| Devil Gnasher09-14-07, 12:18 AM | "Necro" is ancient Greek for death or corpse while "mantia" is ancient Greek for divination. All together it's called necromantia. The Anglicanized spelling of this word is necromancy. Therefore classical necromancy would have dealt strictly with speaking to dead or mystical attempts at forensic pathology. From that humble origin fictional necromancy could be extended to magical healing, undead creation/destruction, genetic manipulation, biorganic shields and causing harm to the living. My goal is to start a list of core and non-core deities whom, by my difinition serve as suitable patrons of the necromantic arts whether Good, Neutral or Evil. If anyone has any more submissions please post them in this thread. Good 1. Pelor 2. Mordain 3. Osiris Neutral 1. Wee Jas 2. Kelemvor 3. Jergul 4. Urdlen 5. Anubis Evil 1. Vecna 2. Nerull 3. Velsharoon 4. the Keeper 5. Hel 6. Falazure God-like beings Good Neutral Evil 1. Orcus |
| MrSpaceBear09-14-07, 02:01 AM | Kelemvor, Judge of the Damed, LN Death god of Faerun Jergul, the Uncareing, N Death god of faerun Also I think Hades is in a D&D book of gods. |
| Lord Mortanius09-14-07, 04:21 AM | Velsharoon; NE Faerunian demipower; liches, necromancy, necromancers, undeath; Gehenna/Mungoth/Death's Embrace. Orcus; CE Abyssal Prince/Lesser Power; undeath, hatred, necromancy; Abyss/113th. Kelemvor is very unsuitable. |
| zook1shoe66609-14-07, 12:38 PM | check out the Libris Mortis, they have a BUNCH of undead deities from Good, Neutral and Evil. |
| Fabius Maximus09-14-07, 12:48 PM | Velsharoon; NE Faerunian demipower; liches, necromancy, necromancers, undeath; Gehenna/Mungoth/Death's Embrace. Orcus; CE Abyssal Prince/Lesser Power; undeath, hatred, necromancy; Abyss/113th. Kelemvor is very unsuitable. Well, he wanted gods of every alignment that fit. Kelemvor is one. There are necromancy spells for destroying undead. I'd like to add Urdlen, the FR halfling god of death. He's LN, IIRC. And there is the Keeper (NE) from Eberron, who likes to keep the souls from going to the endless boredom of the plane of Dolurrh. |
| The_Shaman09-24-07, 08:54 AM | Actually, Kelemvor's followers include some necromancers. Speaking to the dead is perfectly okay with him. However, animating them can get you in huge trouble with the lord of the crystal tower. BTW, I think Jergal is LN as well. What else... I think Sehanine is the elven goddess of the dead, so technically necromancy would be under her purview. AFAIK she's the one that deals with the Baelnorn, too. |
| Naderion09-24-07, 10:04 AM | In 2nd Ed. all healing spells were of the necromancy school which makes sense, since its about the handling of life-force, not about death. |
| Fabius Maximus09-24-07, 10:06 AM | Jergal is LE, I believe. |
| zook1shoe66609-24-07, 10:11 AM | Jergal is LE, I believe. he is LN in the books..... but i would say has LE tendencies |
| DwarfPcfan09-24-07, 10:18 AM | Here's a few more that bear mentionning: -Osiris egyptian, god of the dead, the offering fields and jugement -Anubis, egyptian god of mummification, death and lore -Hel, Norse goddess of the underworld |
| General_Ridley09-24-07, 12:16 PM | Falazure, Dragon God of death and undeath (LE, IIRC) |
| Andyr09-25-07, 10:59 AM | he is LN in the books..... but i would say has LE tendencies During the Netherese Empire he was LE, but he is now LN. I think perhaps his alignment shifted when he gave his power to the Dead Three. |
| MrSpaceBear09-26-07, 11:40 PM | Jergal actualy serves Kelemvor now as the notery and scribe of the dead, and since Kelemvor is a young god, Jergal advises him. I think thats why Jergals alighnment changed, he just settled down for retirement. |
| Andyr09-27-07, 01:19 PM | Jergal also served Cyric and Myrkul during their times as Lord of the Dead, and as Myrkul reigned for a (comparatively) long time I imagine he got fairly good at it (i.e. it would be as much service as advice). |
| hellgrammite0012-02-07, 11:42 AM | How does Jergal feel about raising the dead? I know Kelemvor hates it, and only allows minimal control of the undead (if its serving the greater good). But from what I read Jergal is a bit more lacked when it comes to raising the dead. What are you guys opinions. I am starting a new Cleric character, and want some reanimate dead abilites while not being or worshiping evil (the DM doesnt not want evil characters this time). Jergal seems neutral with some evil tendencies so I may be able to follow him. IF that doesnt work, do you guys know any good/neutral guys that allow for raising the dead. (has to be somebody) |

Urdlen? That's the CE gnome god of greed, bloodlust, evil, hatred, uncontrolled impulse and spriggans (The one who looks like a giant mole). I think you're reffering to Urogalan, who is indeed LN. |
