The other day, I was sitting at my desk with Complete Divine, a C programming textbook, and a glass of something mildly alcoholic. One thing led to another, and after a few hours I discovered that I had just written a little program that generated domains for a deity.

I amused myself for a good long time by generating deities and trying to figure out just how the Halfling, Scalykind, and Time domains might fit together. Thinking up fluff for some of them was both fun and thought-provoking. Then I had another idea: why not let you all give it a try?

So, to that end, I've generated a bunch of random deities. All you have to do is pick one and write out some fluff for it.

Here they are (those already done are hyperlinked):

Ilrain, LG intermediate god of Knowledge, Suffering, Undead, Magic (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14318751&postcount=1)
CN lesser god of Mind, Life, Feast, Creation
LN demigod of Illusion, Competition, Tyrant, Madness
Zathka, CG demigod god of Destiny, Spider, Force, Pleasure (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14337874&postcount=9)
Yiggur, NG intermediate god of Spirit, Dragon Below, Dream, Slime (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14337532&postcount=8)
NE greater god of Pact, Air, Retribution, Courage
CE lesser god of Cavern, Travel, Spell, Repose
LG intermediate god of Shadow, Storm, Balance, Purification
Mienrou, LN demigod of Charm, Dwarf, Drow, Balance (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14333230&postcount=6)
LG greater god of Earth, Glory, Charm, Air
LN greater god of Exorcism, Necromancy, Celestial, Slime
CN greater god of Community, Craft, Fey, Moon
CN lesser god of Celestial, Force, Creation, Competition
Diskern, NE greater god of Moon, Mind, Orc, Shadow (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14328716&postcount=3)
N lesser god of Inquisition, Force, Halfling, Water
TN greater god of Deathless, Retribution, Air, Suffering
CG intermediate god of Deathless, Purification, Truth, Oracle
CE intermediate god of Sun, Dream, Pact, Scalykind

I've taken the first one to use as an example. The name is randomly generated, too.

Ilrain
The Eternal Martyr, The Brightshade, Zombie Jesus
Intermediate Deity, Lawful Good
Symbol: A black wand.
Portfolio: Martyrdom, magic, wisdom, good-aligned undead
Clergy Alignments: Any good
Domains: Law, Good, Knowledge, Suffering, Undead, Magic
Favored Weapon: Quarterstaff

Ilrain was originally a more conventional god of magic, similar to Boccob of Oerth's pantheon. However, all that changed when a god of death attempted to slay the entire rest of the pantheon and wrest control for himself, by opening a massive rift to the Negative Energy plane. Before it could engulf the world, Ilrain selflessly threw himself into the rift to seal it, saving the other gods at the cost of his own life. However, the negative energy didn't just kill him: it infused his deific essence, tainting it utterly with darkness. Ilrain arose as a nightshade, a powerful undead; however, his mind was still intact, and as holy as it had always been. He retook his place as the god of magic, though his nature was forever altered.

Ilrain is usually depicted as a tall, shadow-shrouded man with jet-black skin and a kindly look on his face. He espouses asceticism in the pursuit of magical power, as well as using magic to aid the less fortunate. Tolerance, especially of nonevil undead, is another major tenet. Temples to him are common, and often house wizards and monks in addition to clerics. Ilrain's clergy includes many multiclass wizards. It is frowned upon for his priests to seek to become undead themselves, as most intelligent undead have natural evil alignments. Nonevil undead are welcomed to the ranks, however; many temples have at least one vampire cleric. Truly devoted followers often donate their bodies for use as skeletons or zombies after their death.

Ilrain's herald is a nightcrawler. His planar allies include xeg-yi, devourers, and nightwings.

That's cool (both the program and the god that you fleshed out; I'm glad to see others who agree that undead can be good and that deathless are teh suck).

I'll stat out one of the gods on the list sometime in the next few days.

The following seem very interesting. Unfortunately, I don't have any good ideas for them...

CG demigod god of Destiny, Spider, Force, and Pleasure
NE greater god of Pact, Air, Retribution, and Courage
CE lesser god of Cavern, Travel, Spell, Repose
CN greater god of Community, Craft, Fey, Moon

I think I might be able to do the next to last one. (Sorry, I don't have a convenient way to randomly generate the name.)

Diskern
Lunar Eye, Watcher at Night, Gloom Deceiver
Greater Deity, Neutral Evil
Symbol: A crescent moon embracing a half-closed eye
Portfolio: Orcs, night, rumors, lies, shapeshifters
Clergy Alignments: Any evil
Domains: Evil, Moon, Mind, Orc, Shadow
Favored Weapon: Crossbow

Long ago, while Gruumsh was plotting against the Elven gods, Diskern offered to prepare for the battle by gathering intelligence. The next night, he transformed himself into a rat in order to sneak into the Elven deities' domain undetected. He crawled through the shadows, under the brush, and among the roots. He listened to whispered secrets and examined hidden documents. Just before morning, he discovered that a banquet was being prepared. He went to where it was being prepared, to poison the food, but he was spotted and cornered before he could accopmlish anything. He returned to his natural form and tried to fight his way out, but he was unable to overcome the Elven deities by himself. The next night, Diskern was able to escape and return to Gruumsh with many valuable secrets, but it was too late to attack while the Elven deities were occupied by the banquet.

Diskern is usually depicted as a short, wiry, hairy orc with a long nose, broad incisors, tough, pointed fingernails, and thick eyebrows that have grown together, shrouded in a filthy brown cloak stained with blood at the hem. Very rarely, he is depicted as a wererat in hybrid form. Though he is as bloodthirsty as the next Orc deity, he promotes subtlety and decpetion as weapons more powerful than any blade. He teaches that there is a time for violence and a time for guile, and that a wise warrior will recognize which tactic is most efficient. He encourages alliances with evil shapechangers, such as wererats, werewolves, and seawolves, and the slaughter of good shapechangers, such as werebears. Though he promotes the expansion of Orc territory and the extermination of the enemies of the Orc race, his followers are careful not to damage wilderness areas or over-hunt prey. He openly welcomes half-Orc worshippers, whom his clergy actively recruit, because half-orcs can more easily infiltrate human civilization in order to find weaknesses to exploit. In addition to Clerics and Adepts, his church includes Druids, Rangers, and Rogues among its servants. There are no temples dedicated to him, although his shrines and altars appear near Orcish hunting trails, in Orcish Druidic circles, and occasionally in temples to other Orcish deities. In Faerun, Diskern is a close ally of Malar.

His herald is a level 18 Orc Wererat Ranger. (Unfortunately, I'm not familiar enough with monsters to suggest Allies... I'm open to suggestions though.)

Yay! I looked at this for the longest time and I finally figured one out!
(By the way, I'd also like that program.)

Mienrou
Eternal Paradox, Self-Enemy, Joiner of Foes
Lawful Neutral, Demigod
Symbol: A bearded drow elf
Portfolio: Dwarves, drow, coexistance
Clergy: dwarves, drow rebels (not named Drizz't), mediators
Domains: Charm, Drow, Dwarf, Balance
Favored Weapon: Ranseur

Mienrou came into existance spontaneously when a group of drow and dwarves, mortal enemies, were trapped together in the underdark after a cave-in. By showing them their similarities and helping them to thrive in their situation, the mere thought of a godling quickly ascended into a being of reverence in the community, especially among the half-breeds that eventually came into being. After the people managed to get out after a few generations, they spread Mienrou's gospel to as many as they could, with limited results. However, people who have to bring hostile individuals together on a regular basis have taken Mienrou to heart, as his tales of balance and cooperation are an inspiration to many, but known by few.

Mienrou appears as an average height drow with a long, flowing beard. Though his appearance is a bit disarming, he is quite peaceful and will tell his tales to anyone who will look past his origins and listen.

Because of the demanding racial deities of his main followers, Mienrou has too few followers to warrant heralds in the deific hierarchy.

Great stuff! Both are awesome.

The program itself is pretty bad. Really hastily made. Unbelieveably inefficient. I'd like to try and clean it up before I send it off to everybody. PM me with your email addresses if you want it when its ready, though.

Here are some name generators I like:

http://rinkworks.com/namegen/

I've added three more deities to the list. I'm working on the NG intermediate god of Spirit, Mentalism, Dragon Below, Dream, and Slime right now; expect it up in an hour or two.

Oh, and don't forget that gods get their alignment as domains, too. The one I'm working on, for instance, gets the Good domain as well as Spirit, Mentalism, etc.

Yiggur
The Joybringer, The Core
NG intermediate god
Symbol: The Earth, with a large greyish mass at the centre.
Portfolio: altruism, happiness, dreams, slimes, children
Clergy Alignments: LG, NG, CG, N
Domains: Good, Spirit, Mentalism, Dragon Below, Dream, and Slime
Favored Weapon: Sap

Once upon a time, something awoke at the heart of the world. It wasn't quite sure what it was, nor why it had awoken, nor anything else at all. It decided to find out what was. It reached out and touched a person's mind. The person was happy; it did not know what happiness was, except that this person's happiness made it feel good. It touched another mind. This one was unhappy, and it caused it pain to feel the mind's sadness. It patted the mind, to cheer it up, so that it would not be sad, and the mind was relieved. It felt the goodness of this mind's happiness, and understood what was. It reached out across space to the minds of others, and spread the happiness which felt so good to it.

Yiggur (as it came to be known) is a god of simple desires and simple creed. It and its clerics exist only to spread happiness throughout the world. Yiggur prefers the pure and simple joys of good food, friends, and relaxation, though all pleasures can serve it. Its temples are nearly nonexistent, and its clerics are rare; many are itinerant healers and entertainers. Occasionally a cleric might stay in one place for some time to try to understand some joy previously unknown to him; for instance, one might stay at a university and learn from those whose greatest pleasure is mathematics, or follow a barbarian who takes innocent delight in battle.

Yiggur's herald is a 36-HD NG sentient ethereal ooze whose acid attack has been replaced by a poison which causes pleasant sensations and 1d6 Wis damage initial and secondary. Yigur's allies include NG sentient shadow jellies, ethereal oozes, and arcane oozes.

CG demigod god of Destiny, Spider, Force, and Pleasure

Zahtka
Host of the Unborn, Weaver of Destiny
Demigod, Chaotic Good
Symbol: A stylized, purple spider.
Portfolio: sex, childbirth, heroes, destiny
Clergy Alignments: CG, NG, and CN
Domains: Destiny, Spider, Force, Pleasure
Favored Weapon: Scimitar.

An ancient demigod of uncertain origins, Zahtka is a revered as a minor diety in nearly every nonevil faith that exists. Primitive cultures worship him as an animistic spirit; a spider god who carries an eggsack (representing fecundity) and is often portrayed killing a mosquito (representing triumph over evil). In more advanced civilizations, he/she is usually depicted as an androgynous (but still somehow sensual) humanoid in a midwife's garb with a spider perched on his/her shoulder. In particular, Zahkta is the patron of midwives, intellectuals, and adventurers.

According to most legends, Zahtka is a matchmaker and midwife for the good dieties, advising them in marriage and delivering newborn godlings. Although not very important in any pantheon, Zahtka is known even among the gods for his/her wisdom and foresight; it is said that Zahtka is a master manipulator, whose longsighted and subtle schemes help keep those of Asmodeus in check. Zahtka's avatars walk the world often in disguise, manipulating people to produce and raise great heroes to deal with situations that will not come about for several decades yet.

Zahtka is a great friend of Kord (or a similar diety in your world), as both of them see the merit in creating or encouraging heroic mortal champions. He/she is also beloved by the gods of love and fertility, as love and sexuality (both seperately and together) are things he/she encourages. Zahtka's home is in the Positive Energy Plane, and is said to resemble a massive spiderweb made of force energy, whose strands can manipulate the thoughts and actions of anyone.

In addition to his frequent use of avatars, zahkta is represented by a powerful aranea herald. His planar allies include celestial araneas and arachnal guardinals.

Thanks. Glad to know you liked it.

I was looking through Deities and Demigods and considering statting him out using those rules, because I like him a good deal myself.

By the way, does anyone know where I can find the Shadow domain? It doesn't seem to be in the Spell Compendium.

I know, I saw them when you first put them up. They're really great. I immediately thought of the arachnals when the generator spat out that combination.

I didn't really think about it, but I guess they should be sentient and NG.

Wis damage is never permanent; only drain is. This is damage, not drain.

Alratar
The King of the World, The Great Orator
LG Greater God
Symbol: A Mountain with an Eye at its peak
Portfolio: Rulers, Mountains, Winds, Speech, Eloquence
Clergy Alignments: LG, NG, LN
Domains: Earth, Glory, Charm, Air
Favored Weapon: Longsword

Alratar is the primogenitor of most of the deities in his pantheon. It is because of this that he is the technical ruler of his pantheon, and the patron of rulers and leadership. Not only is the pantheon his domain as ruler but also the whole planet too. He travels between the highest mountains of the various regions of the world and from this high post is constantly watching for any signs of evil, mostly from his enemies. Because of the mountains being the halfway point between earth and sky, Alratar, on his perch atop the highest mountain, also is said to control and regulate the winds. It is also through this that Alratar is considered a god of the air of the world including the breathe of all living things. And, it is said when a person uses his gift of breathe and speech to be persuasive, charming, and expressive greatly pleases him, whether this be from a king to a bard.

Alratar usually appears as a a stately man with hair as white and wispy as the clouds that he hides behind on the peaks of the tallest mountains. His face bares some wrinkles but he does not appear elderly. Alratar holds himself like a king, since he is, and he should always be treated as such.

His duties are to watch over his pantheon and his world, protect the mountains on which he uses as his thrones, and to regulate the winds and air.

I just came up with this after a little bit. If there is anything that needs to be changed I will gladly do so, I will admit it needs more fluff.

Alright, I'm relatively new to homebrewing, but this is too kicky not to give it a shot, though.

Hehe, one of the random names I got back was Xocor. Sounds like some new perscription drug.

Undemdareny
The Great Toymaker
Greater Deity, Chaotic Neutral
Symbol: Varies, usually a child's toy common to the local populace
Portfolio: Toys, children, play, mischief, jokes
Clergy Alignments: Any Chaotic
Domains: Chaos, Community, Craft, Moon, Fey
Favored Weapon: Light hammer

Undemdareny was originally a deity of fey creatures, though worship of him is beginning to spread into humanoid communities. His form varies, though he usually takes the form of some kind of humanoid with gossamer wings dressed in blue. Though he is usually regarded as male, it's not uncommon for him to take feminine form whenever it's convenient or fun.

While most fey prefer to keep humanoids at arm's length (if not farther), Undemdareny encourages them to learn to live and work alongside them. His followers believe humanoids and fey have much to offer each other. Undemdareny and his followers have a special love for humanoid children. Unlike the more sober adults, these fey find kindred spirits in the unfettered imagination and free spirits of children. Undemdaranites often help children in getting into (and out of) all manner of mischief, usually benign. Frequently, they build marvelous toys, games, joke paraphenalia, and other things to help delight and amuse children. True to their fey nature, they prefer to work in secret, often creating and delivering gifts by moonlight, and wait and watch the child's delight when he finds their handiwork in the morning.

Needless to say, authority figures of all kinds, from monarchs to courthouses to parents (especially parents) have less than cordial relations with Undemdarey and his followers. To Undemdareny, however, such struggles are games, and very fun ones, at that.

Scholars often debate Undemdareny's curiously high stature among the Gods, given that his worshippers are relatively few. His secret is that he draws power from each child's delight, the way most deities do from worshippers.

Undemdareny counts Yiggur and Zathka among his best friends. The likes of Heironeous, Hextor, Bane (FR), and Tyr (FR) are too serious for his tastes, and, when Undemdareny can manage it, are the butt of cosmic practical jokes.

I would appreciate suggestions about avatars, heralds, and the like, as I know next to nothing about those things.
