Ok, we were having a discussion this past week before we played. One of my players is playing a cleric, and his god (Shaundaker, spelling?) uses a great sword. So, he took his starting area so he would get the background MW greatsword. As we were beginning to get ready to play, another guy says "Hey, which domains do you have? You only get to use the favored weapon if you have the war domain."

I guess my question is, do you only get the favored weapon prof if you have the war domain, or is it given for any domains? I know that if you take the war domain, you get weapon focus as a bonus feat.

As DM, I have no problem allowing him to use the favored weapon, but I want to try and keep the rules lawyer happy/content as well.

Clerics are only proficient with simple weapons, unless they take the Martial Weapon Proficiency feat or use the War Domain. If he doesn't take either option, he can still use the weapon, but with a -4 penalty on attack rolls.

From the SRD:
Weapon and Armor Proficiency

Clerics are proficient with all simple weapons, with all types of armor (light, medium, and heavy), and with shields (except tower shields).

A cleric who chooses the War domain receives the Weapon Focus feat related to his deity’s weapon as a bonus feat. He also receives the appropriate Martial Weapon Proficiency feat as a bonus feat, if the weapon falls into that category.

By RAW, you only get the free proficiency if you have the War domain.

If he's human, he should simply take a level fighter. This way he can get Weapon Focus (greatsword), soo.
