Perhaps this has been done before, but has anyone thought about a faction (or somesuch) in Planescape who claim that beliefs do not have any effect on reality except through materialistic, non-supernatural chains of cause and effect? (e.g., my belief that a sandwich is tasty causing the objective effect of my ordering a andwich)

Of course, in Planescape, they're simply wrong, but paradoxically, that also makes them right. In spite of themselves, their beliefs alter reality, which might make the effect of belief (other than their own) weaker where they're concentrated.

It's a bit like the Athar, but instead of just denying divinity, they deny Planescape's belief-morphic nature, not by any normative claim that the world shouldn't work that way, but just by claiming that everyone else is delusional and that it actually doesn't work that way. After all, for them, the world actually doesn't respond to belief -- except that it does and they're just not aware of it, because their beliefs negate reality's belief-morphic nature.

Meh. I found it mildly entertaining. Kinda gimmicky, I admit, and perhaps not worth thinking about extensively, but could be entertaining for a cameo or somesuch.

I see a good opportunity to caricature the works of Ayn Rand here.
