| Nogitsune_Teumessia02-01-08, 12:14 AM | These are deities for a setting I'm working on based on Greek mythology. It isn't a one-to-one correspondence and a few of the more notable deities are missing (while others are quite different than their mythological counterparts). I'd appreciate any thoughts on them beyond these obvious things, however. Name(s):Aeon, Father Time Power: Uber Deity [40] Alignment: Unaligned Symbol(s): Hourglass Weapon(s): Scythe, sickle Avatar(s): Father Time - wizened old male holding or wearing an hour glass. He always appears as the same species as the viewer. If the species has hands, Aeon will have a scythe or sickle in one hand. If not, there is a sickle-like mark on his forehead. Domain(s): Time Portfolio: Time Other: He is god of time as well as time itself; as a result Aeon is usually only concerned with the passage of time and does not usually take part in the affairs of deities or mortals beyond his role as keeper of time. Name(s): Astrea, Mother Nature Power: Uber Deity [40] Alignment: Unaligned Symbol(s): A miniature loom Weapon(s): Net Avatar(s): Mother Nature - a wizened old female holding or wearing a miniature loom. She always appears as the same species as the viewer. Domain(s): Creation Portfolio: Reality Other: Astrea is goddess of space as well as all reality itself. She is usually only concerned about maintaining existence and does not usually take part in the affairs of deities or mortals beyond her role of ensuring reality continues. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Name(s): Chaos Power: Greater Deity [20] Alignment: Chaotic Neutral Symbol(s): Penrose Triangle Weapon(s): None Avatar(s): Chaos appears as a whirl of ever changing colors and elements. Chaos is the eldest child of Astrea and Aeon. Name(s): Nyx Power: Greater Deity [20] Alignment: True Neutral Symbol(s): A black circle Weapon(s): None Avatar(s): Nyx always appears as the same species as the viewer but has black skin and hair. Her exact features are almost impossible to distinguish due to her black on black appearance but she always has a set of black wings (the exact type varies at her whim). When angered her form grows larger and larger, seeming to spread out in all directions and is accompanied by a feeling of impending doom. She is accompanied by her companion Maron. No, this is not that close to the usual creation story. Of course, the stories of the deities varied from place to place. |

Of course, the stories of the deities varied from place to place. No problem with the sblock. I didn't think it was the 'real' creation story, I didn't see Zeus and I think all of these deities are supposed to be 'alive' at the same time. All in all I think its a really cool system, I wish I had the courage to try and incorporate a family pantheon like this. A couple of comments however, I think that Hephaestus and Aphrodite are the parents of too much, in a sense. It might just be me. Another thing, are humans by far the main race. I know I saw entries like; creator of male centaurs, but are these other creatures secondary like in real world mythology? |
| michel andre02-02-08, 08:12 PM | Much better. Were you influenced by anime/manga? |

I know I saw entries like; creator of male centaurs, but are these other creatures secondary like in real world mythology? Thanks. I'm working on the background for the setting which will read like real-life myths. Zeus in real mythology had a great many different children (generally by different women). It seemed logical to have them have those children. I'm really not sure how else to have them appear, I wanted to avoid the huge amount of deities real Greek mythology has. I didn't intend humans to be the main race in the setting. I plan to have the Cyclopses and Minotaurs have major parts in the world. Some of the others, like the Sphinxes, I haven't quite figured out how yet though. |
| Nogitsune_Teumessia02-03-08, 12:19 AM | Much better. Were you influenced by anime/manga? Thank you. While I enjoy anime and manga I haven't seen anything recently that influenced this. I just love mythology and themed settings. |
| Pandaemoni02-03-08, 02:04 AM | Poor Hecate, screwed again. :D Seriously, this is great work. It makes me want to run a Greek-based campaign |
| Nogitsune_Teumessia02-03-08, 08:28 AM | Poor Hecate, screwed again. :D Seriously, this is great work. It makes me want to run a Greek-based campaign Alas poor Hecate, we knew her well. ;) I wish I could have included her and some of the others but it would have thrown things off. Thanks! Greek mythology is cool. It has a great many monsters and races already made for it. You'd have to be careful with the deities, though. Even though there are 12 Olympians and 12 Titans, there are many, many, MANY other minor deities out there (not to mention several different versions of how the universe came to be). Playing with the myths, though, can be lots of fun. It's actually justified too, since there was no one text and myths changed from one region to another. |
| Caffeine_Genasi02-06-08, 11:32 AM | OK, I am going to try not to freak out. (Classics Major, that is I went to college and majored in Greek and Roman myths.) You said it wasn't the same, I appreciate that. You say you wanted to not have the same huge number as Greek myth had, but you have 38 deities here! I think you should try to focus on a few specifically. You might want to change the names. You have a very original story, even for one inspired by something extant. Why use the names from Greece if you are going to change the character completely? I am specifically thinking of Chronos when I say this. The character you have named Aeon IS Chronos in real myth. The word CHRONOLOGY come from Chronos, Father Time. The more druidic figure you have is more reminiscent of Dionysos. I am not saying rename him Dionysos, just maybe have something YOU created rather than Chronos. Especially if you are creating a different story around them all you might want to change the names to something your players won't recognize. Of course, they should not use OOC knowledge of the Greek deities, but it is a hard thing to overcome. Some of the GODS you have are named for monsters who never achieved divinity. That could be one reason you feel like Greek myth had a great number. Really there aren't too many major gods, most are supporting cast. And to other posters, Hecate may have gotten screwed, but Hermes...oh poor Hermes! He was much cooler in the original Greek! Anyone who steals another gods cattle on the day he is born and then denies it right to his face, how can you beat that? And Aphrodite is his mother instead of one of his lovers...well, on second thought, this IS based on Greek myth...nevermind about that part, lol |
| Nogitsune_Teumessia02-06-08, 04:37 PM | OK, I am going to try not to freak out. (Classics Major, that is I went to college and majored in Greek and Roman myths.) You said it wasn't the same, I appreciate that. My apologies again. I knew the minute I tried this SOMEONE who knew the real myths was going to see it and shudder. You say you wanted to not have the same huge number as Greek myth had, but you have 38 deities here! I think you should try to focus on a few specifically. I understand your point, though I'm never sure where to limit things unless I stopped at 26 (the 12 Olympians, 12 Titans, Gaia and Uranus). I will definitely consider it. My main problem is that I wanted to use the various beings from Greek myths so it seemed logical to use the deities as well. I was under the impression that Aeon was an alternate name for Chronus but that Chronos and Cronus are two separate deities, the former being associated with celestial time while the latter was more associated with human time along with such things as grains and harvests. I could be mistaken, however. I do understand I have changed some of their natures quite drastically, especially Aphrodite's. Especially if you are creating a different story around them all you might want to change the names to something your players won't recognize. Of course, they should not use OOC knowledge of the Greek deities, but it is a hard thing to overcome. *nods* I can go back and change them, though I'd probably have to change the name of the thread somewhat. I might try to do actual Greek deities for folks here. Some of the GODS you have are named for monsters who never achieved divinity. That could be one reason you feel like Greek myth had a great number. Really there aren't too many major gods, most are supporting cast. I think only Typhon and Echidna actually fall into this category. I was more thinking of the various Horae, the Muses, the 3000 Oceanids, etc. And to other posters, Hecate may have gotten screwed, but Hermes...oh poor Hermes! He was much cooler in the original Greek! Anyone who steals another gods cattle on the day he is born and then denies it right to his face, how can you beat that? And Aphrodite is his mother instead of one of his lovers...well, on second thought, this IS based on Greek myth...nevermind about that part, lol Hehe. I will definitely have to do actual Greek deities, who are much cooler than the ones I have here. Thank you for your comments. |

I like your creativity and do not mind that your pantheon is only very loosely based on actual myths. I do not think you need to change any names unless that’s what you really want. Aeon is another name for Chronos (and neither is Kronos, by the way.) Please make your future posts smaller with multiple postings on the same thread; it is much easier to read and digest. You will probably get more feedback that way. I look forward to your future posts on Greek Gods. |

I have some creation myths that I may add. Should this post fall off the end before I can add them I'll be sure to repost it in a more easily digestible form. |

| Nogitsune_Teumessia02-10-08, 01:00 PM | You left out Zeus and made Hephaestus the unofficial ruler. I'm curious to know why. When I was creating the deities I tried to take into account their original stories as well as the new way they were born. Hephaestus is the smith of the gods, a job involving creating things from earth as well as using fire - it made sense to have him be the child of Gaia and Prometheus (who I made deity of fire). It seemed logical that his mate should represent the combination of air and water. I gave that to Aphrodite because she is the wife of Hephaestus in myth (even if she is not as faithful as I made her in this variant). In theory I could have made Zeus and Poseidon her brothers (each taking on only one aspect of the water/air combo) but I decided against that. Zeus, to me, was never a very good leader of the gods - he just happened to have powerful weapons. For all purposes Typhon here is pretty similar to Zeus in nature (including having multiple liaisons with mortals) while Echidna is the equivalent to Hera in temperament (I never understood how someone who was supposed to be a protector of women could be so spiteful of Zeus's lovers, especially since most of them were raped). Since Typhon is a monster in normal mythology, it would account for why he is not in charge, as opposed to if I had simply called him Zeus and left people to wonder why the king of the gods wasn't king (or was Lawful Evil). Does this make sense? |

| Nogitsune_Teumessia02-11-08, 09:13 PM | So you're saying Zeus is typhon and Hera is Echidna or are they just replacing them altogether. They are replacing them in all ways except Typhon is a lusty deity that likes to mate with beautiful mortal females and Echidna is his reluctant (and jealous) wife who punishes those same mortal women for being raped by her unfaithful husband. |
