| Zousha_Omenohu06-18-07, 06:52 PM | I've often found myself reading the entries in various books about deities and found a tune popping into my head that fits with a particular god. I was thinking it would be interesting to see what kind of songs would the various D&D deities or other powers that be (the Celestial Hebdomad, the Archdukes of Hell, the Lady of Pain, etc.) listen to on their i-Pods, like in those ads. Here are a few of my own ruminations: Fharlanghn - "Wanderlust" by Nightwish Olidammara - "Born for Adventure" by Styx Mephistopheles - "March of Mephisto" by Kamelot (duh  ) Wee Jas - "Memento Mori" by Kamelot Nerull - "Ashes to Ashes" by Blind Guardian Obad Hai - "Turn the Page" by Blind Guardian Moradin - "Lord of the Blacksmiths" by Falconer Pelor - "Here Comes the Sun" by The Beatles Any other ideas?:) |

| Zousha_Omenohu06-19-07, 01:00 AM | Not to be rude Mr. Gray Richardson, but could you please specify which gods and/or cosmic beings these songs are being paired with? I don't think I've heard many of these pieces, and if I had a deity to connect the song with, I might have a better understanding. Thank you.:) |

| TheCrawlingSpleen06-20-07, 03:14 AM | Any demon lord or duke of Hell: Night on Bald Mountain I saw Fantasia when I was very young, and that sequence always gave me the creeps. For me, the music is connected most closely with Asmodeus, Graz'zt and the obyrith lords (I don't know why) but like I said, it works for any arch-devil/demon. |
| Yanagita Kunio06-20-07, 03:49 AM | Asmodeus technically holds the proprietary rights to using Night on Bald Mountain for his entrances, but demons adhere to copyright laws at about the same base rate they do every other kind of law. In terms of incidental, Un bel dģ vedremo (One fine day we shall see) from Madama Butterfly is perversely apt for Shar--being at once bleak, yearning, mournful, and alluring. Just conceptually substitute "heat death of the universe" for "return of long-lost husband".... |
| navar10006-20-07, 04:33 AM | Aphrodite - "Bolero" by Maurice Ravel Heironeous and Hextor fighting each other, Heironeous victorious of course - 1812 Overture Ra - Stargate theme |
| TimelordSimone06-20-07, 06:47 AM | Correllan Larethian & Lolth What is This Feeling? (From the musical Wicked) PS: 'this feeling' they decide is loathing. It's a song about utterly hating each other with a burning passion. |
| Lord_Korivol_of_Brukdule06-20-07, 09:35 PM | This reminds me... .i was flipping through Comp. Div. at my local bookstore and reading about Kord. Just as I get to the part about his chants, a local marching band (who was preforming there) gets warmed up and starts chanting THE EXACT SAME CHANT described in the books. I proceeded to dress in robes with a wrestling girdle and take on all challengers. Sort of. |
| Zousha_Omenohu06-21-07, 12:57 AM | Word for word? |
| Gray Richardson06-21-07, 02:22 AM | Asmodeus technically holds the proprietary rights to using Night on Bald MountainActually, that right belongs to Chernabog, a Slavic deity, who is the black god depicted in the Fantasia sequence. Chernabog means litterally "black god" (Russian: cherno = black & bog = god) and he was the god of darkness and winter for the western Slavs. He appeared in Neil Gaiman's novel American Gods which spelled his name as Czernobog. |

No question about the origin; I'm just claiming that Asmodeus has better IPR lawyers. Sort of like Michael Jackson having ownership of a pretty good chunk of the Beatles folio. Equally evil, too.... |
| Zalakhiel06-21-07, 06:41 AM | An addition I just cinsidered. Hextor: The Serpentine Offering, by Dimmu Borgir. It matches him perfectly!!!!!!!!!!!! |
| Rohano06-22-07, 10:55 AM | As someone who used to DJ semi-professionally, I feel like I should contribute. Pelor: "Sun King" Beatles or "Walking on Sunshine" Katrina and the Waves Vecna: "Zombie Nation" Rave(?) St. Cuthbert: "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" Beatles Fharlaghn: "On the Road Again" Willie Nelson/Bob Dylan or "Waltzing Matilda" Heironeous: "Law (Earthlings on Fire)" David Bowie Hextor: "Iron Man" Ozzy Yondalla: "Beer for my Horses" Toby Keith or "Bilbo Baggins" Leonard Nimoy Corellon Larethian: "I'm Too Sexy" Right Said Fred Olidammara: "Putting on the Ritz" Gruumsh: "Symphony of Destruction" Megadeth Nerull: "The Doom Song" Invader Zim Boccob: "Urban Spaceman" Neil Innes or "Blue" Eiffel 65 Erythnul: "When You're Evil" Voltaire Kord: "Kung Fu Fighting" Carl Douglas Garl Glittergold: "Pure Imagination" Wee Jas: "Thriller" Michael Jackson Bahamut: "Safety Dance" Men Without Hats Gygax: "Lightning Bolt" Attractive Eighties Women (snicker) Malar: "Jurassic Park" Weird Al Tenebrous aka Fake Primus: "Night on Bald Mountain" Primus: "Distractor" Niko Skorpio Oberon: "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" Tokens Ilsenine: "Time Warp" Celestian: "The Zephyr Song" Red Hot Chili Peppers Grazzt: "Ten Thousand Fists" Disturbed Orcus: "Living Dead Girl" Rob Zombie Mephistopheles: "Pretty Piece of Flesh" One Inch Punch Asmodeous: "Sympathy for the Devil" or "Radio Free Zerg" Sekolah: "The Shark" Phantom Lord Lady of Pain: "Her Majesty" Beatles Ao: "Walker - Texas Ranger" Chuck Norris! Just kidding. Almost any evil god: Almost any song by Midnight Syndicate. Pick a random god, pick a random track - it works. I'm sure that if I continue to think on these, I'll assign songs to every being in the game but I think this is enough. :) |
| GoriceXII06-22-07, 11:17 AM | Rohano: Some of your choices...I mean really cool tunes but "Safety Dance" for Bahamut? Is that just whimsy? On the other hand the ones for Pelor and Asmodeus are pretty good. Some of them are obviously just funny. "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" for St. Cuthbert makes me imagine the church singing that. Thanks for that--that's not going to go away quickly. Here are mine: Loviatar: "Sweet Dreams (are made of this)" Marilyn Manson cover Demogorgon: "Nemesis" by Shriekback Gruumsh: "We're Not Gonna Take It" by Twisted Sister Kord: "Princes of the Universe" by Queen |
| Dracomortis06-22-07, 11:22 AM | As someone who used to DJ semi-professionally, I feel like I should contribute. *snip* Nerull: "The Doom Song" Invader Zim *snip* Lots of :cookie: :cookie: :cookie: :cookie: :cookie: all around. You know you're beast when Gir hums your theme song. |
| Rohano06-22-07, 11:27 AM | Thanks. :) Maxwell's Silver Hammer is there because although Cuthbert is the ever-wise justice-bringer, there's always the players who abuse the idea and feel it's their right to smite everything under the sun, and eventually just devolve into a moron with a hammer-like object and the will to constantly wave it (same happens with Heironeous). Imagining the clergy singing it makes me laugh, too. Safety Dance is there because Bahamut always seems too cautious to me. I mean, as far as I know, he's not involved in any major wars (other than organizing defenses against Tiamat and appointing dragonborn and all that churchy stuff). He's just sort of guarding his money somewhere, surrounded by a bunch of thugs with divine ranks. I know it's not actually like that, but that's just how I see it without getting into details. The Doom Song fits well, I think. Very well, as a matter of fact. :) |
| Niek06-22-07, 11:57 AM | INVADER ZIM ROCKS! Orcus- "Fat" by Weird Al Yankovic |
| Dracomortis06-22-07, 12:18 PM | Orcus- "Fat" by Weird Al Yankovic Heheh. Too bad there's not a deity of farming, or we could use Amish Paradise. |
| Zousha_Omenohu06-22-07, 01:19 PM | What about Chauntea? |
| TheCrawlingSpleen06-22-07, 02:54 PM | Tenebrous: "Night on Bald Mountain" Orcus: "Living Dead Girl" Rob Zombie I'm kind of rusty on my planar history, but isn't that the same guy? |

Garagos-Rain of Blood by Slayer Cyric-Shut Me Up by MSI Sune-Milkshake by Kelis Jergal-Eternal Rest by A7X Tyr-And Justice For All by Metallica Kossuth-We Didn't Start the Fire by Billy Joel Asmodeus-Hell by Disturbed Torm-Holy Wars by Megadeth Pelor-Mr.Shining Sun:D Nerull-Thriller by Michael Jackson Shar-5 Minutes Alone by Pantera Bane-Mein Teil by Rammstein Orcus-Fat by weird al Mask-Flip Out like a Ninja (forgot who its by) not a god but still: Drizzt-The Emo Song |
| Dracomortis06-22-07, 05:37 PM | I'm kind of rusty on my planar history, but isn't that the same guy? At one point, yes. However, after Orcus became a mortal again (or, half-mortal, or whatever it is he is now), the essence of Tenebrous lingered on and became a vestige (Tome of Magic). |
| Zousha_Omenohu06-22-07, 07:19 PM | Kossuth-We Didn't Start the Fire (forgot who its by) Billy Joel. Here's a couple more: Heironeous: "Holy Thunderforce" by Rhapsody (of Fire) Moradin: "The Village of Dwarves" by Rhapsody (of Fire) Bahamut: "Power of the Dragonflame" by Rhapsody (of Fire). Yeah, I'm listening to those guys right now. They're lyrics sound like they came straight out of a D&D module!:ayyyy!: |
| M1kh43l_P4r4d1s006-22-07, 07:30 PM | I have no idea why this wasn't used. Fharlanghn: Rambling Man. |

Levistus: When You're Evil (Voltaire) Baalzebul: Angel of Fate (Crematory) Asmodeus: The Devil Incarnate (Death Angel) Pazuzu: Die Rache Krieg Lied Der Assyriche (Nile) Pelor: Loved by the Sun (Tangerine Dream) Nerull: Widowmaker (Wasp) Wee Jas: Harvester of Sorrow (Metallica) Hextor: The Crimson King (Demons & Wizards) Olidammara: The Sharpest Lives (My Chemical Romance) Fraz'Urblu: Mr. Crowley (Ozzy Osbourne) |
| Adrez Nesnsid06-23-07, 09:36 PM | You know, I seem to recall seeing a thread like this somewhere before. If I recall correctly, somebody suggested that Olidammara's theme be a parody of "What if God Was One of Us" entitled "What if God Smoked Cannabis", and enclosed a link to an mp3 of the song. (I can't seem to find the old thread or the link anymore though) |
| XHereticX06-23-07, 10:52 PM | Oh, I got some more. Bacchus-Get Stoned by Hinder Kord-Iron Man by ozzy Lolth-that one song by 3 seconds from mars with spiders in it Talona-My Plague by Slipknot Bane-The Nazi anthem (whatever it is) Erythnul-Break Stuff by Limp Bizkit |

The ranks tightly closed! SA marches with a firm, courageous pace. Comrades, shot dead by Red Front and Reaction March in spirit within our ranks. Make the streets free, for the brown battalions Make the streets free, for the SA man. Already millions are looking to the swastika full of hope The day of freedom and bread is dawning. For the last time the rollcall has sounded we are all ready for the fight Soon Hitler-flags will fly over every street The servitude will not last long now. The flag high! The ranks tightly closed! SA marches at a firm, courageous pace. Comrades, shot dead by Red Front and Reaction March in spirit within our ranks. Now, while I do not dispute the evil and horror caused by Germany under the NSDAP, I do dispute that this song is inherently fitting for Bane. To the contrary, it sings of freedom and hope. This song does not inherently inspire towards evil to any who are unfamiliar with it or the connotations of the names in its lyrics. |

| Millenia06-26-07, 08:25 PM | .... So which god gets "Stairway to Heaven"? |
| Zousha_Omenohu06-27-07, 12:22 AM | Waukeen, maybe? I've only heard a bit of the song, but I know it talks about buying the stairway, and Waukeen is the patron of wealth and trade. Also, here's another one: Umberlee - "Royal Galley" by Falconer |
| Gray Richardson06-27-07, 01:53 AM | .... So which god gets "Stairway to Heaven"?Stairway to Heaven works best with Selūne I should think, as the Infinite Staircase begins (or at least has one beginning point) in her palace in the plane of the Gates of the Moon. |
| guru789206-27-07, 03:55 AM | It’s totally applicable and undeniable that Kord can only have one impeccable theme song: Kord's theme song = 'Gonna Fly Now' or the Rocky theme song Also why should the deities theme songs be completely applicable to their external veiws. I mean Kord could like no other song than 'Gonna fly now', but I’d like to pose a couple of others based on peoples suppressed qualities. Obad-hai 'lean on me' Bill Withers Heironeous 'rebel yell' Billy Idol Ehlonna: 'Puttin on the Ritz' by TACO Fharlanghn: 'don't you (forget about me)' Simple Minds Corellon Larethian: 'it's raining men' (actually I don't listen to this song so i have no idea who its by) Lolth: 'hooked on a feeling' Blue Swede yes, that is right, the guru has gotten the last word in |

It's about a sheep stealing man who commits suicide... unless your saying it because a swagman is a wanderer. Who said his worshippers had to be benevolent? A crazed wanderer is still a wanderer. And a crazed thieving wanderer is usually an interesting wanderer. |

| Rohano10-18-07, 09:58 PM | More suggestions: Lady of Pain - "Iron Maiden" Iron Maiden Duh! Everytime I hear that song these days, I think of an epic battle in Sigil wherein the Lady obliterates everyone. *plots a Planescape movie* St. Cuthbert - "St. Andrew (This Battle is in the Air)" White Stripes I think that would go best as a battle anthem while St. Cuthbert is extracting justice in the heavens. Ao - "Disconnected" Queensryche Kurtulmak - "Run to the Hills" Iron Maiden Dispater - "Fear of the Dark" Iron Maiden Orcus (Reborn) - "Back in Black" AC/DC Celestian - "Intergalactic" Beastie Boys Duh spelljammer duh duh duh. Levistus - "Everybody Hurts" REM I should specify that I think of Levistus as a frustrated emo. It's noted in Asmodeus' entry in the BOVD that when all the archdevils meet in Nessus, Levistus is sulky (because it's the only time he's released from his glacier - to be Azmod's b****). Aphrodite - "Conquest" White Stripes |
| ArcTan10-18-07, 11:37 PM | FLAWLESS VICTORY (Especially the G&R version) Not exactly a hard one, though, is it? But to be honest, I don't like Sympathy for the Devil representing Asmodeus. The Devil of the song is a much more Neutral Evil or even Chaotic Evil kind of guy than Asmodeus. If you go with the "people who started the war just to spread Evil" theme of Yugoloths, it's much more their theme song than Asmodeus'. Asmodeus is more like Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall". Though, to be honest, the D&D geek in me can't hear SNL's "Sloths" video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LAZgcC3jgo) without thinking "'Loths!". |
| Guardian110-19-07, 12:05 AM | Erythnull: Epiphany-Stephen Sondheim from Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. A song where the main guy is ranting about how everyone deserves to die? Yeah, smacks of Erythnull to me. |
| Devil Gnasher10-19-07, 12:40 AM | [QUOTE=ArcTan;14113509]Not exactly a hard one, though, is it? But to be honest, I don't like Sympathy for the Devil representing Asmodeus. If you go with the "people who started the war just to spread Evil" theme of Yugoloths, it's much more their theme song than Asmodeus'. Asmodeus is more like Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall".[QUOTE] So you think that supporting brutally millitaristic nation states, even through trickery and deception, is a Chaotic trait? To me a Chaotic Evil would want the complete and utter colapse of all governments, restraint and society. The Devil in the song "Sympathy for the Devil" sounds pretty Lawful to me. In my opinion the difference between Law and Chaos is ideological abnd philosophical. That's what makes the whole Blood War so stupid and pointless anyway. In that way it also makes perfect sense from a fiendish outlook. :) |
| ArcTan10-19-07, 02:36 AM | Well, the point of Sympathy for the Devil is that, despite the dictatorships and military totalitarianism and whatnot, the song *sounds* like a party. The Devil is a jaunty, laughing gentleman, and he clearly finds what he's doing to be as pointless as anyone else, and finds humor in that. Notice that the things he takes pleasure in are not dull, long, listless military reigns, but *revolutions*, bloody wars, and assassinations: I stuck around st. petersburg When I saw it was a time for a change Killed the czar and his ministers Anastasia screamed in vain He mentions the Russian Revolution, not the Soviet state that happened after it -- the thing he takes pleasure in is the death of the czar *itself*, and the change (and chaos) that it causes, not the dictatorship. I rode a tank Held a generals rank When the blitzkrieg raged And the bodies stank What he likes is World War II, not the reign of the Third Reich (which would've been more likely to occur had the war itself not happened, and the Allies surrendered or something). He's holding a "general's rank", but he doesn't mention on which side, and we get the impression he doesn't care. I watched with glee While your kings and queens Fought for ten decades For the gods they made He's *glad* about the fact that our history is filled with bloody war between different factions. If he were Asmodeus, he'd want to support one side and give it total imperial dominance over the others, not to simply prolong war. The "ten decades" is most likely the Hundred Years' War, which was many things, but was *certainly* not an era of the rule of law, or of social stability. It was an era when the question of where kingship lay and who ruled what was constantly in flux. I shouted out, Who killed the kennedys? When after all It was you and me He is, in other words, supporting the massive social and political unrest in the United States throughout the 1960s and 1970s, as anti-Vietnam radical leftists threatened to bring the country down, fueled largely by hot-running conspiracy theories that JFK's assassination had been engineered by the CIA. (Yes, at the time, it was very clear that Jagger's lyrics were referencing left-wing conspiracy-theory hysteria, though our memory of that has faded somewhat.) This also doesn't seem very lawful. Finally, the most abstract verse: But whats confusing you Is just the nature of my game Just as every cop is a criminal And all the sinners saints As heads is tails Just call me lucifer cause Im in need of some restraint He says the "nature of his game" is confusing. He presents his "game" as something that involves the inversion of all roles, the breaking of all rules, and himself as a wild, unrestrained force. (Indeed, naming him, putting a label on him, is a form of "restraining" him and making him manageable.) No, sorry, I don't read this as Lawful Evil at all. Of course, a line-by-line analysis is kind of pointless -- the real point is that I can't at all imagine the Asmodeus of D&D getting down to this song and having it be his theme song. It doesn't fit him. I really do love this song and have spent a lot of time thinking about what it means, and would be happier to discuss it outside a D&D context, but in this context, no, it's not the song of Lawful Evil, not at all. It's a song about someone who *starts wars* and doesn't care who wins and doesn't care what the war is *about* as long as people die and people suffer, who sets up meaningless causes (like "Who killed the Kennedys?") and revels in people's hypocritical pursuit of them, who breaks down whole social systems just for the sake of a "change". Of all the personalities in D&D, it fits the Yugoloths best (since the whole "start a war just to mess with people thing" is their schtick). |
| Rohano10-20-07, 08:30 AM | Although I agree that a song about causing chaos is... somewhat chaotic, has anyone considered the lawfulness required to go about causing chaos effectively? To start a war, there's a lot to plan out. Anarchists, although praising chaos, have to be very engineered in their work to do it effectively. Wanton crime and harrassment won't bring the world down - assassinating rulers (very tricky indeed without a plan in mind), building war propoganda, fueling hot disagreements between populations... all requires a cunning, even lawful mind. In order to cause that degree of chaos, you need a little law. So perhaps he's just lawful evil but has chaotic goals? Or maybe his true goal is veiled, and the song is just about how successful his campaigns are (if he's in need of some restraint, that could mean that he feels like he's almost too successful). But anyway. I've been looking for songs for Primus. Naturally, one might consider the band Primus but I didn't. I did, however, consider "Technologic" (Daft Punk). Certainly seems right for the modrons, but what about Primus, alone? Bacchus - "Drunken Lullabies" Flogging Molly Does anyone know if there were any nymphs on the Seelie Council? | Guardian110-20-07, 11:46 AM | I'm So Pretty - West Side Story or You're So Vain - Carly Simon I doubt that You're So Vain qualifies for Sune. After all, Sune is a love goddess. Granted, her beauty is supposed to surpass that of a nymph's, but You're So Vain is intended as a song making fun of an ex because of how vain that person is. As I write this, I'm looking at Sune's entry in the Faiths and Pantheons book, and her dogma seems to emphasize the inner beauty message. It seems as if inner beauty and vanity aren't equal. At least, that's how I see it. Then again, you seem to be following a different train of of thought on this. Please enlighten, as this could be the start of an interesting discussion. By all that's sacred and holy, I sound like a college professor, don't I? Good Job on I Feel Pretty (actual title), though. That song captures the whole idea of Sune perfectly. Feeling pretty because you're in love? Yeah, that definitely qualifies for Sune. If this next one has been mentioned before, sorry. If it hasn't, it's about time. Moradin: Foundations of Stone-LOTR: The Two Towers soundtrack. The entire song is about the Misty Mountains and the dwarven stronghold contained therein. Yeah, seems very appropriate for Moradin. |

Being able to be cunning and make coherent plans doesn't make you Lawful. Think about it -- that means Chaos = Stupid. That's exactly the kind of thing the D&D designers were trying to get away from with alignment. A paragon of Chaos like Demogorgon has very high mental stats -- Int, Wis and Cha. He's very smart. He's completely capable of thinking into the future. Chaos describes his *goals*, not his *behavior*. Enh, like I said, the song feels more like how I'd characterize the Yugoloths than the Demon Lords. But anyway. I've been looking for songs for Primus.
