| Xavier_of_Cormyr04-15-07, 02:14 AM | So during the various versions of the D&D game, many devils have held the title of "Duke of Hell", serving as a right hand man for the lords of the nine. One thing that was left out, except for a quick reference here & there, were the dukes. Geryon, Bael, etc. Anyone out there who is a devil lover & can name the dukes and fallen/former lords, or any unique devil for that matter, would would really be helping me out. And if you happen to know, gimme sources (aside from the old 1e monster manual, I have that) Thanx:cool: |
| Witch04-15-07, 02:34 AM | Many are mentioned in Fiendish Codex 2. You can find references in some old dragon magazines, but most of the time, they're out of date. (Dragon 75, 76 and 91, though I forgot which one had the dukes and which had the rabble of devilkin). There's not a lot of flavor info to be found in those either - it doesn't go beyond a name and a few sentences. Dicefreaks' Gates of Hell devoted a chapter to the Dukes of Hell. They might be useable even if you're not using the rest of that cosmology. If you're interested, you can find the chapter here (http://www.prism.gatech.edu/~gth669h/TGoH/TGoH7.pdf). |
| Orshallen04-15-07, 02:44 AM | Gates of Hell by Dicefreaks is a good place to look. Dukes are in Chapter 7. Dicefreaks are site moving right now but here's the backup link to Gates: http://www.prism.gatech.edu/~gth669h/TGoH/ ...curses! Ninjad by Witch! |
| Shemeska the Marauder04-15-07, 03:05 AM | Fiendish Codex II names some of the more important and notable ones, but the entire class of Baatorian nobility below the ranks of the Lords of the 9 have never been very detailed, in any edition of the game. A few of them were named in various Planescape sources, but they were mostly ignored in favor of expanding the details and history of the Lords of the 9, and even more so on the histories of the Dark 8. Former Lords of the 9: Beherit - lord of Maladomini prior to Baalzebul. After Beherit's execution by Asmodeus, the layer was given to Baalzebul, and the resulting political fallout led to Nergal being stripped of power and exiled to Avernus. Zarial - lord of Avernus prior to Bel, who led a coup against her and was named as her successor by Asmodeus, along with the backing and support of the Dark 8 (who he had served under the command of Dagos). Geryon - former lord of Stygia. Dead. Incredibly dead. Devoured by Asmodeus dead. Moloch - former lord of Malbolge. Exiled to Avernus at present (IIRC). |

| Xavier_of_Cormyr04-15-07, 10:28 AM | fiendish codex II is pretty weak in this dept. outside of tibits in that book, and the original 1e monster manual, i'm just looking for fluff here. and nothing against the people over at dicefreaks, but i've checked out their stuff in the past, and its a little to epic/power game for me. the fluff is ok, but generally not my cup of tea. to each his own.... the main reason i ask all this is that i've updated the 2e adventure "a paladin in hell" to 3.5, and liked that the PCs will get to go up against Amon & Geryon (yes, i know officially Asmodeus layed the smackdown on him)on their home turf (sort of) |
| Raymond_Luxury_Yacht04-15-07, 10:35 PM | Moloch - former lord of Malbolge. Exiled to Avernus at present (IIRC). Moloch was exiled from Baator. He was last seen on an unnamed Prime world that got cut off from the rest of the planes. He was either killed on it by a group of adventurers, thus taking him out forever, or he died when it exploded, presumably sending his essence back to Baator. |

He was either killed on it by a group of adventurers, thus taking him out forever, or he died when it exploded, presumably sending his essence back to Baator. FC:II has him back in Baator, in exile on Avernus. Presumably when that prime world in the Apocalypse Stone blew up, his essence returned to Baator, or that was only an avatar of his rather than his true self. |
| Stevenoble04-17-07, 07:40 PM | Check Book of Vile Darkness, got all the top dogs of evil in there. |
| Witch04-17-07, 08:59 PM | Check Book of Vile Darkness, got all the top dogs of evil in there. But not the Dukes of Hell. |
| Shemeska the Marauder04-17-07, 09:20 PM | Check Book of Vile Darkness, got all the top dogs of evil in there. But not any of the Yugoloth lords. Or Apomps of the Demodands. |
| PunkRockBard04-17-07, 09:46 PM | But not any of the Yugoloth lords. Or Apomps of the Demodands. Yes. That is still a sore spot for me! Part of me is just giving up on any Yugoloth lords getting props from WOTC. I spose a Dragon article is our best bet..and who knows about that. |
| Sachiel04-17-07, 10:36 PM | The Yugoloths are such incredible puppetmasters that they have even convinced Wizards of the Coast that they do not exist. We all know the truth though... ...everything happens because of the Yugoloths...everything... ...we're just not paranoid enough to realize it. |
| Sorcen_Anenooata04-17-07, 10:51 PM | Brilliant deduction Sachiel. Just as long as no one gets the idea that Sorcen is pulling the strings of the Yugoloths. :shifty: Back on topic, heres a Wikipedia article with some Dukes of Hell. Rabble of Devil-kin.
