What are the origins of Iggwilv? Where did she come from and where can I find more (older edition) information about her?

From Dragon #336:

Iggwilv, the Mother of Witches and the Queen of Night, hails from the world of Greyhawk. With powers on par with those of a quasi-deity, main believe in her divine nature and worship Iggwilv as the dark matron of sorcery. Some obscure northern lore even hints that she is the issue of the witch Baba-Yaga herself. As mother of the demigod Iuz, she is the most infamous distaff member of a long roll of villains who relentlessly threaten Oerth and many other worlds.

Iggwilv's first confirmed appearance was nearly three centuries ago in the western borderlands known as al-Ket, although she was known then as Hura. The witch ensconced herself in a tower on the outskirts of the City of Lopolla for many years, conducting varied vile investigations. Her plunder of the Vault of Daoud proved one outrage too many, though, and the people of these devout lands saw her hounded from her stronghold into exile.

Cast out, she eventually settled in the blossoming City of Greyhawk about two centuries ago, where she came to the attention of its mysterious lord and benefactor Zagig Yragerne, who scandalously took the sorceress as an apprentice. Training at the feet of the master, Iggwilv learned of the denizens of the outer planes, their strengths, and their weaknesses. Together, the Mad Wizard and feared witch audaciously succeeded in summoning and binding the demon lord Fraz-Urb'Luu. Craving the power to accomplish this feat alone, Iggwilv absconded with many of Zagig's creations, including his prized Tome of Zyx. Refining its arcane formulae, she renamed the tome with the infamous title, Demonomicon.

Iggwilv returned with her plunder to the Y.itil Mountains in the west, where she claimed a long lost dungeon created by the ancient wizard Tsojcanth. Within these caverns she set about her labors and after many fits and starts succeeded beyond her wildest dreams, imprisoning the powerful demon lord...

(cue her love-hate thing with Graz'zt, birth of Iuz, etc., etc.)

Iggwilv's Nethertome article from Dragon #225 (http://www.dracheninsel.de/dracheninsel/add/greyhawk/grimoires.htm) covers Iggwilv's history from her conquest of Perrenland (CY460) up to the events of The Isle of The Ape and the Greyhawk Wars.

The adventure Return of the Eight has info on her recent return to the Flanaess (p.9,10 and 55,56; Rot8 even includes a complete listing of sources on Iggwilv and Tuerny):

Iggwilv was recently freed from her imprisonment by Grazzt and once more joins forces with her son Iuz, making her a major source of trouble for the Flanaess.

Rot8 also features the return of Tuerny the Merciless in Nalfeshnee form no less. A great conjurer from the distant past from Aerdi he also once captured Grazzt in the Iron Flask of his creation and was later captured in it by Grazzt in return. He was transformed into a dretch and taken to the Abyss as a slave, then worked his way up until Nalfeshnee status (with 17th level wizard ability) by commanding forces in the Blood War. He has been free in the Abyss for centuries and freed Iggwilv to spite Grazzt.

Another thread about Iggwilv here on WotC (http://boards1.wizards.com/wotc_archive/index.php/t-446058) has a great post by Rip that sums up her history since CY460 nicely and also features some awesome fiction by sciborg2 and rip.

(The History of Iggwilv by Terry Harrison, from the Wolrd of Greyhawk texts site which has much material (though old), mostly saved/compiled from greytalk. It is non-canon and has Iggwilv born in Perrenland, but still it is great material. Maybe of use for conflicting in-game lore about her origins.)

Iggwilv is also going to be showing up in Dungeon magazine's current adventure path in one of the remaining issues, and apparently on the cover as well (but she won't be as well dressed as some of the 'loths that show up in one of the other remaining slots of the AP however. Just saying. ;))

Loths and famous NPCs? My, they're going all out with this last couple of issues. And I can only imagine what you mean by 'well-dressed'.

*shrugs*

We do know from public posts that there are some 'loths involved at some stage of the current AP (presumably in getting information about demogorgon, or getting allies against him). Anything beyond that, I couldn't say (or won't, least not till the issue is out).

Man I'm going to miss that magazine. Still hoping I get something printed in there in the last three issues that I submitted. Not a clue at this point.

Will Iggwilv be a background story part of Horrors, or an active role, or is this one of those "Just you wait you impatient person!" type questions?

My question has nothing to do with Horrors. I'm working on something of my own.

Thanael, I think my DM ran me through Rot8, which he updated to 3rd edition. Is Tenser a dretch/mane in that story? We barely freed him and escaped with our lives. Thanks for all the links though...that'll be some reading....

Weenie, thanks for the excerpt. I'll have to see if I have that one, otherwise its off to Ebay...

Shemeska...that's very interesting. Something to look forward to. Along those lines, is Paizo going to release Age of Worms or Savage Tides as a collected volume, like they did with Shackled City?

That's the one Kain. BTW, I got the links from an old DF thread (1st or 2nd board) that i saved, where you also mentioned your adventure with Tenser ;-)

One more link: Iggwilv in Gord the Rogue (http://home.comcast.net/~chris.s/iuz.html#iggwilv)

PS: And I could have sworn Kain would answer those questions with an enigmatic "Yes."

And always forget the name of the adventure.

Not everything revolves around DF official. :D
