This is mostly in response to questions in a previous thread on the What's a Player to Do? forum. But if you wish, feel free to critique and add your thoughts.

St. Mara
Titles: Lady of the Shield, the Guardian, the Shield Maiden, the Martyr
Symbol: sword wreathed in flames upon a shield
Home Plane: Celestial/Elysium
Alignment: Lawful Good
Portfolio: courage, honor, sacrifice, good, mercy
Domains: Good, Protection, Glory, Mysticism
Favored Weapon: Bastard sword
Dogma: Followers of St. Mara believe that to give one's life for another or cause is the pinnacle of good, and feel that in order for Good to prevail, one must be ready to make this sacrifice at any time. More concerned with the protection of the weak and innocent, and the defense of one's home than crusades and actively seeking evil out, followers of St. Mara are usually the first to respond to aid against invasion or attacks by the forces of Evil. However, they understand that sometimes, the best defense is an offense, which is why they wield the bastard sword, capable of being used as an offensive weapon with two hands, and yet, requires special training and dedication to be used in a manner which keeps with the faith's doctrine and goal, with blade and shield.

Sounds partly similar to Ilmater. If you use this deity in your campaign, too, you could make St. Mara one of his paladin-martyrs rewarded with divinity.
If there is no Ilmater, you should find some interesting things to salvage from him.

IMC, the god of noble sacrifice is dead. He nobly sacrificed himself, you see. :D
