My 13 years long campaign is finally reaching its end. The players have successfully raised from oblivion four greater deities to help them deal with a incoming yugoloth invasion in their home plane, and have begun unifying the races of the world for the war.

Now, how do I get them deities to help their side without them doing all the work? So far I have:

Making the BBEGs immune to divine energy. I remember there is a class or PrCs that gives that.

Making the deities available only for a short, limited time, and have them help indirectly by giving bonuses to the army. This works pretty well since I found 4 different bard builds that can give +16 to att/dmg, 23 fast heal, and +20/15/10/5 bab to all listeneres, as well as using Doomspeak to give -20 to the attacks, saves, skills and ability checks of the foes (I know its usually -10, this is after a lot of building up). This would happen during a maximum of 20 rounds for the final battle, so to speak.

Now, this seems to fit pretty well, since, you know, four deities, four different bard builds that can give massive bonuses penalties to help the good guys armies, but, is that it? I havent been able to even find any info on making marshall/dragon shaman/divine mind auras affect large groups/areas. Anyone has any info on this?

You could have the VBBEG (Very Big Bad Evil Guy) be something epic, a CR 20+ higher than the PCs' level, including all their allies. Of course, if the deities take care of the VBBEG alone, then the PCs can just drink wine and chew gum; but the VBBEG knows something's cooking, so he stays in his own plane where no one can slay him AND where he can help his army. So while your 4 deities distract him, the PCs and their army can take care of the invaders.

Well, I dont know... thing is I want to keep the NPCs (even the gods) on a backseat to the PCs.

I guess the question I have is why the players needed the four greater deities to start with? If they really are only going to play second fiddle to the PCs anyway, you could just as easily have had the PCs find four great weapons to use in the war. Of course, you could also have it where the four deities provide the characters with unique divine weapons to help them, since they're newly brought out of oblivion they could legitimately claim they don't have the power right now to deal with the armies themselves but are quite willing to give the PCs artifacts/relics to do the job for them - with the condition the artifacts/relics be returned if the PCs win.

That seems fair and fine, thanks.
