| HamHam03-04-07, 01:08 PM | In the FCI there's a section about traveling between the different layers. However, the FCII doesn't really have much about how to get from one layer to the next. So how does one travel from layer to layer? Teleport? Planeshift? Gates? The Styx? |
| ripvanwormer03-04-07, 07:08 PM | Teleport won't work unless you have an army controlling the layer in question (or else the tanar'ri would be able to teleport directly into Nessus). The only way to get to deeper layers of Baator is through portals or the River Styx, which are both heavily guarded. |
| Darth Syntax03-04-07, 07:14 PM | I would recommend dead Roman poets myself. |
| Melpomene03-04-07, 08:02 PM | Depends too on what level you're travelling from and where you're going to. IIRC there is only one gate into Nessus (guarded by 666 spiked devils) but an increasingly large number of portals to the other realms. the Styx can reach any layer but is guarded both by the tactical guardians of Hell as well as the natural, balance-keeping forces of the river (such as it's soul-rending, madness causing agents and the massive Styx Dragons). In either event, you're unlikely to make your way in through a show of force unless you have a rather massive army. However, travellers in small numbers end up in the lower levels of Hell for all sorts of reasons. |
| crimsonwolf03-04-07, 08:35 PM | whats so speacial about nessus? is that adromis plane? |
| ripvanwormer03-04-07, 08:56 PM | whats so speacial about nessus? is that adromis plane? Yes, that's Asmodeus's layer. |
| Bob the Efreet03-05-07, 03:43 AM | So how does one travel from layer to layer? You don't. At least, not if the Baatezu have anything to say about it. Which they usually do. |
| HamHam03-05-07, 11:37 AM | You don't. At least, not if the Baatezu have anything to say about it. Which they usually do. What if you had the appropriate papers? Are there basically portals on each layer leading up and down? |
| Melpomene03-05-07, 12:03 PM | What if you had the appropriate papers? Are there basically portals on each layer leading up and down? If you're invited, you get an armed escort and a long march. Portals and by ship. |
| The Serge703-05-07, 12:46 PM | Depends too on what level you're travelling from and where you're going to. IIRC there is only one gate into Nessus (guarded by 666 spiked devils) but an increasingly large number of portals to the other realms. It's actually gelugons/ice devils, and I think the number's 999. the Styx can reach any layer but is guarded both by the tactical guardians of Hell as well as the natural, balance-keeping forces of the river (such as it's soul-rending, madness causing agents and the massive Styx Dragons). I don't know about styx dragons serving the interests of Hell, as they're NE, but you're probably referring to the amnizu and xerfilstyx devils when you say "agents." |
| The Serge703-05-07, 12:48 PM | What if you had the appropriate papers? Are there basically portals on each layer leading up and down? This depends upon the Lord of the Nine in question. Asmodeus -- for example -- never issues papers, although he may call folks to court. |
| oracle7103-05-07, 02:25 PM | I think it's actually 9,999 gelugons. And IIRC, in 2E's Guide to Hell, it says that there is one small tributary of the Styx that enters Nessus, but that is guarded by an army of cornugons. |
| Melpomene03-05-07, 06:07 PM | Asmodious has enough clout to blow off Hextor if he wants to. And he wants to a lot. So, even being a god doesn't mean you get to see Ruby Rod at his home. |
| Bluehero03-05-07, 06:23 PM | Can't you plane shift between the layers? |
| Witch03-05-07, 06:36 PM | Can't you plane shift between the layers? It's the same plane. |
| Raymond_Luxury_Yacht03-05-07, 11:10 PM | You can get to the first 8 layers from the outside of the plane with the appropriate tuning fork, IIRC. Not entirely sure, though. |
| ripvanwormer03-06-07, 03:18 AM | You can get to the first 8 layers from the outside of the plane with the appropriate tuning fork, IIRC. Not entirely sure, though. You can get into any layer if you know the right tuning fork for it (at least, that's the system I use). However, the forks for the layers below Minauros are kept secret, and the Lords of the Nine can change the requirements at will. It's a matter of finding the right combination of metal and tuning. In Dragon #120, Avernus was accessible with an F-sharp fork made of iron; Dis was F-sharp major, and Minauros was F-sharp minor. The others are unknown. |
| AngelofCthulhu03-06-07, 01:19 PM | I would recommend dead Roman poets myself. Give yourself a cookie. To get through Hell you need to do one of these: 1) There are direct connections between planes (although there is a small connection between 1 and 3) You just have to get past the guardian on those. 2) Planeshift off Baator and planeshift back on. 3) Get captured and dragged to that layer. 4) Take the heavily guarded river Styx. |
| sciborg203-08-07, 03:27 AM | Don't listen to any of the other posters. Passage through Hell is simple -- just follow the Path of Arthas. Start at Ribcage and take on the sin of each layer, going deeper and deeper. Recall your sins and do not regret but embrace them all. Lust for the chance to commit each one again and again and you will descend as gently as a snowflake even unto Nessus. In fact, its a little known secret that if you embrace the layer completely, you can walk into Malsheem past the pitfiends, the maze of its corridors subtly marking you. You come to the throne of Asmodeus, and look on the face of the Dark Prince. He rises and stands aside as you reach the final step on the dias upon which rests the throne. He hands you his ruby rod with deceptively gentle smile and walks away from the Mutliverse to follow Lucifer and Satan as you sit down and hear a voice older than any devil, the voice of the Light Eaters, whisper: "Now, we are one" |

| ryryguy03-09-07, 04:56 PM | Is this tuning fork thing just for going to specific layers, or is it a general plane shift thing? By any chance, does it allow you to shift to a more accurate location rather than the 30-300 mile distance? |
