have any suggestions or advice for how to set some things up? I've got a general idea of how the setting will work out (3 planes of existance: Celestia, Earth, and the Netherworld) but any other outside ideas would be appreciated. Also, how would you stat out characters such as Laharl, Etna, and the like? |
| Doom_Linnorm05-03-07, 08:01 AM | There are already people busy making this campaign setting, I read about it here: http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27066 I believe there are several threads on that forum even about it. I have Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories myself and am EXTREMELY ADDICTED to it. (around 90 hours of gameplay in around 2 weeks.)((I left it on for about 3 though to unlock a special stage to get a secret character.)) Unfortunatly, I couldn't take my PS2 with me to my boarding school, so I've gone cold turkey for about 3 weeks now, and the side effects are BAD. Warning: Do not buy this game unless you have enough free time to cope with the addiction, I find it more addicting then WoW. (Infact I used it to kill my WoW addiction more or less.) Benefits I got from it? there is no realm pressure, no monthly fee and no retards to deal with because its all singleplayer baby! Argh relapse!! *guys in white suits run in and wrestle him to the ground, injecting something into his blood stream while he's screaming bloody murder.... and he passes out* |
| Kain Darkwind05-03-07, 05:11 PM | Both this game and the sequel are very awesome. I've put 250+ hours into part 2 and 60+ into part 1 (I got part 2 first) so far. As for the levels of the characters, unlike most RPGs, you can go up to level 9999. Etna is a demon prince, Larharl is an Overlord and the terms seem to be similar to those DnD uses. I'd guess Etna to be about 50HD (1000th level in part 2) and Larharl about 60HD (1200th level in part 2) Flonne would be around 40HD. Tyrant Baal (4000th level) could easily be a 100HD entity or more. In one possible ending, Larharl destroys the entire planet with one blow. In part 1, he wipes out an entire fleet of millions of spaceships within minutes. And possessed enough control to not kill anyone, just destroy the ships. As Overlord he possessed offensive power beyond that shown by DnD gods, but defensive power significantly less. |
| Phantom Llama05-03-07, 05:44 PM | Finding a way to deal with the crazy power levels highlighted by Kain is key to a Disgaea campaign if you want to have a system that can incorporate higher-level beings. I'd recommend you just ignore the DMG figures for material hardness and HP and have attacks from powerful people cause loads of collateral damage to terrain and mooks. The characters with stats aren't affected any more than they would be normally because anyone important enough to have a statblock is a double-hard bastard who needs to be near the epicentre of an attack for it to have any noticeable effect. Terrain/items that you don't want to be easily destroyed can be assumed to be made out of special demonic/angelic/superscientific versions of the materials that have the normal D&D stats for such. Obviously this segues poorly with normal D&D, but unless you're planning a crossover that's not a problem. |

| DreadArchon05-04-07, 07:56 PM | You mean I can't shoe-horn Eberron into this?;) Oh, you could. It just wouldn't last longer than one Overlord's Wrath attack. I thought of this too, but of course, if the GitP people are already doing it, no point reinventing the wheel. The interesting part is, there's plenty to base a campaign around, from hunting pirates to leveling in the item world. And remember, when casting Zetta Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeam, the extra e's make it more powerful! |
| Phantom Llama05-04-07, 08:18 PM | You mean I can't shoe-horn Eberron into this?;) This raises the critical issue that a Disgaea/Eberron crossover would be indescribably awesome, and hence any D20 framework for the Nippon Ichiverse must be compatible with ECS materials. I guess I'll have to think of something else. |
