This thread is one that I originally posted in the DM section of the message boards, but I moved it here because it concerns more about the planes and their inhabitants than anything else. So, in my campaign, which is set in Forgotten Realms, I plan to have an organism invade the material plane that affects all magic users and psions (there are two types, one for magic and one for psionics). At first, the organism is undetectable as it spreads to its targets through the Weave and telepathic links. Then as it begins to take hold, it starts to affect their ability to cast. It makes the magic user/psion subject to the wild magic plane attribute table (Manual of the Planes). After a period of a few months, the caster/psion starts to lose his or her sanity when they use their powers (Unearthed Arcana Sanity). My idea is this organism is the scouts of an invasion from the Far Realm. One of my questions is, does anyone have any information on the Far Realm, I don't know much about it, and maybe you can direct me to a place that has information on it? Also, does anyone have any suggestions on how I should approach this? I like the idea, but it puts casters and psions at a major disadvantage to everyone else in the party. It makes them a liability actually. Also for the stats of the organism, I might make it a swarm, but more than likely it will have to be microscopic with the ability to combine into a bigger creature. It was suggested that I should make it some kind of disease on the casters, and I'll think that one over. I envision them to be like the Borg from Star Trek to make a good comparison. Perhaps I could make a template out of them.

Heres a thread (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=448354) that should answer all questions you have, plus it has tons of creatures for the Far Realms.

I like your idea, perhaps mix your ideas, a disease that causes a borg-like template for instance. To overcome the mage/psions becoming liabilities, maybe you could come up with a new spell to reverse the disease/template. Then have a new disease/infectious-through scratch-template come later that affects melee combatants more often than casters.

For the swarm idea for your organism, maybe have it be a swarmshifter, I forget which book, and have it be able to shift from a single creature to a swarm of smaller creatures.

Hope that helped.

The one in Libris Mortis you mean?

I use it whenever I can make an excuse. :dancin:

Thats the one, page 123 of Libris Mortis. You may have to change parts of it, namely the restriction for only undead, but it may be able to accomplish what you need.

I don't have LM on me right now, but I'll take a look at it later. It sounds good.

Looks cool. I would have to change the template around some, but that's ok. I think it may be easier if I just call it a disease though, and they have to find a cure (finally a use for remove disease). Of course this is too wide spread for that to work, it it just comes back. They will have to continue curing themselves until they find a true way to stop the organisms. Perhaps there's like a terminal host or something that they need to survive. If the PCs took that out, then they would stop the infestation. Depending on how much time it took them, though, they may or may not have to face the warriors of the Far Realms (I always loved mind flayers :coolcthul ). Thanks by the way for the link to the Far realms thread. What about monsters currently native to the Far Realms though? Why would they suddenly choose to attack? I'll have to think about that one.

The way I imagine the far realms to be (And basically going against what is written so..) is that it is a parallel Universe that is entering the final stages of Entropic heat death -The entire Reality is dying, and whatever is left is incredibly powerful and old (Ten Trillion years or so..), and are obviously a bit against the idea of dying the slow death of Entropy and so, are overlaying themselves onto our own fresh, supple Universe.

I always imagined the Far Relams as a place of uncontrolled evil. Like the Abyss, Baator, and the Gray combined (not in amount of evil, but combining the chaos, law, and neutrality). Calculating killers, chaotic savages, mad scientists and experimenting wizards, etc. A reality where a mortal would go mad from the pure uninhibited evil of the entire plane. But that's just me.

I like that idea. Perhaps that could be a reason for them to come to the Material plane, their reality is falling apart so they need a new home.

Only trouble is I can't think of what a being at the ends of existence would look like without resorting to the tried and boring method of "Tentacles and amorphous"
I might just out right steal the Photino birds and the Xeelee from Stephen Baxter's books.
They are sufficiently weird without having tentacles.

In Seven Soldiers humanity has evolved into the Fey, who are degenerate post humans who travel back in time to rob from the greatest cultures of their own history.
