| Gloomweave02-25-08, 02:40 PM | Can you go ethreal on the plane of shadow? I will be running an adventure on the plane of shadow and have a ninja in the group. He has this ethreal jaunt ability that has been very usefull for him in past adventures. But I'm wondering if it works on the plane of shadow. Any thoughts? |
| M-bark02-25-08, 02:51 PM | You could reason that since both are Transitive planes connected to the Material Plane, he could use it. However, I am not sure if according to the rules (be it RAW or RAI) it is possible. |
| Naderion02-25-08, 03:30 PM | I think the cosmologies in the DMG and MotP both say that the plane of shadow and etheral planes don't touch each other. But nothing stops a DM from having the planes in his campaign do so. |
| Urithair02-27-08, 06:52 PM | The Shadow plane now connects all planes and possible multiverses so the answer is 'it depends'. If you are on the plane of shadow where it overlaps the material plane, then yes. The plane of shadow would also overlap the ethereal itself, so that would be another instance. However, pretty much anywhere else it wouldn't work. From the inner elemental planes to the outer planes you are SOL. |
| Gloomweave02-27-08, 07:07 PM | The Ethreal plane description in the Manual of the Planes says that it is coexistant with the material plane and often other planes as well. It says nothing more on what other planes. Urithair, if the shadow plane now connects all planes then I'm thinking you could go ethreal on the plane of shadow. Where does it say that about connecting all planes? |
| Shemeska the Marauder02-27-08, 07:30 PM | Per the 3.x depiction of the Plane of Shadow, it overlaps the Prime Material, and is coexistant with the Astral. It does not directly touch any of the inner or outer planes, and does not touch the Ethereal. It potentially connects to alternate prime material planes (whatever that means, given the terms's grossly inconsistant use in 3.x), or alternate cosmologies (again, whatever that means, since WotC never defined it properly). That said, given that the plane of shadow was originally a (effectively infinite) demiplane within the deep ethereal (within in and out of game history), I don't particularly see the rationale of having it not connect to the ethereal. That decision seems entirely based on the game mechanics of 3e, and how they wanted spell effects to work, not based on the history of and nature of the plane of shadow. |
| Urithair02-27-08, 08:08 PM | I know there are conflicting reports but I thought that after Die Vecna Die the Shadow Plane became a Major Transitive that connected to all planes? |
| Shemeska the Marauder02-28-08, 01:45 AM | I know there are conflicting reports but I thought that after Die Vecna Die the Shadow Plane became a Major Transitive that connected to all planes? That wasn't one of the planar changes listed at the end of DVD (none of which actually resemble any of the 2e->3e changes). |
| Surat0102-28-08, 10:53 PM | I wouldn't think that they cross, but since shadow spells function in Ravenloft (demiplane on the Ethereal) (both in 2nd edition and the D20 Sword and Sorcery material), you could argue that it does work. |
| Jaxgaret02-28-08, 11:52 PM | I wouldn't think that they cross, but since shadow spells function in Ravenloft (demiplane on the Ethereal) (both in 2nd edition and the D20 Sword and Sorcery material), you could argue that it does work. You have a point, Clanner scum. |
| Gloomweave02-29-08, 05:37 PM | I will probly let it work. The group is going in a little under powered for the adventure. Is Die Vecna die a novel? |
| Jaxgaret03-08-08, 03:54 AM | Is Die Vecna die a novel? It's German for "The Vecna, the". An honorary term. ;) |
| Naderion03-08-08, 12:02 PM | It's an AD&D adventure. |
