Has anyone written down the vitals of this Goddess? For those who do not know, she was Eris to the Greeks, Discordia to the Romans, and is considered to be the Goddess of Chaos, Confusion, and Discord (and as a side note started the 1st war among men- the Trojan War).

I do not believe Eris has EVER been statted in a D&D product.

Which is somewhat of a shame; after all, it was ultimately her fault the Trojan War started.

Perhap we should stat her. Any suggestions on her Divine Rank? I know it can't be super low since her Golden Apple of Kallisti spell turned Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite against each other and in their obssessed quest to win the apple they decided to cheat and that cheating caused the Trojan War (which Eris still gets the credit since she made the apple). How about classes?

I don't think Eris made the apple - they grew on a special tree that was guarded by the titan Atlas I believe... didn't Hercules have to fetch three of them for one of his Twelve Labors?

At any rate, the Apples of Discord are artifacts of immense power, beyond the power of Eris to create. She is only a servant of Ares, and he couldn't create such things.

THE MYTH OF THE APPLE OF DISCORD

It seems that Zeus was preparing a wedding banquet for Peleus and Thetis and did not want to invite Eris because of Her reputation as a trouble maker.*

This made Eris angry, and so She fashioned an apple of pure gold** and inscribed upon it KALLISTI ("To The Prettiest One" (other sorces say "To the Fairest")) and on the day of the fete She rolled it into the banquet hall and then left to be alone.

Now, three of the invited goddesses,*** Athena, Hera, and Aphrodite, each immediately claimed it to belong to herself because of the inscription. And they started fighting, and they started throwing punch all over the place and everything.

Finally Zeus calmed things down and declared that an arbitrator must be selected, which was a reasonable suggestion, and all agreed. He sent them to a shepherd of Troy, whose name was Paris; but each of the sneaky goddesses tried to outwit the others by going early and offering a bribe to Paris.

Athena offered him Heroic War Victories, Hera offered him Great Wealth, and Aphrodite offered him the Most Beautiful Woman on Earth. Being a healthy young Trojan lad, Paris promptly accepted Aphrodite's bribe and she got the apple and he got ...er a woman.

As she had promised, she maneuvered earthly happenings so that Paris could have Helen (The Helen) then living with her husband Menelaus, King of Sparta. Anyway, everyone knows that the Trojan War followed when Sparta demanded their Queen back and that the Trojan War is said to be The First War among men.
**************
As for the other golden apples, Hercules did have to get 3 for his trials and there are atleast 2 other myths with golden apples as the focus. Though only Eris is credited with creating hers. the others were found or were grown.

One more thing....
ERIS, in Greek mythology, a sister of the war-god Ares (Homer, Iliad, iv. 440), and in the Hesiodic theogony (225) a daughter of Night

I know she also had several sons and daughters including Strife and Sorrow

Greek Myth is so much fun...very inspirational.

Though, I wouldn't mind seeing a good write up for those Apples.

Hint, hint...maybe Brian.C will take on the challenge. :D

I had a DM force me to use her as a patron.
I don’t like Eris. : 88E:

But um... I can’t think of any obvious classes for her
grimgoth

05-03-04, 01:37 PM
Suggestionss on Eris/Discordia divine lvl? I doubt she is an intermediate goddess or higher....should she be on par with Anubis/Bast? Lower? As for classes I could see thief (not very PC I know), maybe mage for illusions and enchantments.

Well, Eris should be about on the level of Anubis... say Divine Rank 7 or so. Chaotic Evil, just like her master, Ares; Levels in Rogue and Illisionist, like has already been said; her domains should likely be Chaos, Trickery, and Madness (the last one taken from the De&De book itself), but not Evil; although she is definately evil, Eris delights more in spreading chaos and discord more than evil itself. She is the ultimate wicked prankster.

Maybe when I have time I'll try to do a full write up of Eris. I never say no to a challenge.

Not sure I agree with the alignment. I was thinking more Chaotic Neutral. On a side note Ares is her brother not master (unless you watch Xena--which that show also makes her the **** of the gods). :D

Eris IS his brother, yes (I probably should have mentioned that), but even in real mythology, she's also his servant (maybe "apprentice" or "protege" would be a more appropriate word, even though she isn't a warrior).

Fact is, in myth, Ares was the only Olympian who didn't despise Eris; they all hated her brecause she was such a nuisance, and it was likely only his influence that kept Zeus from getting rid of her for good. The myth about the Apple of Discord isn't the only myth where she showed up - only the most famous.

Okay, I’ve tried my best.

Monsters and characters I’m good at… gods are another story. But I never say no to a challenge. I’ve tried to do my best, seeing that we now have 3.5 rules and the De&De book is written in 3.0.

So here we go…

ERIS

The Goddess of Discord

Lesser God
Symbol: Pair of green, feminine eyes
Home Plane: Olympus
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Portfolio: Chaos, fraud, disorder, malicious mischief
Worshippers: Thieves, con artists, the insane
Cleric Alignments: CN, CE
Domains: Chaos, Madness, Trickery
Favored Weapon: Dagger

Goddess of chaos and discord, and one of the biggest troublemakers in creation, Eris appears as a gorgeous, buxom woman with flowing blonde hair and big green eyes, dressed in flowing white robes. However, any smart person who looks upon her can quickly tell her wicked nature – it seems that the sinister gleam in her eye, always on the lookout for a new victim, never seems to leave.

Eris is the daughter of Night and the half-sister of the war-god Ares; she herself is the mother of Sorrow and Strife. She seems to have one purpose in her existence – tormenting both gods and mortals alike with pranks that can often have lethal results. She delights in the suffering of others, and cares for little else than herself. She is an eager follower of her half-brother, and can often be seen tagging along behind him when he goes into battle, often enjoying a cruel laugh at the sight of bloodshed.

It was in fact Eris’s most notorious prank that ultimately caused the Trojan War, a bloody conflict believed to be the first war among mortals. Though starting the war was not her intention, she likely showed no regret or remorse when it started.

Indeed, all the gods of Olympus other than Ares despise Eris for all the malicious things she’s done to them, and if it weren’t for his support, Zeus would likely have banished her from the realm a long time ago. It may be only a matter of time before he does so anyway, for few of them like Ares much either.

Dogma

Eris has few rules for her clerics, and encourages them to break down any rules that stand in their way. The spread of chaos is the best way to spread her word. Clerics who take up arms must not only defeat enemies, but also humiliate them in the most humiliating ways possible. Don’t be afraid to lie, cheat, or betray anyone who trusts you… a fool who falls for your charms deserves what he gets. Don’t let anyone get in the way of you doing what pleases you… live free, and enjoy what you can get.

Clergy and Temples

Eris’s clerics wear no obvious identification, and their shrines are hidden. Clerics of Eris are known throughout communities as bad news, and are hunted down when possible. Despite her own alignment, Eris's clerics cannot be good-aligned.
Clerics of Eris are usually female, and often insane. They are sadists who love nothing more than tormenting others – doing so in a goddesses name merely gives them a demented focus. They have a hedonistic lifestyle that is second only to followers of Dionysus.
In a campaign where the Greek and core D&D pantheons intertwine, Eris’s clerics are one of the few who might ally themselves with those of Tharizdun. Both priesthoods share similar goals – the spread of chaos and madness. However, such alliances are always shaky and usually temporary – even Eris’s clerics know that little benefit can come from working with the servants of the Dark One.

Eris cast spells from all schools except her prohibited school, Necromancy.

Possessions: Eris’s most notorious prank involved a potent artifact now known as the Golden Apple of Discord. She was infuriated when a festival was held in Zeus’s palace that she was not invited to (Zeus worried – probably with good reason – that she would ruin it). Thus, she obtained this golden apple, scrawled, “For the Fairest” on it, and hurled it into the feast-hall.
Apparently, the magic of this cursed item was so powerful that Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite all desired it, and each seemed willing to tear each other apart to prevent the other two from having it. In the end, Zeus had to settle it by letting a mortal commoner from Troy by the name of Paris decide who would get it.

Naturally, this is what led to the terrible Trojan War, the first war among mortals, which shook the world and rattled Olympus itself. Eris no longer has the original apple (presumably Aphrodite – whom Paris gave it to – still has it), and it is a mystery where she got it in the first place. Certainly, she lacks the power to create artifacts that could enspell even a greater goddess. Some fear that Eris may have allies among even stronger dark deities… (Using the above note in “Clergy and Temples,” the Golden Apple of Discord may well be an old artifact belonging to Tharizdun that Eris obtained from one of the Dark Lord’s priesthood.)

Other Divine Powers

As a lesser deity, Eris can take 10 on any check. Eris treats a 1 on any attack roll or saving throw normally, not as an automatic failure. She is immortal.

Senses: Eris can see, hear, touch, and smell at a distance of eight miles. As a standard action, she can perceive anything within eight miles of her worshippers, holy sites, objects, or any location where her name or one of her titles has been spoken in the last hour. She can extend her senses to up to five locations at once. She can block the sensing power of deities of her rank or lower at up to two remote locations at once for up to eight hours.

Portfolio Sense: Eris is instantly aware of any swindle, theft, or act of malicious mischief that affects 500 or more individuals (and she relishes every one). She is also instantly aware of any important action taken by her half-brother and mentor Ares, unless he purposely wishes to keep it hidden from her (or anyone).

Automatic Actions: Eris can use Bluff, Intimidate, Sense Motive, and Slight of Hand as free actions, so long as the DC for the attempt is 20 or lower. She can perform up to 5 such actions per round.

Create Magic Items: Eris can create any magic item which might be of use to a thief, con artist, or prankster (like a rope of climbing or bag of holding) so long as the item’s market price does not exceed 30,000 gp.

AVATARS

Eris usually sends an avatar to the mortal world for one purpose – to torment mortals. Eris takes great joy in humiliating mortals in high positions of power and authority with cruel tricks. Even her own clerics are not safe from her; in fact, they are often told to keep wary, lest their patron decide to “test” them by seeing if they can survive one of her pranks.

Sometimes, when Ares sends an avatar into the world, his sister’s avatar might accompany him, hiding backseat on his chariot and enjoying the carnage caused in his wake. This is one of the most dangerous situations mortals could find themselves in – Ares’s avatar is deadly enough, but Eris is more bloodthirsty than normal when she is beside her mentor.

Avatar of Eris: As Eris except divine rank 4; AC 50 (touch 33, flat footed 44); Atk +56/+56/+51/+46/+41 (1d6+5+7/15-20 +5 anarchic, keen dagger or spell +53 melee touch or +46 ranged touch; SQ DR 39/epic, fire resistance 24; SR 36; divine aura 40 ft., DC 14; Saves: Fort 42, Ref 44, Will 47. All Skill Ranks reduced by 4.

Salient Divine Abilities: Alter Size, Alter Form, Divine Rogue, Divine Glibness, Wave of Chaos

Spell-Like Abilities: Caster Level 14, Save DC 23

Phew! Well, there you go. Hope you liked it. I won’t claim to be an expert on deity design…

So comments and criticisms are welcome.

I see her alignment more as chaotic neutral....this is the true form of chaos. I think she is easily bored and more interested in having fun (or finding entertainment at something elses expense). Sure bad (evil?) things may happen, but I don't think she goes out of her way to cause evil. As such I recomend the cleric alignments be CE, CN, CG.

I dunno...

From what I can tell, the mother of Strife and Sorrow seems evil to me... and I doubt that any good clerics would want her as a patron, given the dogma I have provided. Eris is out to have fun, no doubt, but she does so at the expense of others, with no care at all for the consequences; certainly not like Olidimmara.

I don't think I'll change it...

I agree with my beloved Airsucker. :D Eris isn't evil, but Chaotic Neutral. Her entire concern is the spreading of chaos and disorder, and she'd have no qualms about aiding people to do it. I could easily see Chaotic Good clerics of Eris embarassing and undermining the authority of a LE dictatorship. The Ancient Greeks, for the most part, liked an orderly existance, so Eris takes on a less-desirible image in their myths. :)

A further vote for Eris being CN (or rather whatever the equivalent to exalted or vile is along the Chaotic branch). Her priests would tend towards evil effects, because particularly in a marginal society anarchy is really dangerous- but I see no intrinsic reason she couldn't have a few CG priests.

As for classes, I see her more as Rogue 20/Bard 20 than Rogue 20/Illusionist 20. She just wasn't that overtly powerful, but was extremely effective.

Regarding Eris's holy symbol, I think that perhaps you should consider using The Sacred Chao (http://jubal.westnet.com/hyperdiscordia/sacred_chao.html), the symbol of Discordianism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discordianism), rather than "a pair of green feminine eyes"

Eris wold be truely difficult to classify.

Firstly she is a daughter of a Titan, Night, this same Titan bore Aether ("atmosphere") and Hemera ("day"). Later, on her own, Night gives birth to Momus "blame", Ponos "toil", Moros "fate", Thanatos "death", Hypnos "sleep", the Oneiroi "the tribe of dreams", the Hesperides, the Keres and Fates, Nemesis, Apate "deception", Philotes "friendship", Geras "age", and Eris "strife".

Many of these are more or less concepts rather then beings. It was a pecularity to personify nearly everything in the Greek and Roman world, still many of these beings were understood to not be beings in the physical sense, but ideals and concepts. Eris is only mentioned 3 times as far as i can tell by Hesiod.

The first mention divides "strife" into two persona's

So, after all, there was not one kind of Strife alone, but all over the earth there are two. As for the one, a man would praise her when he came to understand her; but the other is blameworthy: and they are wholly different in nature.

For one fosters evil war and battle, being cruel: her no man loves; but perforce, through the will of the deathless gods, men pay harsh Strife her honour due.

But the other is the elder daughter of dark Night (Nyx), and the son of Cronus who sits above and dwells in the aether, set her in the roots of the earth: and she is far kinder to men. She stirs up even the shiftless to toil; for a man grows eager to work when he considers his neighbour, a rich man who hastens to plough and plant and put his house in good order; and neighbour vies with his neighbour as he hurries after wealth. This Strife is wholesome for men. And potter is angry with potter, and craftsman with craftsman, and beggar is jealous of beggar, and minstrel of minstrel.
In Hesiod's Works and Days 11–24

In his other work Theogony (226–232), hesiiod mentions her children, who are less then liked by men

But abhorred Eris ('Strife') bare painful Ponos ('Toil/Labor'), Lethe ('Forgetfulness') and Limos ('Famine') and tearful Algea (Pains/Sorrows), Hysminai ('Fightings/Combats') also, Malchai ('Battles'), Phonoi ('Murders/Slaughterings'), Androctasiai ('Manslaughters'), Neikea ('Quarrels'), Pseudea ('Lies/Falsehoods'), Amphillogiai ('Disputes'), Dysnomia ('Lawlessness') and Ate ('Ruin/Folly'), all of one nature, and Horkos ('Oath') who most troubles men upon earth when anyone wilfully swears a false oath.

In Homer's Iliad Book 4 she is seen as sister of Ares and so presumably daughter of Zeus and Hera:

Strife whose wrath is relentless, she is the sister and companion of murderous Ares, she who is only a little thing at the first, but thereafter grows until she strides on the earth with her head striking heaven. She then hurled down bitterness equally between both sides as she walked through the onslaught making men's pain heavier. She also has a son whom she named Strife.

Zeus also cammands her on occasion to arrouse men on earth, for example the Achaeans, or greeks in the trogen war.

Hence it would seem that there are two very different Eris, one the daughter of Nyx, perhaps a Titan in her own right she could be strife itself, many of the Titans were elemental or physical embodyments of ideals. For example Cronos Titan of time, Gaea Titan of earth, Erebus Titan of darkness. This Eris would be strife itself, true to itself i dont believe her to have an alignment. Stirfe although often considerd evil, can also lead to a stronger being. If anything i think she would be NN as strife does not care who it inflicts.

The otehr Eris would be Ares' sister and the daughter of Zeus and Hera. The olympians were far more human in nature, and delt more with magic and divine power then raw elements and ideals. This Eris would have more choice in personality. This was probably the one who threw in the apple and the Titan Eris was probably the one who had the children. This Eris, the daughter of zeus, is the one easiest to turn into a D&D goddess as she is more of a being and less of an ideal. However i would not call her evil, nor even chaotic.

In Greek mythology Chaos was the founding of everything. the god's sprung from chaos. however Chaos in greek mythology is more of a void then a collection of everything jumbles together, as is the modern understanding. For night to be born of chaos, as where the other titans, they became and in doing so destroyed what was chaos and it's void. As such Nyx and her daughter Eris, and zeus and his daughter eris would be the opposite of chaos. Eris is never related to chaos, only to strife, and strife is not necessarily chaotic. It occurs in the beucratic systems of law, in neutral and chaotic societies. Strife simply occurs, she is not lawful, neutral, evil, good, or chaotic. Unfortunatly D&D requires a classification. In this regard i would make her NN.
Adrez Nesnsid

Or there could just be one Eris with multiple personalities, bi-polar disorder, and/or PMS...

Classical Greek mythology may not have drawn a clear connection between Eris and the principle of chaos (even in the modern, rather than classical/mythological sense of the term), however, classical Roman mythology on the other hand, does make a clear connection with Eris and the concept of discord (cf. her Roman name: "Discordia"), which is generally accepted as being a form of chaos (in the modern, rather than classical/mythological sense of the term).

You know, the whole idea of there being a benign Eris and a vengeful Eris,, as well as the myth of the apple of discord could be viewed as metaphors for the second law of thermodynamics (And the corollaries to said law), or, rather, as an expression of the second law of thermodynamics written before thermodynamics was studied as a science.

Specifically, I am thinking of the way that overall entropy continually increases, and, more relevantly, the fact that in order to decrease entropy in one place, the entropy in another place must be increased (Which is in line with the Apple of Discord myth, in which not inviting the goddess of strife to a party on Mount Olympus, results in a war down on Earth. It is also in line with Eris' benevolent aspect, in which Eris, the goddess of strife is the motivating force which inspires people to go out and do things rather than just sit on their butts all day and do nothing and accomplish nothing (entropy must be introduced somewhere in order to create an ordered or organized system somewhere else).)

I'm a tad confused. Where in greek mythology is Eris represented as benevolent? Admittedly, there was a use of the word eris to mean zeal... "eris agathon." But the goddess wasn't the deity of zeal- she was the personification of STRIFE. Sure, Hesoid says that she keeps things moving, and that is good. And that is, but she herself isn't-- they move because they don't want other people to get ahead of them, not because they see others working and feel bad. It's self interest and greed, causes of strife.

I always see the Theogony, particularly the bits where night is giving birth to things, as metaphorical. Strife is the cause of all those things that are listed as the Children of Eris. Strife is the cause of a host of evils, and a BAD thing.

Likewise, when she is listed as the half-sister to Ares, the meaning is metaphorical as well as literal. She causes Strife, and Ares, the god of senseless violence and the bloody fray is closely tied to that in a metaphysical sense. Ares isn't a good thing in Greek Myth either- he's a brute, a bully, and a wuss, the opposite of Athena's style of War, which was pretty clearly seen as better. (One place where Mars and Ares are really different)

Maybe Discordia is different in Roman mythology, but knowing the love of order that the Romans as a society had, I somehow doubt it. I suspect that the modern day er... religion has a lot of influence on how people see Eris. (I was never clear on that group... sorry if I've offended anyone who takes it a bit more seriously, but I've never met anyone who did.)

I'm getting this info from the article about Eris on Wikipedia, which says that according to the ancient Greek poet Hesiod, who lived around 700 BC, there was not one Eris, but two, one of which could be viewed as benevolent:

In Hesiod's Works and Days 11–24, two different goddesses named Eris 'Strife' are distinguished:

SO you see, one version of Eris was considered somewhat benevolent even by the ancients because she was basically all that prevented people from sitting around all day and not doing anything worthwhile.

I think Eris could be interpreted in a number of different ways. I think she deserves a CN alignment, as that allows the greatest range of actions, and can encompass most everything she's done.

I know there was an Eris build on Dicefreaks, but the site's down at the moment, so I can't give a link... :'( I think they gave her rogue and barbarian levels. I personally think barbarian suits her well. Somehow her bipolar nature seems to suit a raging barbarian. :)

I love the thought of there being stats for Eris! My Bard's name is Eris, but not in relation to the actual goddess. Greek mythology is my specialty so I'll try to help! :ayyyy!:

Hmmm... where to start? First of all I think her holy symbol should be her infamous Golden Apple of Discord. I imagine her with dark, wild, slightly spikey hair, and green eyes that sparkle with mischief. I imagine her looking like a rebellious, slender young woman in dark, chaotic leather armor, and constantly playing with her Golden Apple.

I think her relationship with Ares is both as a younger sister and a devoted apprentice. She admires him for his wickedness and power, and follows him into battle to spread chaos in his wake. While Eris can be fiercely independent, she adores her big brother and knows that she can rely on him if she gets in a jam.

As far as alignments go, I think I'd go with Chaotic Evil or Chaotic Neutral. Since she often joins her brother in bloody warfare, and takes fiendish pleasure in disrupting the peace, I think Chaotic Evil fits her nicely.

Personality wise, I think Eris is rebellious and the essence of mischief, doing all she can to sew chaos among both mortals and gods, then watches her work while laughing with wicked, self-satisfation. She tries to appear confident, cool, and self-assured, but if things don't go her way she quickly looses her temper and throws a tantrum. If worst comes to worst, she quickly runs off to big brother Ares for protection.

Hmmm... that's all I can think of for now. Hope it helped! :D

PS: I think her favored weapon (besides the Golden Apple of Discord) should be a whip, spiked chain, or dagger.

Speaking of the Church of the SubGenius (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_of_the_SubGenius), the Church of the SubGenius presents a third view of Eris that is different from either a direct Discordian OR Classical view, being a sort of combination of the Classical interpretation, the Discordian interpretation, and various themes from the Cthulhu Mythos.

Eris seems to be the Greek goddess not only of strife but of evil itself, one of the daughters of the goddess Night (Nyx). Her children are a rather unpleasant brood of demons: Starvation, Quarrels, Murder, Slaughter, Lies, Pain, Lawlessness, Oath-breaking and Evil-delusion. All the various aspects of discord. I imagine the Greek word eris was a little more malevolent sounding than the English "strife." Eris was also a war-goddess but with a taste for aimless bloodshed and destruction.

Here is a nice description of her from theoi.com's page on Eris in classical literature (http://www.theoi.com/Daimon/Eris.html):

"To one place Eris drew them all, the fearful Battle-queen, beheld of none, but cloaked in clouds blood-raining: on she stalked swelling the mighty roar of battle, now rushed through Troy's squadrons, through Akhaia's now; Phobos (Fear) and Deimos (Terror) still waited on her steps to make their father's [Ares'] sister glorious. From small to huge that Fury's stature grew; her arms of adamant were blood-besprent, the deadly lance she brandished reached the sky. Earth quaked beneath her feet: dread blasts of fire flamed from her mouth: her voice pealed thunder-like kindling strong men."

I would class her as Chaotic evil, and place her in Tartarus along with her fiendish children. Her worshippers would be evil warriors and machiavellian politicians. I can well imagine her as the patron goddess of an emperor like Nero!

Her sister Lyssa (Mad Rage) would also make an interesting goddess.

What I don't get about the golden apple myth, is why would the gods not invite Eris to the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, when they supposedly invited "all of the other gods and goddesses", (theoretically) including:

Ares- god of war, with a clear bent towards unnecessary wars and senseless violence
Dionysus- Likely to get drunk and trash the place (like he and his followers did in Thrace and Macedonia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dionysus)
Hermes- The messanger of the gods was also a kleptomaniac and the god of thieves, according to some myths (Wikipedia Article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermes))

She was also the goddess of marital discord, so her presence at the wedding would have been a particulary bad omen.
There is another myth that she was around at the marriage of Tereus and Procne, and their marriage was a mess: Tereus raped Procne's sister and cut out her tongue so she could not tell ; then the two sisters chopped up his son and fed it to him at a banquet. Marital strife can be pretty dangerous in Greek myth!

Here's my write-up of Eris for a homebrew campaign where she serves the role of evil goddess of chaos and battle:

Name: Eris
Gender: f
Rank: Lesser Deity
Portfolio: War, Wanton Destruction, Blind Rage
Titles: Matron of Battle, Mother of Man
Holy Symbol: Battle axe
Alignment: Chaotic evil
Core Worshippers: Humans
Common Worshippers: Others
Uncommon Worshippers:
Favored Weapon(s): Battle axe
Domains: Chaos, Destruction, Evil, Madness, Strength, War
Special Notes:
Description: Eris is depicted as a raven-haired warrior woman of exceptional beauty with a pair of black-feathered wings sprouting from her back. She enters battle wearing black full plate armor and wielding a battle axe in each hand. Given to fits of bloodlust, she is worshipped by those who seek glory through battle and revel in the destruction of others. For this reason, she is known as both the Matron of Battle and Mother of Man, for it is believed that she fosters and encourages men to give way to their natural, violent proclivities.

The above is in the form used by the Living Greyhawk Campaign, since the gods never really make direct appearances in my games.

She's not exactly like the mytho-historical Eris, but definitely inspired by her. Really a combination of Eris and Ares.

As one person noted... "Hey! I found squirrels!" could be a Discordian motto. Or warcry. Or holy proclamation.

Honestly, being a Discordian Episkopos, I tend to be amused at attempts to stat Eris according to the Greek legends - they really don't have any gods who're truly good, just some slightly less destructive, vain, jealous, and petty than the rest.

I mean, the book is a genuine work of comedic art, but sometimes some people tend to get a little bit crazy and start violating one of the biggest parts of "discordianism"... never believe anything you read.

Either they're mindless zealots following an obviously fake but hilarious mescaline-inspired hippie religion, or they don't know what irony is. Whcih, when you think about it, is really rather discordian...

I take it as a comedic fact and a serious hoax.

Actually, I just see it as a good philosophy - life itself is too short to take seriously, and the whole thing is a fantastic game. The rules are unknown, the scorecard is hidden, and the game designer left the building once the finishing touches were put on it. And as a whole it certainly makes at least as much sense as any other Holy Book that's ever been pushed by anyone.

As for how serious I actually am... Well, that's something people have been trying to figure out for years.

Speaking of which, If I started a D20 SubGenius thread, do you think that anybody would respond to it?

And, here are some of the kind of things that would appear on such a thread:

New SubGenius Feats:

Short Duration Personal Saviours
Benefit: Once every 9 days and 53 minutes (13013 minutes) you can gain a +2 bonus on one saving throw. Additionally, for the purposes of meeting prestige class requirements, using relics, and so forth, you can emulate feats such as "thrall to demon", "Knight of the Stars", "Favored of the COmpanions", "Scion of Sorrow", "True Believer", et cetera. You can only emulate only ONE of these feats, as it applies to only ONE deity or paragon outsider (or whatever) at a time. (so, for example, you couldn't use a relic of Boccob or Kord while your ShortDurationPersonalSavior is Grazzt). You can switch between Short Duration Personal Saviors under three conditions: 1.) If you suffer a critical failure while using an ability associated with your current short Duration Personal Savior, 2.) If you recieve an Atonement Spell, or 3.) If you spend an hour in meditation, while on the toilet.

Acubeating [Fighter]
Prerequisites:[/b] Base Attack Bonus +5, Wisdom or Dexterity 13+
[u]Benefits: You may use an attack roll with a blunt instrument at a -2 penalty in place of a Heal check, with the results of the attack roll counting as the result of the heal check. If you are using an unarmed strike OR if you are using a weapon that deals lethal damage for use with this feat, you must take an additional -4 penalty to your roll, or else you either accomplish nothing from using the feat (in the case of unarmed strikes) or else you deal 1d8 (maybe just 1d6?) points of non-lethal damage to your patient (in the case of lethal bludgeoning weapons). Using this ability is a full round action and it only works on unarmored (and/or lightly armored??) creatures/patients. A fighter may take this feat as a bonus feat.

I have no idea where people get this thing of her being blond, aside from cartoons. It's inaccurate as far as the Greeks go, and I don't know that there's a basis for it in Discordianism. Some portrayals of the goddess in ancient art:

Like I said before, you still need to take into account what Hesiod said in works and days. Additionally, in the Illiad, the actual Trojan War itself was clearly under the jurisdiction of Ares and Pallas Athene, not Eris. Furthermore, taken to its logical extreme, social discord is actually counterproductive to any sort of war efforts; How can a war be properly waged if there is dissention among the ranks, or (in an even more extreme possibility) if the senate (or whatever sort of council, or royal family, or military dictator and attendant generals rules a given land) comes to blows just deciding whether war should be declared (or in the case of expansionist military dictatorships, against whom war should be declared)......

Here is a version of her sister Nemesis that I wrote up for a homebrew campaign. I think in the myths Nemesis was a bit nicer than I make her sound, but I needed an evil deity.

NEMESIS
Marshall of Furies, The Kindly One
Lesser Goddess
Symbol: Sword within a circle
Alignment: Lawful Evil
Portfolio: Vengeance, fury, destruction, law
Worshipers: Politicians, judges, warriors, oppressed people, revenge-seekers
Cleric Alignments: LE, LN, NE

Nemesis appears as a beautiful human woman with dark hair. Her dark eyes smolder with rage. Nemesis is twin to her sister Eris, but is distinguished by her black feathered wings. She wears a breastplate and greaves. She wields a longsword in one hand and a flail in the other. She carries scales that never balance. She is generally accompanied by three powerful Erinyes named Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone.

Nemesis is the daughter of Nyx and Erebus. She punishes the maleficent and the prideful without regard for compassion or proportion. She sometimes assists other gods of all alignments in meting out punishment to deserving victims, though she is not especially careful about whom she targets.

Dogma

Justice must be swift and final. The ends justify the means. Repay loyalty with loyalty, betrayal with betrayal, and oath-breaking with vengeance. Pride, even just pride in noble accomplishments, is an offense against the gods. The proud must be destroyed. Laws should be draconian or else they are useless. The best revenge is that which the victim never sees coming.

Clergy and Temples

Nemesis is feared, not loved. Nevertheless, her worshippers and clergy are tolerated in most human cities. Her clergy have a knack for pointing out hypocrisy and vice in others, which earns them scorn and prestige in equal measure. Whenever possible, clergy of Nemesis seek to obtain political power in the communities they inhabit, twisting existing systems of government to their own advantage.
