Dang, how is a vague way of putting it. So far, I've seen:

1. Kill off a god
2. Gain a god's favor
3. Absorb a peice of a plane
4. Get damn lucky
5. Talk to some odd "Serpent" or "KEy"
6. Absorb an entire school of magic
7. Gain a large following
8. Create a whole new race of creatures
9. Find and cast the "Ultimate Spell" (so epic, it's dern near impossible without being an athasian dragon)
10. Beat a god with a part of their own portfolio (ie. Outplay a god of magic, trick a god of deciet, etc.)
11. Absorb an artifact
12. Pray hard enough to the overgod that no one but the Wizards Three knows about.
13. Go to Faerun and find some way to meet Ed Greenwood.

Okay, those last two were jokes...

But the rest all make sense, right?

The process or mechanism of mortal or undead apotheosis (American Heritage dictionary: Apotheosis: exaltation to divine rank or station) would be entirely campaign specific. In some campaigns divine ascension would not be possible. In others it would be. The question of weather apotheosis is or not possible would depend on the parameters the DM has set for the world he/she created, or modified from a published game world.
As for the “how” of apotheosis, that would also be campaign specific.
For example: I seem to remember in the Forgotten realms, during the Time of Troubles, Cyric and Mystra both mortals, were raised to godhood by the overpower AO as a reward for their part in the recovery of the “tablets of Fate”.
Another example I can think of comes from Grey Hawk. Zagig Yragerne, an extremely powerful mage, constructed nine “god traps” to trap nine demi-powers. I think one for each alignment. He trapped Iuz, Cambion son of the witch Iggwilv and Grazz’t the Demon prince. He also traped Zoeken, a warrior monk of the Baklunesh empire. This warrior monk along with a score or more comrades held a key pass and destroyed the Seul army. Zoeken alone survived. He passed many legendary tests and entered the Baklunesh heavens and he was immortalized as a demigod. The “Fists of Zoeken” of the Expanded Psionics Handbook, are probably his followers. Once the Demi powers were held in the god traps, Zagig Yrgerne ripped some of their essence away, used it for his own to ascended into the court of Baccob.
I appoligize if I did not get all of the details entirely correct.

From my own gaming experience, about ten years ago, at the invitation of a friend of mine, I joined a high level forgotten realms campaign getting ready for the campaign climax. My character was an elf 9th lvl fighter/ 11 lvl mage with the blade singer kit, 2nd edition. While our party was adventuring on some sort of parallel world my character retrieved some sort Imaskari artifact, a rod or scepter of some sort. Unbeknownst to my character the scepter had the charming power of booting a god from the celestial realms. This staff would eject a random god once per week. Well the first god to go was Mask. I did not trust the party wizard, and when the party cleric demanded the scepter, the DM explained that my character had come under the influence of this artifact, and I was especially suspicious of clerics. Having just met the party, and only going through one adventure with them, I did not quite trust them, certainly not with an item of this power. My character bolted. First he teleported to the Anaroch. Then he cast non-detection upon himself. Then he teleported next to the city of Tantras. I reasoned that since this was a magic dead area my character would be reasonably safe from the party’s attempts to scry on him. With Mask booted from the planes, my character deposited the Scepter in a Bank there. I thought that the only way into the bank would be a mundane one, and with Mask booted, I thought that thieves would be having problems. The rest of the party traced me to the Anaroch, but could go no further so they teleported to Waterdeep. My character, the next day left Tantra’s magic dead area, and immediately cast non-detection upon himself. He then teleported to Water deep, and consulted with Black staff whom he had worked with in the past. He found out that the only way to destroy the scepter was to kill a god with it.
Then the rest of the party caught up to my character. Apparently one of the party members was a hidden lord of Waterdeep, and my character ran afoul of his intelligence network, so they were able to find my character through mundane means. When confronted my character told them why he ran, and that Black-staff told him how to destroy the staff. He then teleported them to Tantrass. The party arrived in time to see a bunch of Zhentarim fighters leaving the bank with the scepter. Once out of the city, they flew away on their nightmares. Our party was able to force the fighters down onto an island in the Inner Sea. A pitched battle ensued. Under the cover of an improved invisibility spell, my character was able to snatch the Scepter. The Zhents called their Calvary. Fzoul and Manshoon teleported in. We were in serious trouble. Then the guy playing the wizard suggested that Maybe Ilmater would be willing to sacrifice himself, since he was into that sort of thing. According to the DM. Ilmater heard the suggestion and materialized. While the rest of the party was doing their best to hold off a Zhent high-level fighter, Fzoul and Manshoon, My character had to beat this crippled god to death with a stick.
I felt very uncomfortable doing this. After the deed was done, Imaskari scepter broke. The DM informed me that someone would have to take the gods place and power in the heavens
I saw the guy playing the wizard’s eyes light up. I decided that my character would accept the burden. He wasn’t going to pass this responsibility off on anyone else, besides he didn’t like the wizard. One of the other players running a fighter, said in surprise, “You can cast stone skin on others?” after my character did so “ Our wizard said that wasn’t possible. You selfish bastard! This guy stays, what do we need you for?”
Anyways that was now one of my characters became a god and replaced Illmater in the celestial realms.

I don’t know if this answers your quesiton but I hope it helps

how can i trick people to worship me

You conquer people and establish a god-king dyntasy, create a cult of you, or find a tribe of primitives and wow them with your advanced thinking. There's probably other ways, but these are the most common.

There was a mad wizard once who invented immortality. He also created the Chuuls and the first generation of the aberrant creatures is immortal. That is an interesting first step, but it is a farcry from actual godhood. Short of recieving ultimate enlightenmnt, the essence of an existing deity or god-born artifact, or the worship of countless mooks, I don't know how you would do that. I would, naturally exclude artifacts not created by a deity.

I always liked the second edition rules for it:
To go from Hero to Demigod...Class level 15+, Charisma 18+, Major Attribute 19+, and must have at least 200 worshipers.

What is easier than that?

Kakal the Undying
(Half-Elf/Half Troll CN Bard) All demigod.

7' Tall, 300lb, Skin Colour: Dusty Ash, Eyes: Green

"Let me get this straight? You are a God because those two hundred Intelligent Mushrooms worship you for your Bardic Talent." Kail the Sworder stared at the huge, leathery Elf-Troll.
"Yup!" Kakal the Undying nodded and Kail walked off...

No, that's perfectly reasonable. What's sad is the rules for divine ascension in 2e. A bit too easy if you ask me.

Legal ways to become a god, besides DM-fiat:

1) Research and cast this:

KARSUS'S AVATAR
Evocation/Enchantment/Transmutation
Level: Arcanist 12
Field: Mentalism
Components: V, S, M
Casting Time: 6 hours
Range: Unlimited
Target: One god
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: ???
Spell Resistance: ???

Karsus spent well over a decade researching this spell. It was so complex that he had to use a stone-filled gizzard of a gold dragon and part of the epidermis of the pituitary gland of the tarrasque just to enchant one of the material components of the spell.
This spell allows the caster to become a god of his choosing, replacing a current god with himself the moment the spell is completed. Whether the god receives a saving throw, is aware of its casting, and other factors are unknown.
The notes regarding the spell’s essence were nowhere to be found. It’s believed Mystra, the reincarnated form of Mystryl, snatched the spell information from the ruins of Karsus’s enclave and sent it on an eternal journey to the ends of the universe.

2) Convince a current god to invest a portion of its divine essence into you, making you into a proxy with divine rank 1.

3) Become a dragon, and take 14 levels of the Dragon Ascendant prestige class from the Draconomicon, granting you divine rank 0 (technically a quasi-deity, but hey it's something!)

In one of the many campaign ideas I've got kicking around in my skull, the PCs have just survived their world's apocalypse, and learn that they can become gods themselves to remake the world to their desires. Unfortunately, to obtain divinity they have to fight their way through the other survivors until they're the only ones left standing (kind of like Highlander without the whole "There can be only one" thing).

Wait, the last things in the entire world? That's pretty heavy.

Cheesy has the RAW methods down, but I think the OP was... vague enough... that almost any answer is valid... :(

Kakal the Undying: A History

A Cult took an Elf Princess as a sacrifice and shackled her to an Altar. She was then bred with a Troll and the foul Offspring was Born (they cut the child out of the Mother).

They had plans to raise their own God as a lord of Chaos and Evil, but fate intervened. The Deformed child was raised by a half elf/Human Bard who himself was considered a vile Bastard outcast. So he Raised the child in the Ways of Music along with a bunch of other Musical wanabees living in their Bardic Monastic order.

Things progressed and the Kakal the Bard went out in the world and was worshiped for his musical Talent by people in concert halls...His voice was his prized instrument. He could do things that could Shatter crystal. Unfortunately all those worshipers caused him to become A Demigod. and when Elves he had known for centuries dropped dead of old age while he was young and always full of talent and song..He had become Kakal the Undying.

I didn't say the PCs were the cause of this apocalypse. Most of their respective races are already dead. They're just survivors battling for a prize.

Triyu,
I’m sorry that last bit was a bit of a non-sequester. I was tired. Let me see if I remember the situation.

Lets see the player running the fighter in the party was going to engage one of the zhent fighters, and my character cast stone skin on his character. He then said in surprise “ you can cast stone skin on others?” “Our wizard said that wasn’t possible.” The player running the fighter turned to the player running the wizard and said “ you selfish bastard! This new guy stays. What do we need you for?”

I was tired it was late when I wrote the previous post. I hope this clarifies the situation.

Non sequitur, not non-sequester.
locustechpriest

10-16-07, 02:10 PM
Indeed. However, "sequester" means to hide away or, taken loosely, hoard magic and lie to others so that your character outshines everyone else's. Given that interpretation, the error seems justifiable! ;)
